What's this Hamer Relic worth?
cmatthes replied to Bruce's topic in For Sale - Wanted to Buy - PIF - eBay & Other PSAs
Dude. If somebody actually offered you $450 for that guitar, and assuming you have no moral issues with overcharging somebody for something, PLEASE do everybody a favor and jump on that deal. You will not see close to that kind of money for that guitar again in the foreseeable future. And finally, PLEASE stop saying that the pickups are the only difference between your guitar and the USA model. You couldn't be more wrong in that statement. The USA models are made from premium wood, hands-on in a small shop by some of the best luthiers in the biz. Your Korean guitar comes off of an assembly line from a factory that mass-produces guitars for close to a dozen other brands and is made of what is typically graded as firewood in this country. The people who slapped your guitar together are probably making cheap furniture today in that same factory. -

Bruce, no disrespect, but I've been closely monitoring, buying, selling, trading Hamer guitars for well over 25 years. I have significant knowledge about the new and used market for these guitars going back decades. Several people who have replied to this thread have similar (or even more) experience than me. When we're telling you you have a $150-$250 guitar, trust us - you have a $150-$250 guitar. Your guitar is not a sought-after collectible model, and even if it had solid 24k gold hardware made by monks on top of Everest on there, it's still a $150-$250 guitar. Sorry you've been misled. -

Hamer used Schaller tuners on the USA models during that period. Do your tuners say "Schaller" or "Made in Germany"? Are they Hamer Logo'ed? Is the tailpiece metric spec? Pull the bridge and look underneath it. Is it stamped with anything? The pickups are definitely NOT Seymour Duncans. Pull a pickup and tell me what it says on the brass plate underneath. I've seen and played those guitars. Yes, they're nice for import guitars, but you will simply not get close to what you are looking for out of that one. Cut your expectations by 50% and hope the planets are aligned that day. I 100% agree with Marc in the above post - Ebay is probably your best source for pricing intelligence, as that is the most accurate forecaster of the used market these days. Look to see what similar models have sold for, discounting the highest one and the lowest one. I underscore "Sold For", because most of those guitars simply do not sell - they're just not that desirable, honestly. By the way, when did you speak to Hamer about that guitar? Was this recently or when you were doing research on it in the early 90s? Just curious... -

Not to rain on your parade, but whoever led you to believe that this was of "collector value" or "on par with the USA models" was blatantly lying. First of all, there is absolutely NO comparison between the USA and Korean Slammer models from the early 90s production. None. NO FREAKIN' WAY. True, they are far nicer than most imports and certainly better than the Slammer series models out now (by a long shot!), but they are not even in the same ballpark. The parts are also NOT USA parts. That is a line of BS that somebody fed you along the way. Tuners are Asian Pings, bridges/tailpieces are at best, lower-end Gotoh (note that they are METRIC, not USA spec). Pickups are also inexpensive HBs (although decent for an import) and are not Real Seymour Duncans. They are Asian manufacture, loosely under Seymour Duncan design. I stress "LOOSELY" - not even close in quality, and probably less than $10 a pickup. I'm not sure what you are looking for in resale value for your guitar, but those are pretty plentiful in the $150-$250 range. "Slammer" Series is typically associated with the bottom-of-the-barrel models they've produced under that name since the late 90s. Yes, I know that yours is the earlier, better quality production, but although those are nice guitars for what they are, they have NEVER sold for $769. That was higher than LIST price back then for that series. If you're looking to make a killing on that one, the reality is you're probably better off enjoying and playing your guitar. Honestly, if you somehow actually paid north of $500 for that one, you'll definitely lose money selling it - even 10 years from now. I'm not trying to be harsh and not bashing your guitar, but it really sounds like you've been misinformed about a lot with your guitar. Hope some of this helps! -
New '79 Hamer Sunburst just arrived
cmatthes replied to petemfa51's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
That is one of the two guitars I never thought I'd see him sell. You caught him at a rare moment of weakness, perhaps? I have had the pleasure of playing that particular guitar, and have said before that that is one of the best Sunbursts I've ever played. Congrats! -
That guitar quivers in fear of being CHAINSAWED. Some minor trauma caused by the wallet chain is terribly insignificant. I'm sensing a "Chuck Norris" theme here...

Liz Phair does that with Material Issue (before Jim offed himself, obviously!). Matthew Sweet is on that CD, as are the Ramones and a few other favorites.

The First Tone That Made You Say... "Whoa!"
cmatthes replied to Hamerhack's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I remember being a kid and loving that crackling, AM radio breakup of Denny Laine's intro to "Band on the Run", by Wings. It made me feel all tingly. The next one was (oddly enough), the intro chords to "Love is Like Oxygen" by Sweet. Next was Brian May in "Rhapsody", but that was right around the time I started getting more into music and listening to guitar. I was into old KISS in 6th Grade, but probably couldn't pick out anything in particular there. I got into Cheap Trick right after that and the first guitarist I remember being floored by was Neil Geraldo. Right as I started playing guitar, Rick Witkowski's (Crack the Sky) tearing-up-the-speaker-cones tone was "IT "! That stuff still haunts me... -
The WHO, the Clash, The Hooters (was only marred by the yawnfest that was Santana) in Philly back in '82. Another great one was Cheap Trick opening for STP in '96 (or was it '97?). Wow.

I stopped reading Rolling Stone and cancelled a longtime subscription in the 80s. They had Don Johnson on the cover TWICE in a year. Don Johnson. Twice. I have only glanced at it once or twice since then. It had pretty much jumped the shark by that point.

Yeah, but if they don't, Henry or FMIC WILL !! Speaking of which, has Gibson released that Anna Nicole tribute Super 400 yet?

I did notice that and pointed it out to my wife, who replied with a thoughtful "Hmmmm".

Good drum kit for a guitar palyer
cmatthes replied to Craig S's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I've got a sweet Gretsch Catalina Birch set. Great kit for the money, and I bought a set, so you know they're cheapskate friendly! -
While I agree that Prince is far better than that, given the conditions, the network/FCC scrutiny (!!!) and the venue, I thought it was great that he didn't lip-synch some BS and actually PLAYED GUITAR. Was it his best night? Not by a longshot. Did I enjoy it? Absolutely. The fact that there was no Prefab boy or girl band or rap BS flash out there made it a good one for me.

That was a great little interlude. Covering the FOO?!!?! Grohl's gotta be on cloud 9. That was great.

The "instrument that started it all"
cmatthes replied to Willie G. Moseley's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Not super original, apparently, but Ace Frehley's 3 pickup LP. When I first opened up "Alive II" in 6th Grade, that one grabbed my attention. My first good guitar was a Cherry Sunburst LP Custom that I still have (it just looks a little different now...) Right after that, it was Rick N's Standards. And blue Greco Iceman. And Korina Flying Vee. (and so on, and so on...) -
Great bass!

That's a MAMMAL, not a fish...

Wow! Just like mine, but with EMGs and no p/g. I highly approve - you'll love it.

Already asked. Already a "no"! I think they want to preserve the integrity of the design before monkeying around with the formula. I'm anxiously waiting for one to turn up at my local dealer so I can take the afternoon off and check it out!
