murkat Posted June 23, 2011 Posted June 23, 2011 6V6's gives a nicer grunt than EL84's, when pushed. yes. this is it for me. not an el84 guy at all. and I like my tweeds
Hamer_SS_guy Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 I'd love a small Fender tube amp in the 60's look, preferably a reissue of the 80's Super Champ. That was a nice amp. I really love the Supersonic amps. Sometimes trannies can do wonderful sounds. I have a little cheesy Fender Sidekick 15 which produces a nice jazzy tone with a Gibson RD Artist (but doesn't sound great at all with all other guitars I have).
KH Guitar Freak Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Good amps. But I prefer my old Super Champ. 6V6's gives a nicer grunt than EL84's, when pushed. 6V6's gives a nicer grunt than EL84's, when pushed. yes. this is it for me. not an el84 guy at all. and I like my tweeds Why bother when you can have both? Buy yourselves a Mesa Boogie Blue Angel. Ok, I'm just being silly there... Anyway, slight detour...
Jakeboy Posted June 25, 2011 Posted June 25, 2011 When I saw him in a theater back in April, I was looking for the Jrs but didn't see any. He was plugged into what appeared to be a jtm45 4x12. One speaker on the cab was miked. Then again, JB sounds magical regardless of gear.
straightblues Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 I bought a mid 90's Pro Jr. in December. I had BillM mod it for me. He put in a new Heybor transformer. I had an old Fender Bassman cabinet sitting in the garage and I modified it to fit the Pro Jr. I now have a 4x10 Pro Jr. It is perfect for me. It sounds glorious. It is perfect volume for the smaller gigs I play. I can crank it up and I just play straight through the amp. The overdriven sounds are perfect for the traditonal blues I play. I have owned, and currently own, many vintage Fender amps. This stupid amp that I paid $175 for has become my main amp. I can't explain it, it just sounds amazing. Lots of other pros are using the Pro Jr as well. Guys like Warren Haynes and Derrick Trucks among others.
Caddie Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Just sayin that the Pro Jr that Beck uses, when you inspect "under the hood" it has very little similarity to the stock Pro Jrs that we buy. Just like teefus used to mod Blues Jrs and Analog Man mods Ibanez TS-9 pedals. You can't take a Toyota Camry off the showroom floor and compete in the Daytona 500. Just my $0.02. Cheers! caddie
hamerhead Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 You could if Chad Knaus was your crew chief. He's the Bill Belichick of NASCAR.
crunchee Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 What's the difference between a Pro Jr. and a current-model Pro Jr. III? Was there a Pro Jr. II? And do they all rattle? Inquiring minds want to know!

I gather that you two are referring to TRANSISTORS, and not TRANSFORMERS. When I think of "tranny", I think transformers, as all my amps are tube and I rarely if ever think about transistors. Car people think TRANSMISSIONS. Of course, somebody might find other meanings to "tranny", too.
Caddie Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 The one i had sounded like a tube micrphonics issue. But if i muted the fat E string it went away. I'm not much of a physicist so I would be guessing what that means. Remove the E string, it works for Keith Richard. Cheers! caddie ps-What did I do to get this double spacing between lines? How do I get rid of it?
sirDaniel Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 yah... JB asked me what I thought... I said no worries because I had great success gigging with an AC4...

The Shark Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 I'm not much for following Beck as a gear hound. Everything he uses sounds like him. I think that's the game. Every time I've watched him play, I drive home thinking about how much money I could sell all my shit for. Not even Michael Schenker makes me feel that way. When I watch the "dual" in the movie Crossroads, I picture Beck sending Vai to hell. I'm just sayin'...
LordsoftheJungle Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 So do the new Pro Jrs deliver as well or does it have to be one from the 90s?
Hamer_SS_guy Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Hmm, I really love to listen to Beck's albums BECK OLA, ROUGH AND READY, ORANGE, BBA, BLOW BY BLOW and WIRED. I could listen to them all day long. I think he defined his style over the years and he is technically better and more accurate than it was then. Yet, I think the old stuff was more interesting (and I think his band always was a big part of it). When it comes to his sound I didn't really like his sound. On Blow by Blow in particular the lead guitar sounds like he plugged the guitar directly into the mixing console. And in the mid-80's he seemed to use several Fender Twins which gave him a IMO horrible overdrive sound (I think he used a ProCo Rat then).
Caddie Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Jeez guys, if you buy a used Pro Jr for $175 or new for $300 then change the speaker, change all the tubes to some expensive NOS and change the xfmr to some expensive cork-sniffer xfmr what are you left with? A really, really expensive Fender ProJr. Yeah it may sound marginally better. But wow, did you just try to change a Corvair into a Corvette? Buy a professionally zooooped up ProJr clone. Unless you enjoy working on cars/amps in your garage/basement. That's cool too! Cheers! caddie
it's me HHB Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 I bought one from SirDan years ago, I thought it was killer and used it for tons of BBD gigs and on the CD as well, I'll try and find a tune that features it. I think they are fine right off the rack, not had any experience with the new models though

He is just too good..... except for Truth and Beck-OLA....those albums along with his Yardbirds work are my fave and they make me wanna play hard!
it's me HHB Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 this is a stock tweed Pro Jr with a RAT ( remained on ) and occasional Procatavio clicked on
hamerican gigolo Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 I've owned two in the past & sold them both because i'm an idiot! My last one was tweed with an Emi Copperhead. Great sound that i should have kept! Damned G.A.S.!!!
bubs_42 Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 Leaning hard toward getting a PRO JR. Damn sorry I missed out when GC blew out those Purple PJR's. PJR and a couple pedals is pretty much a grab and hit the road take anywhere setup. Just sold my Valve JR, at playing level for long enough period of time she started to give it up a little too much. I do wish the PJR came with 6v6's, one of the amps that has interested me for a long time but is not in the budget is the 65amps Lil Elvis.
