B3 Sounds from a Guitar?

Is there a way to get this without a full-on guitar synth / hex pickup deal? This would be very useful in my 2 guitar band.

Not sure what you're going for, but I saw John Scofield a long time ago when he did a tour with Joe Lovano and when Lovano would take a solo, Sco would turn down, turn on a very warbly chorus and comp chords which had a distinct B3-ish flavor.

When I feel like dragging it to a gig, I use my Mesa Boogie Revolver cabinet powered by a Super head that was custom made. When I don't feel like dragging the extra gear with me, I use my Voodoo Labs Analog Chorus pedal with the knobs cranked all the way. There is no replacement for a real rotating speaker, but the Voodoo Labs pedal does a pretty good job.

One of the best "faux" B3 sounds that I have heard comes from Charlie Hunter. he uses the Hughes & Kettner Tube Rotosphere. Kind of pricey, but sounds pretty close to the real thing.

I was looking into the same thing today. One guy suggested this, although it's not cheap either.....

Electro Harmonix POG

It can get organ-like sounds........

Here's the demo:

The rotosphere is nice.

If you can live with the slight volume drop, the line6 mm4 is nice too.

There is the DLS rotosim too.

Remember to voice your chords like an organist to get convincing b3 sound. :)

I use the POG. It does just what you're looking for. I wonder if the MicroPOG does the same thing for less.

So the POG gets a pretty convincing keyboard / synth sound?

I think it does. Pretty huge sounding. I think if I added a rotary sound pedal after the POG, it would be even more scary good.

There are some Micro POG videos on youtube as well:

Based on those clips, the MicroPOG doesn't get the organ sound like the POG, but listen to the last clip when they cover the organ sounds. Not too bad.

I use the POG too. It does an AMAZING organ sound! I use mine with a leslie sim pedal and it works great.

The first time I used it with a band I had the keyboard player in a panic trying to figure out where the organ was coming from. It was great fun watching him... he even broke out a flashlight at one point to check out his cables and settings! :):)

It also does a good Metheny type synth lead sound that can be a lot of fun.

On the early Gov't Mule records, Warren used the (now discontinued) Korg G-4.

The last time I used it on a gig, an organ player tried to buy it off me during the set break- no lie.

Nowadays the Rotosphere is the bomb. Sounds the best by far, but might be too pricey and/or bulky.

Sco used an 80's Ibanez chorus (SC-10 I think) you can find 'em on ebay every now and again.

The Line 6 Roto-Machine is totally killer. Part of the ToneCore line.

Sounds great, small footprint, easy to find, and inexpensive

(I have one in the box I could let go if you're interested).

+10 on using different voicings and different approach for faux-organ stuff.

And I've found the results are coolest with minimal overdrive.

I think the best I've ever heard is the Multivox Little David. It looks like a miniature Leslie. I'm sure these are long discontinued but I have a friend that has one and it is incredible.

I am going to be the voice of dissent here. He said he wanted B3 tones, not Leslie tones or generic organ-like tones. Those POG sounds are really nice but nothing like a B3. The B3 has a distinctive tonality due to the tonewheels. If he wants a B3 sound he really needs to get a hex pickup and drive something like the Native Instruments B4.

If you take a look at Danny Gatton's first Hot Licks video, he got pretty respectable tones from his tele and just the tone knob, worth a look...

I finally got a POG. The organ sound will not really stand alone, but it will sound like there is an organ accompanying the band if you keep it low in the mix.

Now all I need is a bunch of guys who want to jam on some UFO tunes.

big +1 on a guitar synth, and voicing chords/parts like a keyboardist. i recorded this tune of mine w/ HHB's trio big block dodge, using a roland gr30 run thru a rotosphere (as well as a fretless guitar; any "B3" or "moog" keyboard sounds is me, as well as the "slide guitar" sounds; the burning regular guitar solo is HHB w/ a newport/mesa rig).
