bubs_42 Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I'm just having a go at you guys anyway. If I want Chickenhead knobs I will put them on post purchase anyway. None of y'all wanna copy my bad style anyways. Correct.
serial Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 If the tops are like the original four digits and Standards until 1998 or so, they're essentially all mahogany anyway.Veneer over chambering? The veneer on my old Special appeared too delicate to cover chambers. I'd envisioned the chambering would require a thicker top. I believe the tops over chambered bodies are, most likely, thicker than 4-Digit tops. I have one...It has original GregWinds now. Tops on chambered Hamers were (because they weren't chambered until after Hamer stopped using veneer) were a thicker milled-down top, but there's no reason that veneers won't work on a chambered body if done correctly.
RichRS6 Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I was hoping Mike wouldn't mind mine being un-chambered with a thin veneer just like the old 4 digits (or no veneer at all as it's hopefully going to be a solid colour anyway.I don't have anything chambered to play to decide if it's a good thing or not ((I don't really mind about the extra weight) and I like the sound of my non chambered Standards a lot.I await his word on this (no pressure) and am looking forward to seeing the first ones then I can think harder.Might just go with the flow and save the non Ultimate spec for a custom order later.
serial Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 I'm not saying that Mike will be using veneered tops, but it could be (and surely has been) done over chambered bodies. I had the same concerns initially before talking to Mike. That being said, I'm sure he'll get the good stuff!
JohnnyB Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Not a fan of the chicken head knobs here either. They look great on amps!... and chickens.
BTMN Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 BA DOOMPA TSSSS!!!! Ordered some more Chickenhead knobs just a little while ago in Gold like these.
cmatthes Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Everything is going to be just fine with a chambered body and the maple top/cap thickness Mike is going to use. It won't be too far off of a very familiar spec (in fact, possibly even more robust), and will be plenty adequate to manage any body chambering. Got that straight from the man himself, so all is right in the world again!
The Shark Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 BA DOOMPA TSSSS!!!! Ordered some more Chickenhead knobs just a little while ago in Gold like these. If you ever get over to Orlando, go to Skycraft. It's a surplus store and they have chicken-heads in black, white and creme by the thousands! Good prices too.
soli'd Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Ha! I remember Skycraft... I used to raid that place for weird parts, switches, pilot lamps, (and of course knobs) etc... back when I was at Full Sail for recording arts.

He worked at Full Sail back when they first opened.
BTMN Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 There is an amp guy here in St. Pete that has them about 10 different ways and Allparts has the Gold one $2.50 a pair.
Hamer Dave Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 BA DOOMPA TSSSS!!!! Ordered some more Chickenhead knobs just a little while ago in Gold like these. If you ever get over to Orlando, go to Skycraft. It's a surplus store and they have chicken-heads in black, white and creme by the thousands! Good prices too. Is Skycraft near Disney World?
Hamer Dave Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 Hey, would a 1995 Standard be chambered? It doesn't feel uncomfortably heavy at all. Wondering?
cmatthes Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 No. I had a 1990 and a '95 that were featherweights. They didn't chamber until a decade later.
Hamer Dave Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 Thanks for answering my question on chambering. ^^ You think Mike may be able to use an old school classic truss rod cover? Those later ones bug me. Or is it a copyright issue? Would be sweet if he personalized them like Hamer would do back in the day.
RichRS6 Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 + 1.The "new style" TRC's bug me too and I have requested an "old style" one like the 4 digits had.Does anyone know why they changed to the less attractive type ?FWIW You can get the engraving done at any key cutting place.
mirrorimij Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 + 1.Does anyone know why they changed to the less attractive type ?I think it had something to do with an agreement or settlement with Gibson. Hamer was still using the familiar bell shape TRC when I started there in the early 90's. The scroll on the headstock changed slightly at the same time as the TRC change. That last Standard that Jackass assembled on "black tuesday" used a Gibson shaped rod cover that was supplied by the customer. I would ask Mike if that is an option.
RichRS6 Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 Thanks.I guessed It had to be a legal issue, the old ones look so much better.I'll discuss it with Mike when the time comes.

Skycraft is about twenty minutes from Disney. It's on the northeast side of town. About a quarter of a mile off Interstate 4. Real easy to find.
The Shark Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 I'm for the vintage bell cover too. I've also contacted Mike about using vintage style aged single-ring Klusons.
cmatthes Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 I thought that the TRC change was more about not aping Gibson and more forging a different identity for the brand. They changed to the "suppository" TRC in the mid '80s, and went through several changes in the 90s before settling on the one the ended up with at the end. I'm sure Frank U. Or Jol could answer that for sure.
RichRS6 Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 I don't think that shape TRC has been used on any Gibson copies since the 80's so it might have been a legal issue, perhaps changing that was enough to get Gibson's lawyers off Hamer's back.

I used to raid that place for weird parts, switches, pilot lamps, (and of course knobs) etc... back when I was at Full Sail for recording arts.Did you know Bruce Marshall? He worked at Full Sail back when they first opened. That name sounds familiar but I can't picture him. The most memorable instructor I had there was a guy named Hunter Menning. Unbelievable wealth of knowledge. I started there in 2001, FS was a much smaller operation then, but they had amazing equipment to learn on (Amek 9098, SSL 9000J, incredible mic lockers and outboard gear). We once had Roger Nichols as a guest instructor. Fond memories of that time in my life.
mirrorimij Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 Would these truss rod covers used on the early 90's Specials be considered the "bell" style normally associated with Gibson?
