specialk Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Heart attack. He was 74. A great songwriter. http://www.jjcale.com/
Steve Haynie Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Everyone has heard at least one of the songs he wrote.
G Man Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 Ah Jeez, that's sad news indeed. Love JJ's smooth groove, just a great and humble player. RIP Mr. Cale.
3of5 Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 I loved his understated style of singing and guitar playing. He was a major influence on me when I was learning to play guitar. I saw him play live at McCabes Guitar shop in Santa Monica about 1984 or so. The show was so like him, cool, calm and understated. No band. Just accompanied by his girlfriend playing piano or guitar. He played bass pedals with his foot and used a drummer on a chip as he put it.

RichRS6 Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 A sad loss of a great songwriter and guitar player. My favourite J.J. Cale story (not sure if it's true or not but who cares) is the one where an interviewer asked him what he thought about Eric copying his style and he said"Eric ? Eric who ?"
Disturber Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 Great songwriter and he was very much into creating the right sound(s) for his recordings. I got the Anthology double CD in 1997 and listened to it a lot. His soundscape is unique.Eric Clapton stole a lot from JJ Cale. Mark Knopler would work in a butcher shop if it was not for Cale, he stole just about everything from him. Many musicians listened in, stole the style and sound and made it huge. Cale was not a stadium rock guy. He liked the dessert. He was bigger than all of them.....
mudshark Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 This is a worthy addition to a musical video collection:
Sentinel Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 One of the great guitarists - 100% feeling - I just love his soloing!I saw him playing in Stockholm in the seventies! The whole bandwas sitting comfortably rested on folding chairs. So great, so cool, so laid back......literally! :-)
Hamerhack Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 R.I.P.We played "After Midnight" and "Cocaine" in his memory at today's jam.
KH Guitar Freak Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 R.I.P. Me thinks the price on a Casio RP-380 is going to go skyhigh...
