MCChris Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 Gone way too soon at age 80. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/robbie-robertson-the-band-obituary-1234803234/
princeofdarkness56 Posted August 10, 2023 Posted August 10, 2023 Been fairly quiet of late for the IBS list. Then one big one goes and it’s off and running.
ARM OF HAMER Posted August 10, 2023 Posted August 10, 2023 He had a long, long, successful career for decades, more than most could ever hope for so................he lived a pretty good life IMHO. And........................ we are all going to die and there is no sequel. When Keith Richards dies then..................I'll be shocked. RIP Robbie!
Biz Prof Posted August 10, 2023 Posted August 10, 2023 It makes no difference. Levon passed a decade ago, and it's widely believed he was just as much the composer of their catalog as Robertson, no matter what the album credits reflected.
Willie G. Moseley Posted August 10, 2023 Posted August 10, 2023 My advocacy of the 'brown album' as the greatest record of American music in history (by four Canadians and a hick drummer from Arkansas) still stands, but Robertson wasn't without his share of controversy, if someone opted to pay attention. Rick Danko noted that after that second album, the band evolved into the Robbie Robertson Experience (my term, not Danko's), with the guitarist becoming the group spokesperson and hanging out with Scorsese (check out the non-musical segments of The Last Waltz) and movie stars (he was okay in Carny but the movie was still a clunker overall) Per Biz Prof (^^^, who checked in while I was typing this), the later brouhaha---and i don't know how legitimate or intense it was---questioned whether RR should have split royalties with Levon Helm, since a lot of Robertson's songs were allegedly based on or inspired by Helm's recollections. Robertson visited Helm a few days before Helm died so hopefully they made some kind of peace with each other. Favorite lyric by the Band was the succinct "The Flying Dutchman's on the reef." Robertson's words usually had a ****load of imagery. R,I,P,

G Man Posted August 10, 2023 Posted August 10, 2023 Between the Basement Tapes and Music From Big Pink, RR helped set the pace for what was to come in the world of Folk Rock/Americana, and for that I am grateful. I actually enjoyed some of his later solo albums as well, with Contact from the Underworld getting lots of play time in my house over the years. RIP Mr Robertson, rock on.
Jakeboy Posted August 10, 2023 Posted August 10, 2023 The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (among others) evokes such imagery and emotion. I believe it.
hamerican gigolo Posted August 10, 2023 Posted August 10, 2023 Great musician & one of my favorite songwriters. R.I.P. 😞
