  1. I'm pretty sure I first became aware of him when Sons of Apollo came out, but I didn't know who he was and stupidly conflated Ron Tahl with Kim Thayil (not knowing a thing about either of them and wondering why the Thayil dude had adopted such a stupid nickname...) [/confession of stupidity] That said, man, what a monster player and seems in the interview to be a really smart but personable guy. I have given the album a listen and found it to be strangely listenable - a feat for instrumental rock music in my book.
  2. The best recording of my favorite song: I've always considered the first four bars of this are about as good as it gets:
  3. Another metric I find helpful is to fret the string in question at the second fret, then press it (with the other hand) at the first fret. If the nut is the correct height there should be little to no movement in the string (or at least that's what I've both experienced and read).
  4. Fantastic tribute video. Shawn Lane died of Cushing's Syndrome, a result of persistent treatment of Psoriasis with Hydrocortisone. Can't imagine Jim Dandy et.al. were at all a positive influence on a young Shawn, but neither can I conceive of any plausible connection between BOA and Psoriasis. If you look at video from the BOA period and compare that Shawn Lane to the Shawn Lane of the 80's and 90's, you see the massive weight gain that was a side effect of the hydrocortisone. Very tragic all around. Don't know if anyone else picked up his solo album BITD, but I was greatly disappointed at how little guitar was on there. It was basically a piano / keyboard album. My guess was he was bored with guitar and maybe keys provided a more complete musical expression.
  5. Based only on what @ChugD has posted for sale, somebody needs to deploy Mark Agnesi!
  6. I was thinking, "at least she won't have to wait in line for the bathroom!"
  7. Virtuosic playing inspires me! The only time in 61 years I have been convinced I should absolutely quite was seeing Shawn Lane live with the Willys back in 1986. The fraternity hired them for a fundraiser. They only got to play three songs before the police shut the whole thing down, but in those three songs I was convinced he said all that ever needed to be said on guitar. I wasn't defeated at all - I was satisfied. Nothing more needed to be said. This was about how it went down and two of the three songs they did that night (and yes, 1986 VHS to digital leaves a lot to be desired): Watching that video it seems awfully meedly meedly, but being in the room standing right in front of him was different matter altogether. I do remember a night probably eight or so years earlier (I wasn't driving yet) my dad and his buddies going to the local AMVETS to see (what was left of) Black Oak Arkansas with 'some 15-year-old kid' virtuoso guitar player...
  8. Disagree: etc...
  9. Peart's stand-in:
  10. ETA: My favorite band, but I began to see cracks beginning as far back as R30. Ged said it himself, the keys used on Hemispheres, for example, never anticipated performance as a septuagenarian. Would love to go, but they're not coming anywhere near me. ETAA: I see your plant and raise you Rob Halford! THAT I would actually fly to see!
  11. Growing up a die hard "The Jetsons" fan, I had really hoped for more.
  12. This concept wreaks (no pun intended, but certainly accepted) of a quantum thought experiment. "A positively-charged turd is emitted while farting and then that turd emits a fart... I can know either its position or its spin, but not both..." 🧐
  13. How is it possible I can absolutely hear the accent in that gif? 🤣
  14. Love it! Is that a @UncleGreg finish?
  15. A couple of the neighbor boys got Les Pauls in the 70's (I, of course, kept my $49.99 Sears guitar because I was eventually going to quit guitar like everything else...). One opted for a tobacco sunburst (Like Ace) and the other, a white Custom. Don't know what ever happened to the tobacco burst, but the other guy still has his (now quite yellow) Custom (and some 50 years later I finally bought my own Standard!)
  16. Back in high school, the '55 Chevy was considered the ultimate mod platform. They were everywhere, relatively cheap and with a full frame and relatively large engine bay (especially with judicious application of a sledge hammer to the firewall to clear those brand new GM HEI ignitions), one could do pretty much anything with them. When they got expensive, the fox-body Mustangs were all the rage. With that in mind, I just ran across this at The Music Zoo on Reverb: Roasted Black Limba Body 25.5" Scale Length Compensated Brass Saddles T-Style Bridge 6 lbs, 8 oz. .880" Neck Thickness at 1st Fret 1.00" Neck Thickness at 12th Fret There are other configurations available with pricing varying around that of a better partscaster ($850 - $1,000). This looks pretty interesting as a mod platform, especially since it's lightweight and the neck is large enough I wouldn't have to change it out. Anyone played one or own one?
  17. As well as @currypowder
  18. Have heard Seth sing and IMO that is his greatest talent. I'm not really a fan of his humor. This should be great.
  19. Music Corner = Pawn1? Holy alter ego, Batman! It's no wonder dude hadn't looked under the pickguard.
  20. I had avoided Sabs as I avoided all of the "Satan as a Marketing Ploy" bands as they just creeped me out, but I ran into this in the Heavy Metal animated feature. I don't recall the specific scene, but it hit me with such intensity, music + visual, that I had to find out who it was. It continues to be a favorite and is on my Spotify workout playlist. Great for squatting (relatively) heavy!
  21. I was about to snatch this one up as I've always wanted a Prototype and this one, although pretty beat, is priced to reflect the condition. Hamer Protoype 1980s - Candy Apple Red | Reverb I was really ready to snatch it up, but when I asked what it looked like under the pickguard, I didn't get a satisfactory (to me) answer, only that his buyer was "very thorough with the instruments he acquired." If you're adventurous, likely a deal for you. It does purport to have the original pickups and that cream single is really cool.
  22. Amazing! And a 12-string to boot! Huge effort on your part getting signed up here and all!
