Jim Browne Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 I LOVE SUSTAIN BLOCK SPECIALS and this one looks great. Enjoy it and don't think about the f...money. I'm like you likely to worry after a purchase but you did the right thing ;-) Thanks, cornjulio. This is one of the few places where I'd get such advice!I've already swallowed my "pride" (ha, good one!) and gotten a loan. Now it's off to the bank to avert further disaster.
specialk Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Way to go, Jim! Congrats, and it sounds like you have your priorities straight. That guitar will last a lot longer than a temporary cash flow problem.
GusS Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 i can't believe so many people find this finish ugly. I find it to be one of the best looking specials I've ever seen! Serials teal burst standard is also my favorite standard ever. Jim, maybe holla at me if you'll fall out of love with it.
stonge Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Glad to hear that one ended up in an HFC home. Give it some playtime and I think you'll come to enjoy that one (play it in a dark room with the lights out if you have to lol - still, I didn't mind the color). It is pretty clean and in good condition considering the age - it is a really good-sounding guitar. Who here hasn't occasionally committed to more than the budget allows lol? Mrs stonge has become used to my groveling for fundage ("umm, there was this guitar on ebay, ya see, and I, uh, kinda put in a small bid that, uh, ended up winning...etc"). Once the loan is repaid, you'll still have a cool guitar to enjoy.Email me at stongemonataoldotcom with your mailing address and I will mail you a replacement knob and a set of modern Dunlop-compatible strap buttons for the body (pretty sure the original strap buttons are back on that one). Thanks for buying that one - enjoy it!
burningyen Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Way to go, Jim! Congrats, and it sounds like you have your priorities straight. That guitar will last a lot longer than a temporary cash flow problem.I 100% disagree, but apparently I'm in the minority these days.
Jim Browne Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Thanks for all the encouraging words and thanks to stonge, especially, for the very kind offer. My priorities are wildly out of order, but I'm single, otherwise thrifty, and, until now, have managed to not horrify any family members with my financial misadventures (they may've notice me sweating a bit more than normal, though)! Maybe I've learned my lesson, but... probably not. I will behave for a while, though! If I ever decide to sell it (and I've only ever sold one of my guitars-my first one, a Lori Strat copy, that I got in '79), you'll hear about it here. I could only see doing so because of the redundancy, but I'm also very capable of being impractical, so-we'll see. I appreciate everyone's input; you're a fine bunch of enablers!
Aceldama Posted October 20, 2009 Author Posted October 20, 2009 Arghhhh! Don't tell me it's the friggin shit! I'm going to regret not picking this one up...
Jim Browne Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 They made lots, after all, and any one that I've played has been great. In this economy, I'm sure that there will be many better deals on Sustainblock Specials.
Pieman Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 I bought a beater Special (82-83) last year. It was a blast to play but the ugly factor caused me to get rid of it and I regret it. Just play it and enjoy.
Special J Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Hey Jim, hope you're still enjoying that '81! I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss it. Congrats on another cool Special!

grahams98 Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 This has appeared on eBay for the last few weeks. The price is still too darn high, but it might end up at 500 or 600 with a BIN at this rate.Anyone have a horror story with this one? I did notice that the serial is a little faint, but I've seen worse...And now with the link!Cool guitar, enjoy your time capsule...it's not like we can call the Hamer used guitar factory and say build me one. At minimum you shouldn't loose money if you eventually decide to pass it on which is better than I can say for my 401k this year.
rugby1970 Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Congrats on the purchase. I think the color/finish is way cool.
Jim Browne Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Thanks for all the words of encouragement, everybody. If concerned family members ever try to stage an intervention, I'll point to your comments as proof that my G.A.S.-induced actions are completely rational. I have no reservations about the color, since the color is why I bought it!Jesse: I am still enjoying your old Special, in its vintage-enthusiast-approved finish. Thanks. Is that the guitar on the left in your avatar? I remember your blue mini-hum Special; that's a very cool guitar! After I purchased this Tealburst, I took a look at completed auctions for Hamer Specials on eBay.Someone recently won a nineties Special that was pretty brutalized, with a coat of black paint desecration that made it looked charred. Still, it looks like someone won it for $1.04!!! Sorry that I don't post here more frequently, my normal browser and the HFC have issues for some reason, and I'm not allowed on via Firefox. I snuck here via AOL, but I frequently get knocked off.

cmatthes Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Holy crap! Did BEAVERS get to that fingerboard?!?!?

Harkening back to the day when I could say I had a Hamer "collection". Still got the blue one though!
