Did we really need to be told this?

I've recently taken a renewed interest in Queen. Been going through their catalog from about 1980 on to find the hidden hard rock gems. There are so many of them.

I've also been reading a lot about the band, and had read that he finished his doctorate. Quite impressive.

Get the Sheer Heart Attack album. Their heaviest by far.

Mike -- I stopped listening to them around '79. I've got all the early stuff. I picked up a CD called "Queen Rocks". I believe it was assembled by Brian May to show the harder side of the band. In my opinion, he was close, but off by quite a bit, lol.... I've located quite a few cuts that should have made the CD, that did not.

Actually... it should have been a double CD release. I'll email Brian, and let him know I've got disc 2, ready to go.

"Live Killers" is a great, underrated concert album. In college I was the entertainment editor for the school newspaper and we had a reference book filled with Rolling Stone record reviews. I'll never forget that every Queen album got one star out of five; maybe a couple got two stars. Jann Wenner's doing? Regardless, what a crock of shit.

"Ogre Battle" will crush your head.
Agreed... and for some reason, it is absent from "Queen Rocks"

Then I'm not interested.

"Ogre Battle" is very heavy, yes, but I guess "Queen Rocks" actually means "Queen Mainstream Rock Songs", so that's why "Ogre Battle" is absent.

By the way, Queen is my preferred band ever and Brian May is one my biggest inspirations. I even own all Brian May solo albums. All are good, but I think "Back to the Light" is amazing, as well as "Live At The Brixton Academy" -- if you don't have them, please check them out!

Damn...I knew he was a smart dude, but this is really cool.

Brian May is the smartest rock star ever

But is he smarter than Bob Clear?
Bob Clear? Do you mean 'ol Elwood "Bob" Clear? The infielder for the 1945 Batavia Clippers?!

No. I meant our very own AdmiralB.

LOL! The whole while I'm thinking, "I KNOW that name...WTF is it??"

I imagine you have to have some smarts to roll your own guitar and have it be not only functional but last for several decades, too. One of my all-time faves and responsible for one of those unforgettable concert experiences: Lights go down, crowd roars and then - a HUGE Brian May power chord that literally made my hair stand up! What a tone. Brialliance on many levels so it seems. Z

the version of "son & daughter" on the live BBC cd sounds like sabbath w/ mercury singing, unreal heaviness and tone. i took "rocks" and added 2 or 3 tunes from BBC to make my ultimate queen mix.

This thread jogged my mind about another concept that's appeared on this board before---that of the indispensable complete sides of albums, back when they were on licorice pizza or cassette. Side Two of ABBEY ROAD always gets cited (for good reason!) and I've always gone ga-ga over Side One of Quicksilver Messenger Service's HAPPY TRAILS.

Think I'll add Side One of QUEEN II to my own personal list.

I agree with you about Abbey Road (shocked, Beatles fanbois?), but I would have said side 2 for Queen II (or what is known as The Black Side).

I love that song. It's heavy as shit. I have all of Queens albums.

BTW, not only did Brian May get his Doctorate in Astrophysics from Imperial College, London recently; BUT he's ALSO being named Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University (they apparently have a well known astrophysics research institute). I heard for Queen Elizabeth II's Jubilee, he played guitar on top of Buckingham Palace! He gets around, doesn't he?
