Bridge for an EVH Franky inspired parts build?

Question

Posted

I've got a not exactly lightweight ash Strat body in my parts collection and thought it might be fun to turn it into a Franky *inspired* guitar, not interested in a handwringing fanboi replica.

Would obviously be set up to dive only so...Floyd? Gotoh? Hipshot? Babzik? Something else?

If you are setting it to deck against the body and drop only, the cheaper Asian-made Floyds are good enough. The Achilles heel of the Asian FR is softer alloys, meaning knife edges on the plate and the studs dull prematurely. But that only affects returning to perfect pitch when floating in my experience with them. I have three EVH Stripes with the decked-from-the-factory Asian Floyds and I have no problems keeping them in tune.

If you want a bridge you can float or deck however you wish, consider Gotoh 1996T (my personal fave) and Schaller Lockmeister (Jim V. turned me/us on to it, definitely the best of the Schaller stamped stuff) alongside the tried and true German-made Floyd.

Little known factoid:  @Jeff R's middle name is Floyd.

He wasn't named after trem but the barber on Green Acres.

From left ... first name Floyd, middle name NOT Floyd

Why would his first name and his middle name be Floyd?   That's just stupid.

I've got a couple Floyd's that were from 80s Kramers in the parts bin. Still curious about non locking bridges though.

My fave non-locking is Gotoh 510. Maybe a non-fine tuner Floyd pulled from an 80s Kramer Striker? Ed had a NFT Floyd for a while on Frankie.

Yes, but his name isn't William William Williams, is it?

I don’t know. I tried to look at the back of the card and my monitor fell off the desk.

WTF.. is that a chunk of Russian military hardware from the cold war?🤣

Close.  But closer to a piece of transcription hardware from the 1920s USA.

Not sure if you’d be interested at all, but I’ve got a new, unused Floyd RailTail that I don’t see myself getting on any one of my 10,000 projects any time soon.  It’s a really great unit and non-locking.

Those look nice,  but can't find a price 😕

Reverb

He sometimes posts complete trem systems. Check his, “sold’, section. He’s not very consistent in posting items. I’m sure if you messaged him through Reverb he’d be helpful.

Put a Bigsby on it! 😆
