Nice! Germany was noted to be a hot bed of Hamer back in the day so not surprised some good ones are hanging out there...................too bad the photos in this auction are so distant, wish we could have a better look at it..........that looks to have a beautiful top. :)

I've seen dot version sunburst Sunbursts from 78-79 go from anywhere between 1200 to 2100 €uros during the past years.

1500-1700 €uros for a dot neck should be a pretty decent price in Europe, if the guitar is in good shape, with original pickups etc. Ad a little for a bound and crowned version.

That one looks fine. But I'd want to see some close up shots as well. The original neck pickup is gone, sadly. Might be the original double creme bridge pickup that they put in the neck though.

I was just super lucky to score a 79 Sunburst in Germany last year, in great condition, for 550. :D Don't expect that to ever happen again.

I had a little mail exchange with the seller who also is the current owner of that particular 1979 Sunburst.

He send me some better images and also answers to the questions I mailed.

Here is the rundown:

  • second owner, bought it from original owner 5 years ago
  • original owner bought it in well known music store in Germany in 1979
  • original owner had DiMarzio neck pickup replaced with a SH4 Seymour Duncan in 1983
  • case is from Hamer but not from 1979
  • original Groover tuners and Hamer Bridge
  • current owner had frets exchanged and a new bone nut installed by a professional luthier
  • guitar also has new pots, original pots are sold together with the guitar

According to him, the guitar is in excellent condition for its age and was well taken care of.

Of course I have read "the book" and all the valuable information here on the forum on old Sunbursts.
So I decided to join the club of luck Sunburst owner and hit the BIN button.

Now I feel complete.

I have been looking for a nice Sunburst for quite some time.

Will try to pickup the guitar on the weekend since the seller only lives 2 hours from where I live.

It looks, plays, and sounds terrific. Instrument only has a few small dings and dongs.

Nothing unusual. Truly a gem and an outstanding guitar, even among my other Hamer guitars.

Here are some more details:

It is serial number is 9 1386. Has a 3-piece neck and Hamer's sustain block bridge.

The original black knobs (conic shape) are in the case as is the original nut.

Original owner had golden Schaller strap locks installed when guitar was purchased.

I will change those to Dunlop.

This was also the default option at that time, right?

I have some questions and appreciate your input these points:

1) What type of sunburst color is this?

The sunburst very light and looks different in real life than on the pictures.
It does not seem to be a classic cherry or tobacco type of sunburst.

Anyone here who can tell me how this sunburst variation was called by Hamer?

2) Bridge pick-up is not a stock DiMarzio in double creme

The original owner replaced the stock DiMarzio bridge pick-up with a zebra SH4 Seymour Duncan (JB) in 1983.

As a result, it has two zebra pickups now which looks a bit odd in my eyes.

However, I actually like the SH4 and plan to keep it where it is right now.

Still, I wonder what the chances are to find an original Hamer DiMarzio from 1979 in double creme for a reasonable price?

3) Hamer guitar case from 1979/1980?

It is not the original hardshell case for this guitar.
Apparently, the original owner got it new shortly after the purchase of the Sunburst guitar from the same store.

So according to the previous owner, it dates back to the same time period.

The case is in excellent condition and looks newer.

Anyone here who could date it approximately?

The was made in Canada as stated on the leather lip to the tool department.

Congrats for this great looking guitar!

Case should be from the 1990´s (m.o). The one from my 79 sunburst have a brown colour inside... But does that realy matter?

Great looking guitar!

The case looks like one of the Monaco cases that have been selling on Ebay recently...

Nice case- I use one with my B basses, since its more compact than the originals.

When I bought my first 1979 Black Sunburst back in January of last year it did not have a case............I too wanted a original Hamer case. I looked around for one for some time until I found one just like yours on Ebay.As some other Sunburst owners here will confirm the one you have is actually better than the original it would have come with..........this is a stronger better built case thats much more plush inside than the original Les Paul type it came with. I have my second 1979 Black Hamer Sunburst I just got here in its original case but I have another case just like yours I'd put it in if I would take it out of the house. BTW period correct DiMarzios are up for sale on Ebay but they are not cheap. This is a cool guitar! Congrats! :)
