SuperPro DIY Pickup Swap - Who's done it?

Question

I want to put these Lollars in my SuperPro, but obviously it isn't the most user friendly guitar for that swap. Has anyone done a swap on a SP themselves, and if so, how did you go about it? Any tricks or tips?

As I understand it, there is no need to swap the pickups in a SuperPro.

Confirmed.

It all pulls out via the bridge pickup hole. Tie string or dental floss on all components and guide them back through their holes. You are removing entire wiring harness including jack. Pretty sure selector switch doesn't need to come out but its been almost 10 years since I've done it

That's assuming they're the originals to start with :P.

Thanks, HHB.

I did it last fall. Put some Rio Grande PUs in. Took me about 90 minutes, and the way HBB describes is vorrect. Bridge PU hole. Tie all the pots and the jack socket (?) on some strings, then pull them through the PU whole. Solder what you have to solder. Then comes the nice part to put the stuff back. Take care not to twist the wiring. Have patience. Be sure that tbe kids are sleeping.

It could be done.

It seems to be the same mess as with the Newport. Eventually, you will be more happy than ever when its finished. B)

In my Super Pro the previous owner just cut the pickup wires clean off, and then soldered the new pickups to the wire stumps that were still attached to the guitar. When I swapped the pickups I just did the same, as I didn't care for removing all the pots and the input jack etc.

Weird...Ted and I were chatting about this exact topic on the phone earlier today.

He has Seth Lovers in my future Superpro, and was debating putting the Custom and Custom/Custom in there.

:D

There is no debate. The Custom/Custom Custom pair is the only way to go.

I may let it alone. I played it the other night and found the Alnico Pros in there were actually pretty nice. I remembered loving them when I first got that guitar, but lately thinking they just sounded lifeless. Now I am back digging them.

FWIW, when I had the two SuperPros side by side, my personal preference WAS those Alnicos. The main reason I kept the original (and stock) was that I paid up a bit to get one with an "ultimate" top and factory piezo......Sort of a Super Duo Pro Tone. Or something like that. NAMM one-off, apparently.

BTW, I DO like it a lot with the Custom/Custom Custom. I thought it was edging closer to the next tier of my "surplus reduction" sale. But then I played it again and.......

I've said it before. I have Hamer Slammers in mine. And they sound great in the Super Pro. 10K in Hamer Slammer in the neck and 17K Hamer Slammer in the bridge.

I find my Super Pro to be fairly bright, and very articulate with a lot of honky woodines to it's tone. To much for my taste when I had a Seth in the neck and a 59 in the bridge (what it came with). I'd love to test the Custom pair. But a pair of Alnico II Pros, or a Slash set would be cool to try as well..... Or I've been lusting for a Alnico 2 Wolfetone Marshallheads set. I imagine they could be just right for the SP.

I could not get it to sound right with a pair of early 80's Hamer Dimarzio's. The output was to weak and the sound was to woody and honky. I think that the problem when pairing the Super Pro with a set of standard output (weak) paf's is that the guitar is so percusive due to it's chambering that it becomes honky. The seth neck and 59 bridge was a bit better, but still honky. This might be great for a country players though.

Disturber, just as you say. It dependes on what you play. However,I prefer lower wound pickups in hollow body or chambered guitars. It would be worth to series wire the pickups for the boost you talk about.

Sorry, would have to disagree. When I purchased mine,it just

didn't give me the sound I was looking for from the stock

pickups. Then again,i have never been a huge fan of SD

pickups. The Seths in my Newport is an exception.

Wait, Ted has TWO Superpros?!?

The Seths in MY future SP sound perfect to my ears.

Dropped new pups in to mine last week.

Early 80s Dimarzio DP103 in the neck and a first year Burstbucker 2 in the bridge. I like them in the a lot so far.

The Burstbucker sounds like a little ruder/grittier Antiquity. Sounds very nice.

The Dimarzio neck sounds warm and articulate. I had a pair of old Dimarzios in the SP Before, but I had Duncan covers on them and it didn't work apparently. They didn't sound as good as this one.
