gun laws out east..Pa,dc,nj,ny,etc then life in general

Ok we are considering a relocation..for music, guitars, life. My wife carries everywhere, she's very attractive and gets harassed a lot. If we move from the woods where we are now ,the world is a little rougher and I worry ,which is why she carries.

So I know from selling guns via internet that there are restrictions in many of those states. So here is the big question, Does any one know what Pa(where I been offered position) laws are on carrying and guns in general(we own a few fire arms) and how does conceal carry work all those states.

Then here is the secondary part....we have thought about a ton of positive things why to go..BUT..we have never spent any time in the region, with exception of highways and hotels. So we need a little scaring to bring this back in to perspective. All the dirt you can give us will be much appreciated. And even better if you have lived somewhere west and then moved east that can compare the two...I have lived all over west of the Mississippi.

Not only that, the live music/band scene in Central PA is a lot more active than a lot of places.

yeah there might be some of that too...

DC sucks unless you are a celebrity like David Gregory. Violate gun laws at will if you have your own Sunday news program. If you are in the military and protecting the nation, then don't dare to have even a non-function shotgun shell rattling around in your trunk: you will go to jail.

what a shell?...I have more rounds floating around my car than I could count...the wagon has a whole box 22 in the heater vents alone...with the price of .22 its very temping to dig'em out but then I remember I am not low yet. :P ..seriously just a round or two floating around the car?

his ex wife set him up...but still thats messed up

I know this does not need to be said, but I'm saying it anyway.

The SECOND this thread gets political, it gets nuked.

So far, so good...

Carry on!

Chris.....That's not playing fair. You capitalized "SECOND" to cause a subliminal association with SECOND AMENDMENT....while, at the same time, warning us not to steer off the road into political trenches. :)

But...steering back onto topic....Link to story about 3D home printing and how someone printed the first gun at home that actually fired bullets about six months ago.

SAME STORY.....mentions home 3D printers that can print GUITARS. Anyone try that yet?

Sorry, this was the one I was thinking of:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/13/AR2009011302840.html

I think I confused the two stories in my mind.

The details are significantly different in the 2nd story.

Still, it seemed he was being responsible. He wasn't threatening anyone with it, and it was clear he was transporting it for peaceful purposes, with no intent to discharge or brandish it.

If he hadn't had a flat tire and tried to be responsible about it, he wouldn't have gotten arrested and wouldn't have served time in jail.

You can say he shouldn't have been trying to transport it through DC...you could also say David Gregory shouldn't have had the magazine illegally in DC just to make a point, either. If the prosecutor can decide the public was not threatened from David Gregory's violation, he could have done the same thing for a double-amputee servicemember.

My apologies for confusing the story with my bad memory.

(Other than that, the story was accurate! :) )

ok this one was a better example..ok gotcha..DC is not area to mess around...I have luck like that guy.

Best state in the east for carry - Vermont. NH is not bad at all, Maine a little more restricted. MA, CT, RI NY… forget it.

NH winters suck more each year….

Go for PA or the Carolinas, I say.

Deer are pretty big and plentiful in PA. You can shoot them but it's easier to hit them with your car. Are the roads still all fucked up there? Every time I've been through it's constant construction areas and lane closures.

Geez - how long since you've been here? A couple days? A week maybe?

There's a bridge not far from here that's been under repair for something like three years now, and they're crowing that it's looking like it will be finished AHEAD of schedule.

Two years ago they had three major road projects going on around us - there was only one way to travel to avoid any of it.

I grew up in NE Ohio.

Really? Me, too!

I'm currently in FL, and getting a concealed license here is relatively easy.

florida is the easiest state to get it in...its also the state the covers the most other states.

Don't need a permit to carry in Alaska.

Doesn't get much easier than that. But if you want one they are available.

Posted

They give drivers licenses to people who can't see, and CC permits to people who can't see, hear, think straight, complete a sentence, hold a job or provide one character reference in the good old state of Florida.

