Technique part 2 (Blatant chops video)

First off, you read the subject so if you whine about the video's content you have only yourself to blame and you're being a baby. No one's got a gun to your head to watch this. If you're wanting to see something else other than shred chops on guitar read no further and go to a thread about pickups, bridges, guitar colors, etc.

Ok, with that out of the way here's something I thought some members might ENJOY. This is Michael Angelo Batio and his claims to fame are:

1. He's (supposedly) the world's fastest guitarist

2. He can play all this with his right or left hands (ambidextrous)

3. He can play all this stuff with his fretting hands upsidedown (about 2 min. into video)

3. He can play two necks at the same time, one with each hand, playing independent parts.

Impressive stuff to watch! Sorry, couldn't find any of his 2 or 4 necked guitar antics.

I am clicking this link because I want to see insane shred guitar and understand that's all this video contains! I hereby give up my right to bitch and moan about the lack of "feel" and "taste" which are only matters of opinion anyways.

I got to see him play the double neck and the 4 neck at a guitar clinic years ago. Very impressive. As technically impressive as the dual independent tapping was I liked what he played better when he stuck to a regular guitar. At some point he played some of the solo from Gary Moore's "End of The World" (giving Gary big props afterward) and my jaw dropped.

Super nice guy and very tongue in cheek about the whole metal scene and the silliness of his band at the time (Nitro). I think I still have a signed poster somewhere! :-)

I thought that was Chris Impellitteri? :-)

Angelo is the world's fastest HUMAN guitarist. I've seen Impellitteri's instructional video. I'm convinced he's really a robot. No one made of flesh and blood could be that devoid of personality.

So the wig really is a gag!

Holy god that guy is amazing. Someone posted a video of him a couple months back where he was playing two necks at once, and doing silly things like curling the guitar while he played etc... and I wasn't very impressed. But this is very musical in addition to being technically impressive. The effortless sweep-picking is my favorite bit.

Bill, you might be able to play one note faster than anyone else (did you already play it?) but one thing's for sure - nobody swaps a guitar out as fast as Micheal Angelo and his invisible guitar tech. :) I'm guessing the video was shot after the fact as a "lip-sync" for demonstrative purposes.

how is this measured? I can play one note really really fast

It's measured by distance running. He can grab a guitar off the rack at GC and make it out the door and around the corner before security even registers an alarm.

I don't think Impellitteri is the fastest, just the best immitation of Yngwie. He baltantly rips off Yngwie's instrumentals and you can luiterally play some of them back to back and it's the exact same. That's really, really lame. The funniest part is he doesn't credit Yngwie as an influence!!! I mean c'mon!!! That's like me playing Hot For Teacher and changing the lyrics and 3 notes in the solo and saying "I never listened to Eddie Van Halen. He had no impact on me whatsoever." Give credit where it's due.

Anyway, before that rant I was going to say: This is pretty tame for some of the stuff I've heard from Michael Angelo and certainly not his fastest stuff (which boggles my mind).

I spent some time with Michael last year and he's a killer guitarist and a great guy too. People have to realize that playing so fast is his shtick, but he can play anything he wants, he just can't sit still!

I had the pleasure of playing some clinics for Randall and then for Wayne Charvel's WRC Gibson line with Mike...really nice guy and a great player. He'd sit down and nail the changes to "Misty" or "Giant Steps" or some other jazz thing and then get up and do that kind of stuff... and what do you do when you're standing next to this guy and he says "go for it!" ..?!?!??.... LOL..

MCC, I agree.. LOL!....Impelleteri is completely devoid of a personality...

Mr. Guitarguy... I love the disclaimer on the link! :)

I play 64th notes all the time, usually one at a time.

I can play them in endless runs.

As long as we're talking less than 20bpm, of course.

And this guy has no soul. He's got no feel or taste and (wait... gotta scroll the thread to see what other things some fucknozzle says I can't say) And that's a FACT! :)

I've also been pretty impressed with Michael A's playing live, and I am the "Anti-shred" guy. Sure, it's fun to watch and all, but I can't bring myself to LISTEN to it. That guy goes far deeper than the flash and speed thing when he does his clinics. I think 99% of us here would be very pleasantly surprised.

Jack,

Thanks buddy! How are things my friend? It' been a while since I talked to you!

Oh, here's a quote for you all:

NIGEL TUFNEL: When you get older you realize that what's important is not the amount of notes that you play. It's if you're thinking about them after you've played them.

And of course (Nigel discussing his own unique music theory):

GW: What happens in the case of a chord like G13?

TUFNEL: Okay. This is my other theory:

If you're playing that type of music, you shouldn't be doing it.

GW: Shouldn't be doing the Nigel Tufnel Theory of Music?

TUFNEL: No — you shouldn't be playing

music! Because what good are people who do that jazzy sort of stuff? It's all too low-volume. Have you noticed that? What are they trying to hide? What have they got to be embarrassed about? If you're a good player, you play loud so people can hear it-that's why we plug these things in. If you play an electric guitar — I don't care if it's a Gibson 175 or a Charlie Christian — turn the fuckin' thing up!

To those people who do that 13th stuff I say, "By the time you count to 13, who cares? The song's over anyway. So let's play some serious rock and roll." It's all very impressive, I suppose, for some musicologists who play jazz and all that — let them have their way. But they must be afraid of something if they're not playing loud.

Nice cat. And if you watch the video closely, in some parts you see it move!

For those that have the bandwith, there's a higher-quality video on the Dean site (click the picture on the right to download it). I think he's technically impressive, but I could list some Vai or Yngwie songs that are just as impressive, but that also resonate with me emotionally (but then again, lots of people think those guys are soulless hacks so what do I know? :)).

This will be my only weekend with any downtime until Christmas Eve.. writing a lot of whacked out things lately instrumentally and doing some vocal stuff as well...not to mention the kids' homework is keeping me busy..got home from teaching tonight around 8:30 and after a late dinner..helped my 8 year old build a model city for a project due Friday...I think I'm starting to get this multi-tasking thing down..lol!

How are you my friend?

I saw him at a clinic in the early 90's, what I saw live was even crazier and more impressive than the video. As far as raw technique I don't know if anyone can touch him. I stuck around after the clinic to chat and he seemed like a real nice, down to earth kind of dude. He was goofing around on an acoustic guitar when I asked him what he thought about Di meola. He proceeded to rip into some and said that he was definitely an influence. There is absolutely more to this guy than just shred. He was playing some very cool jazz type progressions and comps as well.

Jack,

All is well. My band is getting ready to release an album soon. I also have moved to vocal duties. It's quite a change of pace!! I'm still very doubtfull of myself, but we keeping getting great feedback, especially on the vox, so i guess I need to relax. lol! Glad things are good with the kids! You chould post some of your own shred videos on here!
