Turdus Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Last I heard these guys went under. Between myself, and band mate, we had 4 of them at one time. Nice guitars, with little resale value. Seeing the pics of the firebirds in the other thread got me curious. I checked Ebay, and not many listed for sale, or even in the completed auction section.GMP website is still up, but I've not followed them. Have their guitars become super collectible all of a sudden?

jisham Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 No. There's one I had that I wish I still owned though.
MCChris Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 The lead player in the Cult tribute band has a purple GMP that he loves. His Les Paul is a distant No. 2 (sorry Jaye ).
killertone Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 I could never get into those headstocks. Great guitars but the headstock....yikes...
jisham Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 No worries Chris....it'd be a boring world if we all liked the same things. Nice Pawnshop he's got there though. Ultimately, the neck shapes are what ended up driving my decision to sell my GMPs. But, the one doublecut had a rounded LP style neck shape...shoulda kept that one.
atquinn Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 I'm definitely going to get one of the those GMP LP's with the blended neck heel as soon as one turns up. I think the Fender scale would make them pretty sweet for down-tuning. -Austin

belikerick Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 I could never get into those headstocks. Great guitars but the headstock....yikes... As compared to a Hamer headstock?!?! You've got to be kidding, right?
Jorge Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 I could never get into those headstocks. Great guitars but the headstock....yikes... As compared to a Hamer headstock?!?! You've got to be kidding, right? I would say it is a "little" less ugly than Hamer's. I find it incredible that some companies know they are making a big mistake, and still decide to stick with it no matter what.
MrGuitarguy Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 I probably would have bought on if it hadn't been for the 25.5" scale length on every guitar.
BCR Greg Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 GMP made great guitars. Their parent company went under, so the guitar guys went under as well. Too bad, I love the guitars they were making at the end of the run. A shame, really. These guys had balls.
princeofdarkness56 Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 I kick myself for not picking one up right before they went under. I will keep my eyes open and someday this bottom feeder will score one.
serial Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 They are VERY cool. Most seem a bit heavy, but sound and play great... Thanks to BCR/Greg and being in the right place at the right time, I ended up with this one-the last bass outta there.
cmatthes Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 I LOVE that bass - it is a bit heavy, but sounds like a freakin' train.I hate the headstock on the Vees, Explorers and would have purchased at least one of the FBs if they had done a 6-in-line on there (but NOOOOOOOOO!). Those sparkle finishes are/were the best in the biz.
tonyvieira Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 For anyone interested, Junior's Music in Clinton CT still has two in stockhttp://www.juniorsmusic.com/GMP/GMP.htm
princeofdarkness56 Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 The Roxie Specials were the best. Would hold up to anything out there. It's a crying shame they went out of business just because the parent company folded. Just for tax reasons. Ain't that a pisser.
formula73 Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 So basically you all mean to tell me that all the employees are not doing anything anymore? It seems like they'd be trying to start something up to pickup the pieces, kinda like the Heritage guys did with the old Kalamazoo plant. There's gotta be something going on. I just can accept that I'll not get a 3 p90 Firebird with a kahler.
cmatthes Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 And since they're not technically GMP anymore, you could probably get a cool headstock!
Steve Haynie Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 Thinking about it, if GMP went out of business the rights to headstock and body designs would be up for grabs in a liquidation sale. Someone has to own all of that, including the name. Other companies have been bought and sold: Danelectro, Kay, MXR, Kustom, etc. Someone could have picked up the pieces and kept something going.
formula73 Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 BCR GREG! Ain't you the insider here? Worth looking into?Puh - leeeeeeeeze?
atquinn Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 For anyone interested, Junior's Music in Clinton CT still has two in stockhttp://www.juniorsmusic.com/GMP/GMP.htm The Pawnshop is gone. At least that's what they told me when I checked on it last week.-Austin

Abaco Posted January 14, 2006 Posted January 14, 2006 I probably would have bought on if it hadn't been for the 25.5" scale length on every guitar. Yeah, I agree.Regarding headstocks. I've always liked the Dean Vs...until I look at the headstock..no thanks.
