harry65 Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 old drummer calls me tuesday night and says he just copped a "funk fusion gig" for thursday , me ,him and my bass player in my country gig , cool i say , we settle on sissy strut ,memphis underground , chameleon, summertime and figure we'll funk up the rest , well he has a piano player show up to the gig , this place's opening night , mayor is there cutting the ribbon , they wanna hear straight ahead jazz!!!!!!!!!!!! the piano guy was an old jazz pro and had an extra real book with him , started with blue bossa which i have played before and is pretty harmonically easy , then we get into some heavier shite and i was at my very limits tryin to keep up , really really challenging to say the least , by the third set the peeps wanted to dance and we did funk it up a little as well as some latin santana type jams , there were time during the night that i was flustered but in the end they want us there 2-3 nights a week and i feel like i grew a little musically last night and will grow even more by doing this gig weekly , moral of the story??????????? sometimes ya just gotta say what the hey.............. edited to add the 93 studio was the axe of choice with a bit o daytona in the last set...............
backinit Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Congrats Harry! It's tough to go outside your comfort zone.
geoff_hartwell Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 That's awesome. You're creating work for yourself and several other guys, a bunch of people get to have a great time and you get to stretch yourself in the process. Right On. Geoff
Brooks Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 yikes. thats harsh w/ no prep.did you hafta sight read melodies too?
Turdus Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 It's great that you were able to adapt. We played a show a year back (first time there) where the owner reminded us to do our "dinner" set first. After we stopped laughing, we hit them with the normal full on assault we did at any show. We were not invited back, but did not really care.
harry65 Posted January 15, 2011 Author Posted January 15, 2011 yikes. thats harsh w/ no prep. did you hafta sight read melodies too? thank god no!!!!!!!!! piano player handled that , was just compin and soloing , it was a much needed wake up call..............
BubbaVO Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Good work outta ya! Even in my comfort zone, I'm not comfortable. : ) Pretty cool you can stretch like that.
Hackubus Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 Man, that's quite a curveball to have thrown at ya.

Feynman Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 If anyone could pull it off with style and ease, it's you. I guess all that theory and fluency pays off now and again. Congrats. Change your pants and celebrate.
harry65 Posted January 16, 2011 Author Posted January 16, 2011 "Congrats. Change your pants and celebrate."
Brooks Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 yikes. thats harsh w/ no prep. did you hafta sight read melodies too? thank god no!!!!!!!!! piano player handled that , was just compin and soloing , it was a much needed wake up call.............. hey, comping and soloing on jazz stuff you're not prepped for is still a HUGE challenge. anyway, a gig w/ trad jazz for set or 2 then funky fusion would be a dream come true. i had a trio back in the late 90's that did that, but we worked from a rehearsed setlist. i've sat in a few times on friends jazz gigs, thankfully they didn't call any super difficult tunes and i was able to comp & solo by following a chart. harry, if this is a regular gig near west palm, lemme know where & when so my brother can come out.
gtone Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 Congrats on making it thru. As you'd say, "be cool"...
jettster Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 That would be stressfull enough in a studio environment, let alone a live one. Sounds like you guys pulled it off, good stuff!!
Jorge Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 Wow! Congratulations, Harry! I sincerely envy the ability to do that. harry, if this is a regular gig near west palm, lemme know where & when so my brother can come out. ...and if it is far from Palm... let ME know, LOL!
