The problem seems ongoing. (See error message below) Cannot load pics as before- dragging and dropping nor choosing files, do NOT work. Even in edit mode, cannot do after the fact ...

BUT...

I've found that if you copy and paste existing (appropriately sized) files while constructing your text, it seems to work.

Here's what I have concluded: the WordPress environment does permit direct pasting of photos, but the file size is very limited. I was able to post (paste) a small screenshot directly and that worked fine. Trying to paste a large photo (don't know the definition of "large"*) directly does not work.

What does work is pasting from a photo hosting service like Imgur. I have had zero fails with multiple postings. If in Imgur, choose the Direct Link, paste it directly into the posting window and the board software resolves the link and displays the photo.

* "Large:" I was able to find this information on the WordPress limits:

Quote
Pasted photos in WordPress (using ctrl+v/cmd+v) are treated as media library uploads, generally limited by server-side PHP settings (commonly 2MB–500MB). WordPress automatically scales down images exceeding 2560px (width or height) to prevent performance issues. Optimal pasted images should be under 100-200 KB for best performance.
Key WordPress Image Limits & Behavior
  • Maximum Dimensions (Auto-Resize): WordPress 5.3+ automatically resizes images larger than 2560px to a maximum of 2560px to prevent memory issues.
  • File Size Limits: The maximum upload file size is usually determined by your hosting provider, often ranging from 2MB to 500MB.
  • Checking Limits: You can see your current limit in the Media Library under "Add New".
  • Default Generated Sizes: When a photo is pasted/uploaded, WordPress creates resized versions: Thumbnail (150x150), Medium (300x300), and Large (1024x1024).
  • Recommended Size: For faster loading, keeping images under 100–200 KB is recommended.

Hope this helps.

In conclusion, I think file hosting is the best means of getting there. I was reluctant to trust another hosting service after PhotoBucket absolutely destroyed the Internet ten or fifteen years ago, but so far Imgur has been fine.
