bubs_42 Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Ok, I go to this local shop all the time because they carry good stuff. Tones of tube amps and a but load of tubes but they never have El34's in stock... I have a power tube in my 50 watter going out and need a set. So I go in there and for the fourth time in a row they don't have any. So I'm going online this time. So who's got the goods. I like Rubys and thats probley what I'll stick with.
Uncle Thor's Hamer Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Lots of places. Musiciansfriend.com http://thetubestore.com/ http://tubedepot.com/ http://www.tubesandmore.com/ http://www.vacuumtube.com/
hamerhead Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 I've bought from Doug's Tubes without issue. Prices seemed decent.
bubs_42 Posted April 10, 2009 Author Posted April 10, 2009 Thanks just looking to see if anyone had used a certain site..
Thundernotes Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Ruby tubes are inconsistent. We use JJs. Amen to that. JJ and Winged C (which are the real Svetlana's - not the current brand) are my favorites for sound and reliability.
bubs_42 Posted April 11, 2009 Author Posted April 11, 2009 Thanks for the suggestion on the JJ's. I'll give them a try next time.
Scottcrud Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 I use www.dougstubes.com or the tubedepot. Doug is especially helpful.

morningstar Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 I have been buying tubes from Jason Pang at New Quest Sound for about ten years. Always good stuff. This is his evilBay store:http://electronics.shop.ebay.com/items/Vin...911Q2ec0Q2em282Those reissue TungSol 12AX7's struck me as every bit as good as my favorite NOS.He also have lots of other tubes including Winged C real Svetlanas and fancy schmancy gold pins and other audiophool stuff.morningstar
Brownsound Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 I get my tubes here. http://www.eurotubes.com/. Great prices and product. Pleasure to do business with.
Jeroen Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 JJ tubes are the ones!!!I buy them online in Los Angeles from NewQuestSound.Jeroen
KH Guitar Freak Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 Thing is though, I would definitely say IMHO that what valves you like really depends on what amp you are using, and what are your tonally preference. I find that some valves that sound awesome in one amp, sounds rather bleh in others...
bubs_42 Posted April 11, 2009 Author Posted April 11, 2009 I've got to say that the only amp that I have never had any trouble with is my Boogie.. And I sold it! My little trooper that I'm using untill I get another boogie just went down. I swapped my Power Tubes because that was the original issue. I was playing my Monaco and heard, (What sounded like a short). SO I paused, then started again. No problems, so my dumb ass figured it did it when I Chugged an A Bar on the Low E and BAMM!. Shorted again. Loss sound but the amp stayed on. Got three amps but I'm not playing the other too because I sold them or selling them. Have to check it out today.
KH Guitar Freak Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 That's what you get for trolling the Boogie boards...

I find that some valves that sound awesome in one amp, sounds rather bleh in others...Thats it. A good tube source will have info on your particular amp and what seems to work if they have any experience at all. Its interesting that all of my auto-biasing amps are less picky about tubes than my Marshalls. After learning how to bias I have been able to wring amazing tone from Marshall amps that are not particularly louded for their tone such as the DSLs...and I love mine.

That was the thing about the Dr. Z amp. When I got it, I didn't have tube tester or a scope or a bias tool. So when an issue arrived I was at the mercy of a tech. Most are swamped with work and you can't get anything back quick. I am going to one amp and didn't want to be without an amp for weeks at a time if something happens to it.
kurtsstuff Posted April 12, 2009 Posted April 12, 2009 Dougs tubes...I go through alot of tubes and had one show up crackedEmailed Doug and no questions asked..had a replacement in 2 daysDidn't even want the cracked one back as proof!!..The best in my book
Doink Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 I buy JJ's from Eurotubes. His shop is local to me, so I can just take my amp down there. He is very informative and has a wide selection of JJ's.

Here's an integrated set of JJ's in my 2 channel dual recto, JJ KT88's on the outside and KT66's inside, JJGZ34's for the rectifier and high gain JJ ECC83's for pre's I recently installed, HUGE difference in tone:
gregc Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 I buy tubes form Doug's Tubes now, but he is local to me and I can call & pick em up or have them overnight.
Bennyboy-UK Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 Hi there,Try these guys from the UK, they are well respected. Not sure if they would ship internationally - or if you would want to do that with fragile items like Valves anyway - worth a look anyway!http://www.watfordvalves.com/home.aspBest wishes,Ben.
