rj2858 Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 ^^^The answer (for some of us), would be, why wouldn't you?Well, for starters, the $85K price tag, one based squarely on the fascination of an affluent generation's males with the likes of SRV, Mayer, Landreth and the other guys mentioned in this thread. For a hobbyist/collector/hero worshipper with money to burn, owning a Dumble has nothing to do with tone. A working musician will get that tone with a Menatone Howie pedal into a Fender combo set clean, and won't have to pay the price of a well-equipped Mercedes Benz to get it.Since you quoted my post, I'm going to guess that you missed the point.I was answering the question "why would you want that tone?", not, why would you want that amp?I don't know why anyone would pay that for an amp if they JUST want the tone. You can easily buy a Fuchs, Ceriatone, or no doubt others, or there is your method, using the Menatone pedal, or my preference, the Ethos Overdrive.
Len Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 Sandler is a world class DICK.I wouldn't buy anything from him.Ever.That was the only thing I remembered about him, but he was pretty non-douchey to me this time. Maybe it was a good day.The last time I was in there not too long ago, he actually acted pretty cool towards me, he went out of his was to show me what few cool guitars he had left in there ... 1st time in over 20 years he hadn't been a DickHead ...
Feynman Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 I love my "D-style" amps. They sing.I agree, but nothing is like the real thing. I run two Overdrive Specials in a stereo Wet/Dry rig, and I get compliments on my tone.
rj2858 Posted December 30, 2012 Posted December 30, 2012 ^^^^^^^^ Then at least we know they sound good with EVERY guitar imaginable.
The Shark Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 I've played the Fuchs, the Bludo, the Two Rock amps, and settled on Brown Note amps. I own an HRM and a non-HRM built by Moss Hudson at BrownNote. Having played a bunch of Dumbles at vintage guitar shows back in the late eighties (including Eric Johnson's Steel String Singer), I know what I'm looking for. The "bloom" of the note with a Dumble style amp that's tuned correctly (especially the HRM model Overdrive Special) is something to experience. Not everyone's cup of tea. For those of you not familiar with the voice of these amps, listen to Don't Take Me Alive by Steely Dan or just about anything by Robben Ford or Larry Carlton.
onguitar Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 For those of you not familiar with the voice of these amps, listen to Don't Take Me Alive by Steely Dan ...Which was played through a tweed Fender deluxe...

"Holy Grail" tone for me from a loooooong time ago, and I still love it. Edited - 'onguitar' - really, a Deluxe? When I finally found out what Carlton played, I assumed that he used a Dumble on the Steely Dan stuff.

A great player's gonna sound great. A mediocre player's gonna sound mediocre. People get so hung up on names and mojo and start hearing what they wanna hear. Remember those Folger's commercials, where they served cheap store-bought coffee in "fine restaurants?" "I have to tell you that the designer boo-teek coffee you loved was really just freeze-dried, ground dogshit!"

The Shark Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 I don't remember saying it was a Dumble on Don't Take Me Alive. It's that sound that can be reproduced at any volume by the D-amp. I know because.....

earachemyeye Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 Love the SNL skit vid. It was the 1st thing that popped into my puny brain. +100 to The Muse.

Well, except for the fingers, the brain, the touch, the....... Good reference.
The Shark Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 The Dumble mystery has been solved by myriad builders. You can get set up with one for under two grand. I think those that think there's no redeeming quality of tone in those amplifiers are entitled to their opinion. For me, I've searched for thirty five years for the rig that does everything I want it to do. I've found it. Maybe my touch and ear have developed to a point where this amp works better for me than others with a different ear and touch (not better or worse, just different). To forward the idea that one must have the chops, touch, ear and gear of Carlton to approximate his tone is ludicrous. Same thing with Robben Ford. You have to work hard at it. I remember working just as hard to approximate Gary Moore's tone and Michael Schenker's before that. Went through a lot of Marshalls and outboard gear. It's a journey. Some prefer to scoff and insult. Big deal.
django49 Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Methinks my tongue-in-cheek comment re fingers and such could be misinterpreted.I think that video clip is interesting. I can appreciate what he does with all the gear. Few will try to replicate that setup, and the cost MIGHT be $200k given some of the outrageous asking prices. Something like "lawyer guitars", I guess. I agree that is foolish, not to mention unnecessary. For a wanker like myself, any thoughts of doing a lot more than appreciating the tones and sounds I can make happen is wishful thinking. But I can enjoy doing what I can. The Ethos box I picked up last year (thanks to The Shark) gives me all the sounds I want these days (into my favorite combo amp). Whether those sounds (okay, tones) are as good as the role model is not something I spent a lot of time trying to replicate. They DO give me a lot of useful tone(s). And I know my limitations pretty well......I have no doubt that one of the ACTUAL D-clone amps would be more authentic than my lower price exploration. May even pursue that some day. I definitely would take the lower cost options before concluding there is some magic that is only available by spending insane amounts. Shoot, for those amounts, I could probably get 3 or 4 Hubers! Okay, that is not to be taken literally either!
The Shark Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 My thoughts weren't directed your way. The Ethos is very, very good. The Ethos amp I'm sporting now is great too. It's not as good as the BrownNote amp rig, but it is really convenient. Glad you're enjoying the pedal. It does a pretty mean impression of the amps. The BN Bluesmaster Amp (Dumble calls it the "HRM") does a great Fender tone (with that great touch-sensitive breakup) and a mean Marshall inspired tone from the lead channel (it has its own internal tone controls). After owning everything else I could get my hands on, these are where I've landed. And I don't consider "Smooth" the quintessential Dumble tone, although I don't mind hearing the song once or twice a year!
cmatthes Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Sonny (tonewise) could crush most mere mortals playing a WalMart First Act through an iPod.
