Zakk is in the Left Footers Club!

When BLS toured with Judas Priest three years ago, the BLS meet and greet was in the foyer area of the stadium. You could see everyone through the glass walls. Somehow, one must wear a black vest or jacket with a large BLS back patch and a lot of studs to be an authentic fan. It was like the entire group of fans were in their rock and roll uniforms specifically tied to just one band. Sure, an audience often wears black at rock concerts, but not necessarily to match the band that is playing.

It is cool that there are dedicated fans like that. It would be nice to be selling them the stuff. The real beauty is that all the T-shirts are black with white printing, the cheapest possible shirt printing, and they sell for as much as the full color or multi-color printed shirts.

Years and years ago, a buddy of mine pretty much had the job as BLS's FOH engineer, but it was contingent on his wearing all that fake biker gear. My friend takes pride and being a pro and said politely that he only works in collared shirts and slacks. BLS really wanted him, but neither party would budge on the outfit thing. Ultimately, Zakk's wife said they would have to go a different way because they wanted a "cohesive look."

I thought my friend might just be pulling my leg for years until I met someone else that played in BLS a couple of years later. He had moved to my home town, and we wound up members of the same gym. I never told this guy my friend's story, but he had plenty of his own that sounded exactly the same.

These episodes pretty much ruined Zakk for me. I respect the fact that he found a niche and turned it into a career in one sense, but my artistic side never could get passed it all being essentially a circus act. I guess I knew that at a level from the beginning, but there is a difference between suspending a gut feeling and ignoring repeated data.

Great story!

To me all that BS has always being clear, but I do regret that too many metal fans take themselves so seriously that they become as open-minded as a bunch of flies. They say they are anti-conformists and anti-cliché rebels, but they conform to every chug-chug-chug cliché and wear black to look all the same. Ha!

That's why I'll wear fucking pink in October, when I'll go see King Diamond. True metal forever!

Angus uses is a prop or a gag and was Scott Ian ever relevant?

Said shorts prop has been goin' strong for 40 years. Hell of a prop.

Relevance depends on whether you were a Anthrax/thrash fan. :P

ETA- Dime wore 'em all the time. Steve Harris has worn 'em. Mike McCready from Pearl Jam wore 'em, Clapton wore 'em and BB King even wore 'em once. The "no shorts rule" is poppycock, especially if it's 98 degrees and 70% humidity...

Mike C. was part of the "Alternative Revolution", Clapton (Not in his prime) and BB King ( Who wants to see that? ) ;)

98 and 70% that's a walk in the park for the Midwest.

Ah, I see. And what musical revolution were/are you part of? ;)

See, that's why I'm calling bunk on that whole No Shorts Rule -- my guess is 98% of the folks decrying it are nowhere NEAR the talent and success level of any of the players I mentioned that do wear shorts. Sure. Doesn't mean they can't have an opinion on it. But does wearing shorts somehow diminish that players prowess? I think not. Moreover, I've heard grumblings on here and elsewhere that to plunk down good money to go see a band and find one or more of the players dressed inappropriately, in shorts, is such an affront or rip off. Fine. Don't go see the band. Problem solved.

Anyway, I've done my part to derail and beat an already dead subject thoroughly. Back to Zakk's full throttle guitar assault. Loved his playing w/ Ozz but he was exhibiting less than adequate nuance, ebb and flow for that particular tune. IMO. And in long pants no less :o:P:lol:

You can`t rock out when your balls are hanging out the leg hole of your baggy cargo shorts as you hit middle age. And lord knows there`s nothing riding lower on a middle aged guitar player than his ballsack - not even his Les Paul.

Better have some longballs as most Camo shorts are below the knee length.:o:P

and BB King ( Who wants to see that? ) ;)

It was in his younger years and IMO he rocked the look!

Great hosiery and two-tone shoes! Dude's got style! Slingin' the first-gen ES-5, too!

And who the hell is playing that Park head? Can't remember the last time I saw a Park onstage. Cool.

Last time I saw an honest-to-goodness Park on stage was the Georgia Satellites in 1987 or '88. They had HiWatt, Marshall and Park heads sitting on single 4X12 cabs. Several of the heads had had the carrying handles replaced with bull horns for easy load-in / load-out.

The guy sitting on the stage is like, "Look how dumb he looks in those shorts."

Shorts on stage, guilty M'lud, (but society is to blame).

Socks and sandals never at any time or place for any colour creed or race, this abomination should be punishable by lethal injection.

B.B. gets a pass as Angus obviously got the idea from him so he was the one that pushed that envelope.

The only thing the guy sitting on stage (in front of that, what, Super?) is likely thinking is, "WHAAAT?"

Probably had the same response to any question posed him for the next couple of days...

If it is an important aspect for a band, the members should identify their "look", perhaps set some parameters. Shorts could be part of the shtick. Not cool for my current band so when our bassist showed up to a gig in shorts (looking like he was ready to do some Saturday shopping at Target rather than play an important show), we talked about it...

Did you let him on stage looking like that or was the discussion a post-mortem?

One of my biggest regrets in music being partially responsible for what's clearly wrong in this video:

I was addressing coolfeel's situation, and am curious how he handled it. What do you do when a band member shows up looking totally inappropriate for the gig? Send him home to change? Cancel the gig? Do the gig and discuss it afterward?

That would be a tough situation. For you guys in large cities it is likely a different deal that we in the sticks as travel back home likely isn't an option. I (for the little while I was actually gigging) always carried a couple of options and tried to conform to what the much younger lead singer was wearing. He continued to dress more nicely as time went by, so it was never a problem. The only time we wore shorts was an an outdoor gig at a youth camp - it was July, in the middle of the woods and was what everyone else was wearing.

You couldn't really cancel a gig because somebody showed up dressed as above, could you? I suppose the guy who booked the gig could cancel it (or refuse to ever hire the band again). Maybe you could send him to a store for a pair of slacks, a white shirt and a tie?

If there were no options to change prior, would you even bring it up before the gig? That would be some serious tension to play through...

Hahaha yes, meant to comment on that. I'm hoping we can all agree that the guitar is fucking hideous.

It could be worse, it could be Natural Korina with Gold Hardware and Chicken Knobs.
