Gibson - - Pete Townshend 50th Anniv SG - - anybody (Murkat?)

Question

Forget about the white body/headstock/case features - - but has anybody tried out one of these? I think there were introduced about 18 months ago as a limited edition. Seem to be sold out most everywhere but Wildwood has them discounted (to close out?),

Murkat, were you working at Gibson when these came out?

I posted in the experts forum about the wraparound lightning bridge tailpiece 1-2 weeks ago. I have to tell you I have owned three Hamer p90 Specials and I never got a great p90 sound out of those. Thinking Live at Leeds and Mountain Rising. The recent threads on P90s and Duncan P90s are making me think they were too lame. Wondering if the TOMs were sucking tone.

Thanks in advance. GO IRISH.

I could watch that nut tune up for hours.

We sold a couple of them. I am not a big SG fan and I would have bought either one of them. Both played and sounded killer, one of the few guitars that every one in the store liked.

Not sure if I posted it here or elsewhere, but I was hanging out in Bluzboy66's shop a few months back. He was "tweaking' one of those for a customer, and let me check it out. I was REALLY impressed at how nice that one was. Mike then told me that they were selling for under $1k at GC. He had swapped out the lightning bolt bridge/tp for a Faber compensated unit, but apart from that, it was 100% stock.

Impressive little guitar for the price.

I'd hit it!

Greg Koch can cook some gristle.

Better hurry, these seem to be selling quickly. 7 or 8 listed yesterday, down to 3 on the site tonight.

Not a big SG fan but this looks and sounds bad ass.

The sub 1K price tag seems a steal too.

What are the differences between this and the CS Pete T. model ?

Entertaining demo, rare for me to watch one all the way through.

The CS has a big ol' honkin' neck, while the 50th has a 60s Slim Profile.

I really wanted one of the 50th PTSGs, but that huge anniversary decal on the headstock just turns me off to no end for some reason.

Update time.

My nephew lives in Boulder and he and his music teacher have bought several guitars and other gear from Wildwood. His teacher placed a call for me today and they are going to play a few and report back. Also. he said they have a bunch of them in stock.... more than the three listed on their site. Badger Dave, you were right. over the last week there were five, then six, then three. Have you been scoping these out, too?

If you like Greg Koch and this guitar - - on youtube you can fiind quite a few more demos (10+?). They seem to be pretty consistent - - in his hands, at least.

Thank you all for your input. I think I'll be picking one up in the next day or two. And then live with it for a while. This is a bit more than I wanted to spend right now. NGD pix next week I hope.

The only thing I'd worry about is the Grovers making it neck heavy. I have a couple recent (2009 + 2011) SGs, and they're both very light guitars. Heavier tuners would have a really big impact on their balance, I think.

I have been watching and decided to pick one up. I have to say that my experience with Wildwood was pretty impressive. I picked the one I wanted from the website and placed the order online. A few hours later I got an e-mail from Troy at Wildwood. He said they were setting up the guitar and noticed a small finish flaw. He included a detailed photo. Offered a nice partial refund or I could pick out another guitar. I took the refund. A few minutes later he sent another email with another photo of a finish crack near the nut. Same offer and I again took the refund. Ended up saving a good piece of change on an already nicely priced guitar.

I give them an A+

BadgerDave; Which one did you choose? I was leaning towards SN xxxx597 of the three left on the website yesterday morning. I emailed Wildwood before the store opened. My nephew's guitar teacher, who is a loyal Wildwood customer, called Troy, too, and asked him to check out what was left. Troy went through a couple not yet listed on the website and found one to his liking. Troy emailed me, I called him and I pulled the car over and whipped out the credit card. He asked me my string preference and said it would get a fresh set-up. Didn't mention any flaws today, but I guess I'll look it over pretty carefully when it gets here on Monday.

The Koch videos sold me. He was playing through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and an OCD.

btw here's a link to the teacher. I was listening at work today low volume. Great player. Pink Floyd-y style on some tracks. https://soundcloud.com/gabrielperry

A pic of my youngest son when we visited Wildwood last August. He's about 4-5" taller now somehow...he'll definitely be able to touch the Vee next time we're out there!

Okay,

Who has one of these in their hands yet? I have major gas for one of these after the Wildwood demo. But Greg can do that to you with any guitar he has his hands on.

Hows the neck? Pickups Low output, medium, hot. I would like a medium weight one, I don't like realy light guitars. Total value and vibe of the guitar?

Give me info to enable me.

Mine won't get here 'til Tuesday afternoon.

Call Troy or Josh and tell them they dealt with Tom in Cleveland and he is refeering you to them. They have more in stock than the ones on the website, I believe.. Talk to them. Very helpful

The ones I have researched cam in at 7 pounds and less. There was one at about 7.5 pounds.

I'll have mine tomorrow.

I've already had a great experience with Wildwood buying a Reverend Reeves Gabrels a few months ago. They do know how to treat a customer. Not the cheapest prices, but very fair prices and they make you happy you bought from them.

Not to beat a dead horse, but there are now six up on the Wildwood website.. A couple weigh in at 7.55 pounds, or 1/2# more than some of the lighter ones.. I am not sure I could tell the difference, but maybe the heavier ones would balance better. In one of the videos (since taken down), Koch said he found they were pretty consistent across the lot and he probably demoed 20 of them.

It also means there are a couple more Greg Koch demos

I've spent some time with the SG this weekend and I'm impressed. Honestly, I doubt that I would have noticed the minor finish flaws that Wildwood caught. The setup was perfect.

The guitar weighs just under 7 lbs. The first thing I noticed was the way the entire guitar resonates when you strum an open chord. Lots of vibration through the body and neck - a very good sign! The neck feels slightly thicker than Gibson's usual slim 60s profile and it's definitely a bit wider than recent Hamer necks, but not uncomfortably so. I'd say the profile is a touch flatter in the back with full "shoulders". Kind of the opposite of a Fender V profile. I like it.

No issue at all with the Grover's. It balances perfectly without a hint of neck dive.

I haven't had a chance to turn it up so no tone report yet, but, so far, I'd say these are very good guitars.

Thanks for the report,

I'm either on this, or that Korina Jr. that was posted today.

I guess I should make up my mind fast because one won't be around very long.

Glad to hear it balances well. I really like the U shaped necks Gibson's been using on recent issue SGs.

I unpacked the Townshend SG tonight and played it a bit. A little "White Room," a little Who and then back into the case. It made me want to play longer and louder - and I wanted to - but my daughter is studying for finals.

Was playing through the Fender SuperChamp XD. This guitar has a very nice ring to it and very good sustain, even through the SuperChamp. I need to plug it into the Dr Z Carmen Ghia.. Wish I hadn't sold my OCD pedal. I think this could be a very good guitar. Seems to be a keeper, especially having bought it unseen. I have had three P90 Specials and they never imparted that same feeling, as much as I wanted to find "the one." Same with a new Standard I had for a while. This one wants to be played.

It has a very bright white nitrocellulose finish.. Will probably tone down in a couple years. Smells great, looks great. Am already over with "but it ain't cherry." Who headstock is a bit gimmicky but I can't see it when playing. Who case is cool. It is a very tight fit in the case.

BTW, Wildwood was back up to six for sale today. Here's one of the newer additions to the site. I love when Koch keeps coming back to the same notes (starting about 1:10) that.satisfy even him.
