Question

Posted

So I've acquired two sets of nicely used WCR pickups.

1 set of Godwoods and a set of Darkbursts.

So my question is what to do with them.

I actually like the sounds I'm getting from all of my Hamers so I'm looking for suggestions on which would work best where.

Take 2 Studios or Standards, solder them in and rock your pants down.

PS. Don't forget to take pics and give us a tone report. B)

Thanks for all replies.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I'm with Cynic, if you LIKE the way they sound why change it? I only make changes to address things I don't like. (I know that doesn't help with the question).

I like them as they are.

But would I like them better with the WCR pickups?

I traded into these at what I felt was an exceptional deal, all I've heard about them is how great they are supposed to be so I figured they should go into the guitars I'm fooling with. The truth is the only guitar/pickup combo I might have a problem with is the Newport Pro/Seths. It sounds great but can get boomy if I crank it much. But I've been told that I could cure this with a bit of wax, So really don't need them there either.

Bottom line is I got 'em, might as well use them.

Next bottom line is that the way I play, Almost no one ever hears them but me.

I did not sit down and play them side by side, but........

I do like the Seths in a Newport. However, playing one with WCRs (PG/GM set, which I believe is more or less the same as the Crossroads) seemed to be a little more strongly toward ROCK. I assume the Godwoods would be even more so.

You might want to give the winder his own self a call....I found him very helpful, though that was in the context of buying a new set rather than inquiring about used ones in hand.

If nothing else, the maker should have a pretty good idea of how to get to where you wanna be.....IF you tell him the guitars/materials in question, the sound you are getting now (and what you would seek to improve) and (sorta same thing) what you want it to sound like at the end.

IMO, each Hamer I have (or had) with WCR replacing the stock pups was better for hte experience....To my ears, YMMV,etc.

Oh, BTW, any time I am wondering where to stick new pickups, I just ask my wife. She tells me! ;)

My Tally Pro sounded really good with the stock Duncan pickups. Tried the WCRs on a whim and it was an improvement... Try it - worst that might happen is you don't like them better, or at all. and reverse the swap... B)

You forgot one choice.

You need to add, " In The Trash Bin"

I replaced the Seth Lovers in my Newport Pro, and love the guitar even more (though it is hard to believe that is possible). The Lovers just didn't match well for me. When the amp is set up for one of the pickups, the other doesn't sound right. Muddy in the neck, harsh in the bridge. A different set of pickups made a big difference for me.

So I voted for the GodWoods in the Newport.