I think its legal now to fire warning shots in FL if you think your life is in danger.

I'm not anti-gun, but right now I have a few neighbors who want to go shoot a gator in our suburban, kid friendly neighborhood. Morons like that end up putting one through the neighbors house all the time.

My mom can't see and they didn't renew her a DL. It's not that easy to get a CC permit either. You are being given misinformation. It is illegal to discharge a weapon within city limits and killing a gator is still a felony. Brandishing a weapon still brings an automatic 3 years. No trial. Straight to jail. But none of this has anything to do with PA or the OP.

From what I've seen of PA other than the roadblocks it is beautiful country. I would love to bag a deer there some day. Went through Philly once and said I would never return. For a brief time being lost I met several assholes in a convenience store. Richmond VA too. Same trip from a previous life. South of Richmond I met some very polite people at a convenience store just before crossing into NC for a stopover in Raleigh to visit my brother. This was '04.

Don't mess around with handguns or other firearms in Massachusetts (correctly pronounced "Massive-two-shits"). They are - a least were recently - one of the most restrictive states in the US for firearms. Last I checked they have a one year mandatory jail sentence if you are caught carrying a hand-cannon - licensed or not.

There are some good internet sources for gun laws. A local attorney out here is a true expert on gun laws and has a book and website http://firearmslaw.com/ you could check out. My favorite gun forum on the web is sigforum.com which has a lot of members from all around the country who would be pleased to discuss specifics about gun laws and quality of life in PA or anywhere else you're considering.

NJ has great beaches, especially south Jersey (south of Atlantic City). Those beaches are about 90 minutes from Philly. If you lived in PA you would have a lot of nice choices for beach areas within a few hours, including NJ and MD.

But in NJ you cannot carry hollowpoints. It is legal to possess them in your home, but not loaded in a carry gun. Be sure to check reciprocity carefully. NJ is not a gun friendly state in general.

You will have to get new carry permits in whatever state you move to. Reciprocity only counts if your residence is properly accounted for. A Resident MN license is no longer valid if you are no longer a resident of MN. Also, the gun-free-school-zone federal law says you cannot have a gun within 1000 feet of any school property or any place where a school event is happening (e.g. wrestling team dinner at a restaurant you go into?) unless you have a valid concealed carry permit from that state. So if you have a MN permit and are in Utah, your permit may be valid to carry in Utah under reciprocity but you cannot be in possession in a school zone in Utah.

If you live out east you should become familiar with the FOPA for when you drive into other states.

Be aware that flying with a gun in your checked baggage is not possible through Newark or JFK or LaGuardia airports. It should be legal but they tend to arrest gun owners who declare the gun in their checked bag.

Maine's alright. Shall issue state.

I bought a shotgun and a .22 holding my three year old daughter in my arms.

300 yards from residences and you can shoot. Open carry. I think I'd blow minds/get a serious talking too were I to push the limits on that concept and walk around like the "wild west," but the idea is for hunters to walk around in-season, which I see (and hear) plenty of during hunting seasons.

But then again, you've got to be 18 to buy BBs.

No hollow points? What are they thinking? They want you to throw Ball Ammo at a target? They'd rather the round passed through a soft target and into the next? I don't get it.

Very good information about reciprocity.

The Federal Gun Free School Zone law is a bit concerning. I always carry when I'm walking my dog. My front porch is literally 200 yards from an elementary school and 400 yards from a middle school.

No offense, I'm not anti gun, I own 3 guns myself ... But if I was really concerned about my wife's safety I would be checking into crime statistics and finding a safe place to live where it wasn't a necessity to carry a gun to protect myself. Not states that have the laxest gun laws. I don't know much about the east coast but I've lived all over the west coast and have had plenty of hot girl friends ... never once did I think it would be safer if they carried a gun. Really, are you serious?

Yikes !!!

