Nothing but bad luck lately...

Question

Been having bad luck lately. I decided I needed to buff my 1992 Hamer Special P90. A lot of scratches did some drop fills etc.... ready to be buffed with meguiar's thin cut and swirl remover.

So I removed everything before buffing... pickups, bridge etc... Then I had a hard time removing the plastic pot knobs. Wrapped some string line underneath the volume knobs and pulled up and the covers popped right out.

The last thing to remove was the plastic tone knob. Used same method pulled up and ... the entire shaft came out. WTF????

Now what? Don't want to replace pot with generic. I suppose I could take the whole pot apart and try to epoxy the shaft back on or find a new shaft to put in. I would like to keep the original tone pot.

Here it is:

Help. Need ideas.

Thanks

Simply, glue it back in. Try without glue first.

UnkaGreg has 'em (Hamer pots). 717 seven three zero 9775

Simple fix.

I use the T-shirt method (wrap a T-shirt around the knob, twist tight and pull). Haven't had an issue since I started doing that, but that pot was likely to pull out using any method.

Murkat is spot on with this one. Gotta replace the pot.

I had that happen as a kid with my first really good guitar (a Les Paul Custom). Bummed me out for a long time because I didn't know back then that the pot could just be swapped out cheaply. Played it without a functioning tone pot on the neck pickup for a few years!

Next time you find yourself ordering something from StewMac, add one of these to the cart. It gives you the leverage needed to pull the knob straight up and off rather than the back and forth wiggling as you work the knob off.

I have one of those stew mac things, and they are the real deal. Also a lot cheaper than their other puller, which pulls just about everything, including things like bridge bushings. I used it on my G&L legacy which had the numbers in a location that made no sense at all, and they weren't all the same either.

Don't you hate it when the right answer is exactly what you didn't want to hear?

Hey,

Don't listen to any of these guys, they are all wrong.

Send me a PM for my shipping address and send me the guitar.

Problem solved.

No worries about scratches, pots, etc. Just peace and relaxation.

Nothing but bad luck lately, eh? Buck up dude. Luck is statistical. Eventually your cards will come up.

Be a patient predator. Some nice tasty prey will come along soon enough.

It happen so many countless times with new pots while building out guitars at the GCS.

Brand new CTS pot, using a knob puller, pop, shaft and knob. So many pots trashed. it happens.

the wafer board is pressed on the shaft, shaft end butted. Some nice CTS pots are set ringed on top,

like the old gibson stamped CTS pots of the 80's, early 2000. No more retainer rings... saving bucks...

easy to trash.

So, when replacing a knob, before installing, put a lil smear of chap stick on the pot shaft prior to knob placement.

Thanks everyone!

Didn't want to replace the original Hamer pot. Took it apart and the bottom piece that the post goes into was plastic. Also, the post still fit into the plastic piece pretty tight. Winded up dropping some super glue on the tip of the post and putting it back into the plastic piece. Put it back together and it works. Tried pulling it really hard and its not coming out.

Thanks!

Pete
