JGravelin Posted December 1, 2015 Posted December 1, 2015 After a few prototypes, I finally got it. Kevin Bowers upcoming Shishkov Dark Angel guitar is pretty special and deserved a special set. I just finished the final builds and shipped them to Mike, and thought I'd share a couple of photos. Bridge:11.5k, unoriented roughcast AL5, with Floyd Rose-friendly 53mm pole spacing Neck: 8.0k, roughcast AL2, 50mm spacing for perfect string alignment Black and Chromed to the maximum. The bridge is a real rocker: aggressive yet linear across the frequency spectrum, measured and even in the lows, mids slightly up but not so much, and just the right amount of shimmer and pick attack on top - drop tuned high gain melt your face off with excellent note clarity and definition. The neck rips in it's own way: again, very linear in its response - kind of like the Shlabotnik neck, but bigger and juicier. No flab in the lows at all: wide, toneful, dynamic, and soulful. It matches up perfectly with the bridge pickup. Very sweet and musicial when combined too. I'm not selling any of these yet. Let's let Lord Bower get his guitar first - it's only polite!
BubbaVO Posted December 1, 2015 Posted December 1, 2015 Very cool. Can't wait to see that project in final form.
DBraz Posted December 1, 2015 Posted December 1, 2015 From the description they sound like my kinda pickups. Rock on!
RobB Posted December 1, 2015 Posted December 1, 2015 What’s the story with the mounting rings? Is it so the bobbins/coils won’t get chewed up from flailing plectrums?
JGravelin Posted December 1, 2015 Author Posted December 1, 2015 They are blinged out, it's true.Rob, do you mean the partial chrome covers or the mounting rings specifically? Either way, flailing plectrums, sweat, and adult libations will have a difficult time destroying those coils. Longevity and badassitude! I sent Kevin a few pictures of ideas/possibilities and he, being the super mellow cool guy that he is said "looks great, yeah! go for it". So I did. I'm imagining this guitar with the Floyd, all the black color, the inlays...Like Bubba said, I can't wait to see the end result!

It initially looked like the cover/rings were all one piece. I see now that they are separate. The first picture fooled me. My eyes are going, right along with my will to carry on, it seems.
Jakeboy Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 The really cool part is, like the Shlabotniks, I bet they sound every bit as good as they look!
kevinbower1959 Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 Way to go, Professor Gravelin This is one of those situations in life where you don't need to worry about how good something's gonna be - because you just KNOW it will be totally killer ....
Steve Haynie Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 It would be so nice to hear a live demonstration of those pickups in North America.

Josh built me a similar pickup and it is simply the best neck tone ever. No mud, hi-fi, and juicy all day long. This guy is on to something..................
mhmike Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 That sounds like the kind of set I want for my Standard (need more rock). Those will look great on the finished guitar.
Jakeboy Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 I love it when a pickup maker just figures it out.......and us happy packers reap the sonic benefits.