I'd say a move to the west coast is in order

Harrisburg/Central PA is NOT a high crime urban area. It's far more suburban than urban, and one of those places most people describe as "a great place to raise a family". To some that may mean boring, but it's not Philly or anything, and there aren't a lot of cowboys packing heat everywhere.

I guess you need to grab a bench at the entrance of your local walmart and people watch and see how many people with lumps in their coats walk in a hour...It been as low as 15 % and as high as 60% in last year(all over the country)..I observe while she(wife) shops...Guns are everywhere these days...most who dont carry dont notice...but everyone we know who carries- sees them too..,We dont know any one up here who does not...same with everyone we know in colorado, oregon, new mexico,texas.arizona...and the last time we were at our condo in vegas her carrying kept us from get our car stolen...they tapped on glass with small revolver-.32 maybe...and she tapped back with DE 6" barrel brushed nickle 357...we watched them stubble over each other as they ran off....She does not leave home even to go to the neighbors with out at least one in her holster and one under the seat. I dont see that changing moving from the woods to even a suburban area much less an urban area. And when you need to travel somewhere at late hour and less than respectable area of cities, where all the cool stores hide, we have no worries.

Yikes !!!

I lived all over west coast...not sure where you been but I would be MORE inclined to carry out there...and would never live in (and THIS NOT political)..Nazi California again and then there is the politics there....in 1989 my first step off the bus in LA was straight in to the barrel of a .38 snub...and have similar encounters San Diego to Seattle. I like Columbia river valley..but the economy does not match cost of living. Crime and violence is going to be higher no matter where would moved. Where I am now is one of the lowest anywhere, and there is still an element of caution.

Well, once again no offense but it must suck to be you. I've never experienced any gun violence at all, ever. i've lived in some pretty tough places too. 2 years in Echo park. Nada, zip, no guns, no violence ... heard a gunshot once (in TWO whole years). 2 years in downtown San Jose when it was super low rent, bad part of town. zero gun violence... Oakland, SF, LA, Hollywood, San Diego, Sacramento, Seattle, Portland. Never saw a gun. No violence. OK, Once a bar fight in San Diego where i cut my hand on some broken glass and had to drag my girlfriend out by her hair.

And I'used to go out drinking A LOT. I'm no librarian. Loved me some seedy bars and going to see unknown bands. Very rarely would anything violent happen and certainly never saw a gun. One time in a bar a guy pulled out a big knife (just to scare me I guess). I laughed because it was so ridiculous, he felt embarrassed, put it away and left.

So in 56 years of a life full of sex and drugs and rock n roll the extent of the damage is (besides many lost brain cells)... a couple of minor bar fights, a few speeding tickets, roughed up by the cops, once in San Jose, once in Ensenada (OK, THEY had guns :) Robbed while working at a 7/11 by a homeless guy with a machete (also pretty darn funny) threatened with a knife and ... thats about it.

In any of those occasions a gun would have just made it worse ... I'm going to shoot a poor homeless guy over 28 dollars?

Anyway, no point in arguing ... just be safe and only shoot someone as a last resort, please.

I dont carry I grew up rough and the 38 snub was in my hand before he knew it...but point still remains I see guns everyday..in cali the handgun laws are a but tougher..a producer friend of mine wife got quite upset when my brother and I unloaded 100 rounds in 60 seconds when they were visiting one night. They both said they never saw a gun before and both born and raised in LA.

My wife on the other hand could have in the past had she been carrying then but a torn eye lid and loss of eyebrow ring instead the quick way

let me ask you never walked down the wrong street with the wrong colored hat and get approached by the "locals" in wrong part of town and get confronted usually staring at a barrel?..its happened to me all over LA- Miami- Dallas- Albuquerque- Vegas.

I guess all 5'7" of me walking down the street must be menacing sight, cause for concern

Again I think the guns have always been there ,just not looking for them. most guns are not visible..that why they call it concealed..but a gun is almost impossible to conceal in every day clothes. But when you know what to look for they are everywhere.
