Anyone know why this is still for sale...

This has appeared on eBay for the last few weeks. The price is still too darn high, but it might end up at 500 or 600 with a BIN at this rate.

Anyone have a horror story with this one? I did notice that the serial is a little faint, but I've seen worse...

And now with the link!

There are 3 things stopping me from bidding on this:]

1) I don't really think green and yellow are a good combo. If it were a cherry sunburst, I would be much more into it.

2) I'm in Iraq, and scared what shipping would be to get it out here, and don't want Iraq's desert climate to affect it.

3) I'm actually pretty pleased with the '82 Special I have that was modified to have a Kahler trem. It plays, sounds, and sustains great, so I don't really need to get a guitar painted a color I don't like very much.

actually, that was my guitar until about a week ago. I had it on consignment at the shop to pay off a 2008 Jackson RR-1 - in retrospect, I was looking for too much on it originally (the shop gets 25% on consignments) and had been out of town so the price wasn't dropping all that quickly. I was planning to just take it back and put it on the shelf, but the shop made an offer on it so they own it now. FWIW, the owner was a Hamer dealer from the early 80's and just can't figure why a guitar like this won't move (which validates his decision to drop the Hamer line). It's had a few tire-kickers and testdrives, but nobody has stepped up with a decent offer yet (the only guitar that got less interest than that Hamer was my 2004 Robin Ranger that was also on consignment).

It's an '82 with a recent Hamer HSC - other than the case it's all original parts and the neck is certainly not the thin shred-style neck that a lot of early 80's specials have (nothing like a 1" warmoth boatneck, but far from PRS wide-thin IMHO). Plays and sounds great, with no breaks or repairs just some dings and scratches. The top is typical of the veneer tops - you have to get at the correct angle to see the flame pop. The color is a matter of taste, but I like greenbursts and tealbursts lol.

oh yeah, the Jackson ain't too bad either. At least it has resale value...

I'm a fan of the Green and Bluebursts.

I did notice that the seller has dropped the price considerably - it was originally closer to $1k.

It might be worth offering him a reasonable price for a cool guitar.

Of course, you could always say, "Stonge sent me, and said you'd sell it to me for $350".

The first Hamer guitar that I ever played was a green 1983 Special... it might have been a greenburst, but I can't recall, I was only 11 at the time. It played like a dream and I was hooked ever since.

If I had $700 burnin' in my pocket, i would buy it, but I don't.

Hey guys don't get confused. Early Slammers sell in this price range.

If he'd open for shipping to Europe it would be gone in 24 hrs.

Love the dark green on the back,to bad the front wasn,t the same color

He has himself a piece of history and now all he has to do is restore it to it's original finish.

So... I bought it.

I offered the seller $650, but he wasn't having any of that.

Other than a few chips, and a little scratching on the back, I think it's in pretty amazing shape for a twenty seven year-old guitar.

I had hoped that the photos made the finish appear more underwhelming than it actually is, due to the fluorescent lighting and reflections. They did, to an extent. The treble side actually retains some strong teal color, but it is a pretty narrow band. Overall, the front is quite faded. As stonge stated, the degree of flame is totally dependent upon the angle at which you view it.

The funny thing is how faded the sides (especially the lower one, around the waist) are; the natural mahogany color comes through very strongly there, with a veil of green. I was taken by the green back in the auction photos. It reminded me of the Silver Fox-finished Epiphone Coronet that currypowder used to have for sale. I loved that particular guitar. In my cave-like apartment, the green looks a bit darker. I'll have to get it in natural light, once the sun returns.

Compared to my '81 Cherryburst Special (which I purchased here, from Special J), it's a fair bit lighter in weight. I also have a beat-to-hell repaired-headstock Prototype(w/ amazing unplugged volume). It seems like the Sustainblock bridges really enhance the resonance of these guitars; all three sound great, with sustained notes morphing into harmonics.

What's odd is that, compared to my '81, there is a noticeable disparity between the yellowing of the mounting rings, versus that of the pickup bobbins (which look newer). I asked the seller, and he said that, according to stonge, they were original. I didn't want to pull the pickups, but I did compare both guitars' control cavities. On both, the black pickup leads have an internal layer of insulation that's a kind of metallic blue (almost a peacock-teal... like the '82 is supposed to be!). Oh, and when I took it out of the case, half of the tone knob fell off! When I'm financially solvent again, I'll have to find another.

Speaking of which, when I purchased this, I was left with $16 left in my bank account for the following ten days. Brilliant, and highly irresponsible! What I hadn't counted on was a debit card purchase from a gas station, which had taken several days to process! So, I just found out that my account is overdrawn, with the associated fees tacked on, and an automatic deduction scheduled for Wednesday (sooner than I had thought, of course). I'm gonna have to grovel for a quick loan (and, in the process, admit what an F-up I am!).

So, I can't say that I'm glad that I bought this Special! In time, I will be, I'm sure. It is a great guitar, but it's the first time that I've had two identical (other than the finish) guitars. And that's a little hard to justify. I got a little carried away by the uniqueness of its finish. And since at least two of you felt that it was ugly enough to transport you back in time, I was kinda hoping that there would be a "fountain of youth" effect.

No such luck! Well, the first really good guitars that I ever played were brand new Specials, circa 1980, so I suppose that it does send me back in time, in a way.

I LOVE SUSTAIN BLOCK SPECIALS and this one looks great. Enjoy it and don't think about the f...money. I'm like you likely to worry after a purchase but you did the right thing ;-)
