What's the Hamer of Phasers?

Question

In my Brian May style rig I'm still missing out an analog phaser. The original fOXX phaser might be hard to get. So, I'm looking out for one that would fit the bill and tone.

Searching German Ebay, I came across the MOOER Ninety Orange, shipped from Hong Kong. It's small, all analog and sounds nice.

What would you recommend?

I am a big fan of the old MIJ Boss PH-2 Super Phaser. Sounds good, very versatile, affordable and readily available. The only drag is that it uses the Boss ACA power adaptor, not the PSA, so it can be a little freaky (aka noisy) with some power bricks if the voltage doesn't match properly. I just stuck with using a 9V battery in it.

I gave my very clean May '85 example to murkat Jay a few weeks ago in thanks for his recent hospitality and guitar doctoring - maybe he can pipe in on it too. I recall his initial test-drive on it evoked smiles :)

The script version of the recent MXR Phase 90 sounds good - a lot like the old ones (to these old ears).

Witty graphics!

I have one box for wiggle in all its forms: the TC Nova Modulator. Kind of overkill if you're just looking for a phaser, however.

Herr Gorch,

I think any of the mid-line phasors will do the trick. I've used original/reissue MXR scripts, EVH, RetroSonic, Whirlwind, EH Smallstone and they all have their own merits. For classic 70's phase I like the Whirlwind, for softer/more refined, the RetroSonic. The EH Smallstone can be made to sound more filthy than most, which might be what you're after?

The re-issue FOXX pedal is OTT spendy (on the tails of B. May, et al.), but I'm betting it sounds bitchen. For $329, meh, I'd wait for a used one...

Beam me up Scotty! This is exactly I was looking for.

Thanks for your recommendations. I'm definitely going for an analog circuit to keep the waves fluid. The experiences with the DD-6 in an analog channel tells me to go that way.

I don't think it requires the original to receive a great sound. Since having the Doxy pedal that mimics the Deacy amp sound quite well into various guitar amps, I think an 80% solution for far less money would keep the signature intact...and make me hobbyist happy.

The old Boss pedals that need the ACA (12 volt DC unregulated )can be modded to run on the regular 9 VDC PSA supply. I had to track down a 12VDC power supply for my old Boss BF-1 Flanger for it to work correctly as the PSA wasn't doing the trick.

The old Boss phasors are awesome once they get the juice they need.

Correct. FWIW - my old Boss pedals run fine with a standard 9v power supply as long as the pedals are daisy chained and not isolated.

The Retro-Sonic Phaser is based on the classic 4 stage Script Logo Phase 90 circuit with a few additions for a more versatile pedal, most importantly for me, True Bypass, no tone sucking when off. Along with the Rate, the Retro-Sonic Phaser has a Depth control which allows you to dial in the intensity of the effect, as well as a level control to match unity gain, or even provide a little boost if desired. And a matched set of FETs for the best possible phasing experience.

I've had a lot of people tell me the Red Witch - Moon Phaser is fantastic, but I've never played one.

I had a Red Witch (love hearing Ben Fulton say "Reed Wheech") Moon Phaser for a while - it may have been the most beautiful, lush effect I've ever put between a guitar and amp. There were times, however, when I needed less effect and it just didn't have that option. If it had had a depth control there would have been no way I would have sold it.

I still have one of these i bought new way back then.

I plug it in and it sounds great but these days everything I do is in the computer so I rarely use it.

Interested to hear your thoughts on this. I've been looking at that one and their Reecho delay with great curiosity since seeing them on the Bassstringsonline.com web site.

Used to be a bigtime Phaser Phanatic.

Soncially, my fave is an old Morley Phaser-Volume pedal. It's honking big, with a dedicated cord to boot tho.

As for usage, like the Maxon Rotary Phaser PH-350. It can do a lot.

Have always wanted to give the retrosonic unit a whirl (pun intended).

The MOOER came in by the weekend. Simple saying: I love it. Soundwise it fits nicely into the BHM Deacy tone rig I had set up last year. Doesn't alter the tone except for what it states will do.

It arrived perfectly packaged. The sound is far greater than you'd expect from the form factor. It's a neat little thing delivering great tone. The Youtube videos describe it just right.
