I just know it has something to do with an ohm or some sort! -
So when you bias an amp just with a multimeter...
Jimbilly replied to Lockbody's question in Ask the HFC Experts
My amp tech alsoo tells me that the 1k resistor is the secret ingredient in my Allessandro Bias meter. He (my tech) built me a 9pin plug for EL84s with the 1K resistor built in, with 2 plugs on an output wire to plug right into my Fluke. Would it be easier in the long run just to build yourself an in-between octal plug with the resistor built in? Same tech built me a custom bass head, based on a Showman, it's got ports by each tube with 1k resistors in each that I can plug my Fluke probes into for really simple and easy bias checks. -
Recommend a steel string accoustic smaller than a dread

Peso's Elite is super cool. And like Alpep said, take a look at Takamine, I always really like those, plugged in or not. My '76 Takamine F307S (copy of a Martin 00-18) would be perfect, but it's not for sale, -sorry, but one of those should be in your price range as well, but hard to find. A Taylor Big-Baby would be great, those seem to be about $300 used, one of those should be really easy to find too. Yeah, for something you can easily track down, a used Taylor Big-baby should be just right. -

I can't really hate them, but their music doesn't ever really engage with me, maybe too emo-rock like said above? I will say that the line "teach me wrong from right" from one of their radio hits bugs me, I want it to be "teach me left from right".

New to the board, check out my rig :)

Welcome!, nice way to intoduce yourself! but wait, aren't new members required to first post something non-Hamer for sale (and overpriced) and only provide a link to ebay, or where the real ad is?, I'd better check the bylaws... -
My old bandleader had one, he swore that a Vintage30 did wonders for it, some good tubes helped too. If it were me I'd start with speaker and tubes and give it a good test before plugging in the soldering iron. Matt/tremolux gets regular gigging use out of his ProJr, he runs it through an Avatar 2x12. I've heard it, it sounds really good, I think he's got some better tubes in there too.

When I was pretty young I learned to not leave amps out of my possesion, I left my Ampeg VT-40 at a HS friends house for a couple of days. It wouldn't make a sound when I picked it up, I was aware enough to see that one of the 'small tubes' wasn't lighting up. I pulled that tube out and one pin was folded over at a 90 degree angle, -that couldn't be right. I straightened that pin out and the amp was fine, my friend didn't know anything about it, and was maybe a little too defensive. And because I didn't learn it 100%, I left the amp at a rehersal space basement in college, in a dry part of the state. An unusual rainstorm doused my amp with water, it's got a few stains on the speakers, and it's had a few service issues that may or may not be related, but 20 years later it's still going strong.

It's kind of like Groucho Marx's rule; I wouldn't lend a guitar to anyone who would borrow it from me ("I wouldn't belong to any club that would have me as a member"). I have loaned amps to a couple of other friends, but twice they fell in love and hounded me to sell them.

How much is a Chappie bass worth?
Jimbilly replied to Punkavenger's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Yeah, that's a fair price, you can't really expect to get a quality USA made bass for less (but people do still seem to find bargains). But I don't think you could flip it for much more, unless it cleans up really nice. -

Cool! I find that 'Virtuoso premium cleaner' is very good for making black black again, -just in case you're planning on blackening it up again. -

Yeah, short scale would be a bit unique, bring a measuring tape with you tomorrow. If it has boomers it would be a good buy at the tagged price, but it's high for a regular Chap4 in players cond. $300 to $350 is about right. An yes, they are good basses. Here's a pic of mine, a '94 I think. I also have a setneck 5, this 4 is a bolt-on. -
Awesome! -what do the two switches do?

!!! Jackson Soloist vs. Hamer Californian !!!
Jimbilly replied to Feynman's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I think it's mostly that Strats were virtually unchanged for a long time, and then somebody got the idea that a humbucker would be cool to have at the bridge, on and on it went. A super-strat has a basic Strat shape, but one or more changes, aimed at making it a better rock guitar, a hotter and/or humbucking bridge pickup would be a standard change. A Strat, but even more-better (super). (edited to add) I bought that Boogie Bodies used in June of '85 from a guy who had worked there, it had a single slanted Gibson humbucker at the bridge (I wish I could find that pickup now), it had been routed for a floyd but had/has a standard Fender trem, neck is Walnut. They had been using a lot of different premium woods well prior to that, my dad was in hardwoods sales/importing since the 60s, he remembers selling high end lumber to Mr Ellsworth (Boogie Bodies) prior to that time as well. -

<when you think super strat only one name should "ever " come to mind and thats the company that created the super strat> Charvel?, Boogie Bodies? -the new Premier Guitar has a very good history of the 'hot rod' guitar. I've got a very early Boogie Bodies that is reportedly from the same Ash plank as a very famous very early EVH guitar. I should restore it to full super-strat from the standard strat that it is right now. -
How do you fix a small hole in a speaker?
Jimbilly replied to Thundernotes's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I have had excellent results with RTV Silcone gasket sealer, I buy it from Napa auto parts. I repaired a couple of tears in the speakers in my Ampeg VT-40 when I bought it used in 1985, the repairs are still holding up perfectly. I like it because it stays flexible when dry, and it soaks into the paper nicely. I've repaired a number of speakers since then. That's the stuff IMO. -
I need to get a better pic of that Robin Made in Japan Ibanez SR885, the best bass in the $300 range. The Japanese Strat I got for $10 in a pawn shop, I need a truss rod nut for it, it may still be salvageable, but it was worth the $10 just for the Gotoh tuners. That's real human hair under the brush paintjob '78 Yamaha BB800, a very-very good P this '76 P cleaned up pretty good, and is also a very good bass, I've just had it a couple of weeks, I need a better photo!!

I do sound occasionally for some metal and screamo bands, these are high school kids, and several of the bands are quite good. Screamo is tough though, thank God for compressors, in this one band the kid tries to sing (with whats left of his voice) then goes to screamo, back and forth, -I try to get the singing up loud enough to be heard, then 'WHOAH' -bring the slider way down for the screamo. I also bring headphones so it looks like I'm really concentrating, but it's just so I can give my ears a break. I really do my best to get them to sound good, but the guitar players with the 5150 half stacks can't seem to understand that they can overpower the whole (relatively small) PA, as can the drummer (it's usually the bass player that has the small PV combo with a 15). Then their fan who stands up front square between the mains complains that she can't hear the vocals -I could go on and on...

I've been working late quite a bit, pandora.com and headphones is a good motivator, I've been listening to Lordi (Finland, Iceland?), which is mostly really pretty cool (especially tracks like Monsterman and Deadlite Girls), as is a lot of the other stuff that comes up on 'lordi radio', but the two I just can't stomach are Dragonforce, and Alestorm. DragonForce just gets way-way too fast and tight, 32nd notes just pounding and pounding, like a woodpecker stabbing at my head. Alestorm was intersting for about 2 minutes, 'pirate rock' is just not meant to be IMO.

What kind of vintage amp should I get?
Jimbilly replied to jwood's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Silverface Champ, get it slightly modded (I'll have to ask my tech for specifics), then get a decent 1x12 or 2x12 cabinet. Champs sound really good into a bigger cab, with the minor mods that beef up the bottom end they sound great. -

I've got a www.pandora.com station based on Slim Whitman that has played quite a few of the above names, pandora is always a good place to go and branch off from.
