singlehum Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 I just bought a used guitar that smells of cigarette smoke. It's not overpowering but it is there. What's the best way to remove the smell from the guitar and the case? Thanks
kenjones Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 http://www.hamerfanclub.com/forums/topic/49560-deodorizing-a-guitar/page__hl__cigaretteHere's my reply from that previous thread:The guitar: leave the guitar out of the case for a few weeks. Clean the guitar. Naptha works great. Use polish (I like McGuir's Car Polish paste) to buff back to a shine. The case: Vacuum out the case thoroughly with a brush attachment. Spray the fuzzy interior with FebrezeĀ®. Don't soak it, but don't use too little. Leave the case open in your back yard sitting in the sun during the day. Supposedly the sun helps to break down the odor. Bring the case in at night and put 3-4 new dryer sheets in the case. Repeat this for 3-4 days.
Victor (Fret Friend) Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 Leave in the sun? Best hope he's not in England then!
m chops Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 Put in the case with a dryer sheet for a couple of day.
Studio Custom Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 Fire restoration guys use ionizers, maybe you can rent one for a few days.
veatch Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 Someone here recommended this when i asked the same Q a while back for the case. Worked well, especially combined with the sunlight thingy... Available at most auto parts stores.
kizanski Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 Start smoking. It will deminish your sense of smell.
Bobby Marshall Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 Put in the case with a dryer sheet for a couple of day.^^^ this!!!!It works . . . but then it smells like clean laundry. Seriously, I am NOT kidding. My 4 digit smells like Bounce, but I would rather that smell than the Marlboro smell.I just leave them in the case all the time.
hamerhead Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 Start smoking. It will deminish your sense of smell. There's your answer right there.Or let the cat pee in it.
Steve Haynie Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 Hmmm... I was thinking about posting that if you let a cat pee on your case the smoke smell would not be so bad. Oh, crap... group think.
hamerhead Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 Oh, crap... group think.Jeezus.......(shakes head).......we're in trouble.......

Victor (Fret Friend) Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 Just to be safe, I recommend mixing all the ingredients in the link above & chucking 'em all in. Can't fail...
Toadroller Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 I put charcoal briquets in a case. They eat up the smell. Don't use the match-light ones, though

The most odor-free kitty litter also uses charcoal.

Thanks to Toadroller's suggestion last July (in my "New Old Pickup Day" thread), my pickup no longer has any smoke smell. Pickup + charcoal briquettes in a small box in the garage for a month = absolutely no smoke smell. Thanks Toadroller!
kizanski Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 So, we're not going with the smoking or the cat piss recommendations?
kenjones Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 Wouldn't using charcoal make everything smell like burgers?
hamerhead Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 So, we're not going with the smoking or the cat piss recommendations?Quitters.
Toadroller Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 Oh yeah...aren't those foot odor things made with charcoal?Funny how they're called "Odor Eaters," eh? Speaking of which, I need to shove some charcoal into my fifteen year old's shoes. Nasty!

Speaking of which, I need to shove some charcoal into my fifteen year old's shoes. Nasty!Off topic, but try bamboo socks (seriously). Costco used to have a large multi-pack (10 or 11) of white bamboo socks for $20. No smelly feet after getting them.
hamerhead Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 But what size bamboo sock do you need to fit a guitar in it?
mc2 Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Cut a raw apple in half and put it in the case for a couple of days....absobs the smell.
