Hmmm-not sure that the pickups are original.

Apart from them both being double creams any other reasons for this?

I wonder if this was one of those (supposedly) made with Gibsons PAFs in and the owner pulled them and sold them separately, it's early enough for that isn't it?

Not even close. That story has been SO overblown/exaggerated, that everybody who has a '70s or early '80s Hamer seems to think they've got rewound PAF's in there! :D

The only way they'd be '50s PAFs were if a previous owner installed them.

The upcoming Hamer book will probably address that whole story, so I'll stop at that. ;)

Not sure, but that wiring looks kind of hinky. Not sure that's original...

Serial?

What's with the lighter stripe down center of top? Thought reflection? But in at least two photos.

Wouldn't the neck pup be installed so the bobbin w/adjustable poles is at the neck side, opposite what's shown in photo?

So any guesses if these are the original pick ups then ?

I'll throw my two cents in. The bridge pickups appear to be creme in color which would be correct for the ceramic and neck pick up appears to be a replacement. The pickup ring seems to match. It is definitely a white ceramic and the pick up ring is white. I enlarged the picture and you can clearly see the difference.

As far as original goes based on what I see, I don't believe so on either. The only way to tell is to pull the pups and look at them from the back and inspect the wiring and even then there might be a surprise.

LOL Can't believe I missed that, maybe he was going for the Peter Green out of phase thing.

That stripe appears on most, if not all early four digits. The answer to why that is is in the book. ;)

At least one is 100% NOT original. Looking in the wiring cavity, only one pickup has a braided lead-the other looks to be a post 1979 plastic-leaded four conductor.

Yep - exactly what I meant by "hinky" !

Great guitar...as stated several times, seller is not doing himself any favours. I can't even make an offer/contact him. Not that I could as I have a little something on the go ;)

I am really looking forward to this book!!

Argh! I'm still going to get a couple copies (my brother is a big Hamer fan as well).

Just got a couple Dimarzio 'long legs' w/out the 'made in usa' part. Thinking that might be what would be need for this (or those too early)? And how rare are those 'long legged' dimarzios?

Posted

Dimarzios w/o the "Made In USA" would be correct. They were used well into 1976 and I know guitars into the #0060s used them.

I'm surprised to see so many picking scratches from a guy with a fused elbow.

He must have had a really strong right wrist.

Not a bad mark up on a guitar they only paid $7,040 for.

These guys are almost as greedy as the 76 Standard owner, but i guess they aren't running a charity so what the hell do I know !

I guess it's all relative.

Sure, $500K for a white LPC is outrageous, but Les Paul's Les Paul ought to be worth a lot more than... mine, for example.

The '76 Standard is just another early Hamer, IMO. It's not like it's Rick's or someone someone else famous for using Hamers.

Even then, it would have to be The Checkerboard Standard to be talking that kind of money.

Crap. I was going to list my white Les Paul for $499,999 (just to undercut him).

Les let me hold his pick-- he made them himself. It was a thin piece of plexiglass cut into the shape of a house (square with triangle on top) about 1.5" wide and 2" long. Coarse sandpaper was stuck on the sides. Les claimed his had could no longer grip the pick, so it was held in place by friction. He was good at exaggerating, too, but he was known for bouts of arthritis affecting his weekly performances. Sometimes he played more. Sometimes he talked more. It all depended on how his hands felt.

I hate to interrupt all of yer wound-up-ed-ness over this auction...

Just want to say... the word 'hinky' makes me chuckle...

Mm-kay? Back to it guys. :D
