Favorite Hot Paf?

I'm putting regular humbuckers back in my blue Studio. I got it with a Fralin 8k neck and that's going back, I wasn't a fan of the Fralin 9k in the bridge; too weak and thin. I've had and liked the Suhr SSV+ in the bridge of a couple Studios, so that's my fallback choice. Wanted to see what other people have liked in that position though. I hear a lot of good stuff about the Dimarzio 36th, but don't know it that would be hot enough for me.

When in the sam hell did you get that? Sweet Jesus thats hot!

Maple Top, Ebony Board... I go with RIO'S. The BBQ is big and badass.

I've had it for quite a while and I can't go with a BBQ because I have one in my Mirage II mapletop and I don't like having the same pickups in multiple guitars (I'm weird that way). Also the BBQ doesn't really have any qualities I'd call Paf-like. I just want something that's a bit beefier. The BBQ is, well the name says it all

I have an early 80's Duncan Custom that is awesome for a hot paf. One of the best I've tried. If you can locate an old one you can't go wrong. It's hot though. But sounds like a good paf should.

I actually have Custom in there now and it's awesome, but I was thinking about changing it into a Custom Custom and putting it into an incoming guitar. I was thinking of something a bit less ripping, but I might leave it in and get a new CC.

Wolfetone Marshallheads. PAF with more push. More power but the highs don't get squished and are still clear.

there's always the custom 5. Hotter than the Custom Custom, but not as hot as the Custom.

Anyway, that thing is a work of art. I love blue guitars.

Forgot all about Wolfetones. The Marshallhead does seem like it would fit the bill.

Okie Dokie. Travis sold me a Bro-Bucker and I have it in my 77 Sunburst. Its a fantastic "Hot Paf".

Dimarzio used to have a hot version of their standard PAF. The 36th Anniv. replaced the PAFs, don't know if there is hot version.

Thats pretty much it.

I would go Seymour Duncan, Custom or a Pearly, not sure if a JB would fall into that category.. An Alnico Pro 2 is nice, also

I just put a Distortion Neck in the bridge tonight. Definitely not a hot PAF, but less output than the Custom, a bit brighter, sounds better clean, but still has attitude. I'm liking it quite a bit.

WCR godwood bridge. Best pickup I've played (although I have yet to try the DiMarzio everyone is talking about). I prefer it to the Marshallhead, but only by a little, I like the Marshallhead a lot. The godwood bridge is 10.3K I think. It's not cheap, but it is worth it. Plus Jim Wagner is a good guy and easy to deal with. My 2 cents.

The 36th Anniversary didn't strike me as hot as the TX/BBQ. But they are very nice.

+ 1 on the Gregwinds - I should never have parted with those

The BG Buckers are what I have in my Mirage Maple Top. Those are pretty good in there too.

Then again, I'm kind of in a stop buying and just fookn practice/play mode nowadays. So I'm not really allowing myself the opportunity to even get remotely interested in trying something else. Except for maybe a GFS - VEH... But that's where I draw the line.

I don't have a lot of experience with humbuckers, but as I was reading the thread I immediately thought of the DiMarzio Slammer in the Phantom I had for a while. It had DC resistance of 10.5k, but still seemed to have the character of a good PAF.

LOL, that's kinda funny. I swapped out goodwoods for marshallheads in a DTM and decided to kept em in; won by a smidgin. Everyone's tonal taste is unique

Forgot to mention Manlius. He might have something for you as well. His pups are in addition fairly priced, even if they still are "boutique", USA-made pups. Have a look to this one, for example:

I have a Manlius on one of my Deans and it is a fabulous humbucker.

+1000 on Manlius. Call him, tell him what you want, his price is $85.00 for his stock pickups, but will make you whatever you want. for around $95-100.00 Micks stuff is on par with Bare Knuckles and WCR, I'ver had both and sold all my Bare Knuckles, WCR, and Motor City Pickups and all my guitars have Manlius stock and custom models.

(except my Stratt, which has EMG David Gilmour set)....

His modern vintage PAF+ looks very interesting. I actually bought a P90 from him a few years back and it was pretty nice, plus he's a good guy.

I got a set of custom wound FAT PAFS from Bulldog pickups here in the UK. Hayden used to wind pickups for Bareknuckle and worked at Matamp. Now he makes his own.

Me, I wanted a bridge pickup with a more rounded response and less treble, which he delivered using an Alnico 2 based design. Wonderfully rounded sound but still very articulate with enough bite. The (close to)standard FAT PAF neck which it came paired with is also gorgeous. Real nice pups, they went into my Artist and replaced the Seth Lovers. The Seth neck pup migrated to my Korean Slammer, paired with a Phat Cat at the bridge. Mmmmm.

Not sure if it's worth it if you're in the USA, but Hayden was good to deal with. Food for thought.
