Steve Haynie Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Last night I saw Robert Plant and Band of Joy in Asheville, NC. The opening act was The North Mississippi All Stars. The ticket was expensive (what else is new?), but the show was in a great theater type of venue. No seats were too far away to see a good show. The North Mississippi All Stars were just a two piece-- guitar and drums. The bass player was not there. It was still an amazing show that they did. I had heard of these guys, but never heard them. Now I need to buy an album. They played 40 minutes. Robert Plant and Band of Joy came on at about 9:10. The band's set list has not popped up on the Internet yet, but it featured at least half of the new album. The band is the same group that recorded the album: Buddy Miller, Byron House, Marco Giovino, Darrell Scott, and Patty Griffin. One song was from the album Plant did with Alison Krauss, Please Read The Letter. There were some cool versions of Led Zeppelin tunes like Tangerine and Houses Of The Holy plus a few more. The show was over about 10:50. Buddy Miller was playing a lot of odd looking guitars that looked like old Kay and Univox type instruments-- cheap guitars. There were a couple of Danelectros used. Then Miller and Scott both had Gretsch guitars at different times during the show. Miller played through Swart amps with a tape echo unit sitting on top. Robert Plant came across as a nice guy, which he always has, but he reminded me of the way Paul Stanley acted when he did his solo tour-- no rock star on stage. There were songs sung by different band members with Plant standing at the back just doing backup vocals or playing harmonica. He never appeared to be the star of the show. The Band of Joy was the star, and Robert Plant was just one part of it. When the band took a bow at the end of the show (pre encore) some guy jumped on stage and joined the line while someone took pictures. Then he stepped up beside Plant... Plant just posed for a picture with the guy. Security was slow in getting out there on stage, and by the time anyone was out there the guy was back in the audience.
Bloozguy Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 They are coming here (Minneapolis) in April. Tickets are $55 to $95. Sounds like a cool show. If I can squeeze out some more money after the high buck Jeff Beck tickets I'll probably get some.
elduave Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Psyched to see them in DC. Those set lists are out there BTW, Steve. Thanks for the review. As I've always said, no one reinvents himself like Plant. The longer he's in the biz, the more I admire and respect him.
G Man Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Sounds like a great show. That's a little odd about NMA appearing without their bass player, although it sounds as though it was still good.
Citrus Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Buddy Miller is a big fan of Wandre guitarsSome really funky looking "art" guitars from the 60s - rare and can be expensive 5-10k???
BubbaVO Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 As I've always said, no one reinvents himself like Plant. The longer he's in the biz, the more I admire and respect him.Me too.
MCChris Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 I love that Soundstage set he did with Strange Arrangement that comes up on Palladia every now and again.
earachemyeye Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 I've got that Soundstage show saved. Those Zep tunes with 2 guitars were the sh*t even though they were strangely rearranged. I watched the Allison Krause gig too. Quite the mutation from the golden god of rock but he pulled it off flawlessly. I'm glad to see he's still at it and enjoying himself. I can't believe there's much money to be made. Is there?
Carl.B Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 They are coming here (Minneapolis) in April. Tickets are $55 to $95. Sounds like a cool show. If I can squeeze out some more money after the high buck Jeff Beck tickets I'll probably get some. Let me know what your wearing as I will be at the Jeff Beck show too. Would love to see Plant but we have dished out a few $$$ on concerts this year (Rush, Tool, Todd Rundgren,Linicnon Park, Beck).
geoff_hartwell Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Is Tangerine on the new CD? Was it significantly different than the original? Geoff (found some youtubes, thnx)
sirDaniel Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Roberts pic in Rolling Stone was pathetic... he looked like Marty Feldman
HamerHokie Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 I just read today that he had moved on from Alison Krauss to this new project. It seems he's been in a bunch of projects lately - The Strange Sensation, the Krauss collaboration, and now this.Band of Joy was also the name of his pre-Zep band with John Bonham.
cmatthes Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 EL:Steve McW was trying to sell his 2 tickets for $50 - for the pair. I'm sure you have yours, but that is a great deal.Tonight's the night! Plant in DC, sold out!
BlueRedWhite Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I hope they will come to Canada, i would really like to see them!I've seen in youtube a few videos and I think that Plant and Krauss are simply amazing I would LOVE to see Page playing..like in the "It's gonna get loud" video....
LefThanDed Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 (from the Raleigh News & Observer) Celebrity sightings: Robert Plant "He came in around 6:00 and there were only a few people in here," said Schoolkids employee Kyle Rosko, who took this picture. "One of them left but then came back in and said, 'I've gotta go shake his hand.' But nobody was really bothering them. In fact, a group of three teenagers came in and didn't recognize him." http://blogs.newsobserver.com/beat/celebri...gs-robert-plant
