Disturber Posted May 6, 2023 Posted May 6, 2023 Is a Les Paul 1970's pancake body considered to be inferior to a center seem glued to part body? If so, why?

By many, yes. 1 minute ago, Disturber said: If so, why? Because that's not the way it was done in 1959. I've owned dozens of Gibson LPs and the lone survivor is my Norlin era deluxe.

DaveH Posted May 6, 2023 Posted May 6, 2023 There are so many variables in guitar making... I'm convinced that you can find examples of awesomeness, and dogs, in any approach devised. Some variables may contribute more, or less than others one way or the other.
The Shark Posted May 6, 2023 Posted May 6, 2023 Pancake bodies are always heavier. Heavy is not good to some of us snobs. Remember, the body is pancaked and the top is laminated. Resonance is a key factor in a good sounding guitar, in my opinion. And they just don't ring acoustically as well.
BTMN Posted May 6, 2023 Posted May 6, 2023 I have never owned a Gibson with a pancake body but I have owned a couple Ibanez and an Electra they were from 1974 and 1976. Played and sounded like guitars to my untrained ears. Always had decent sound from them. Still own a ‘74 Electra LP and a ‘76 Ibanez LP.

The 3-piece neck is a feature for Hamer guitars, panned for Les Pauls. Mine is a 1973 and while I would get the traditional wood combination if I ever got another one, this one plays and sounds great, plus the mojo from being played 50 years. A 1959 was only 14 years old when I got my deluxe.

There are only two actual truths when it comes to Les Pauls: 1. LPs are the epitome of crapshoot guitars, regardless of era. 2. Pancake bodies are not always heavier.
hamerhead Posted May 6, 2023 Posted May 6, 2023 This 10+pound pig has been here for 44 years. Still my favorite.

Only one was under nine pounds. Customs too.
