zorrow Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Well, Zakk is playing there his role of a berserker rocker, as always. This includes overplaying with berserker guitar chops and berserker over-compressed tone, no matter the song. That's him and that's what has made him successful after all. I don't really like his stuff that much, but I do applaud his intelligence to create an image and a style for himself, and then build his career on top of all that. As I said once, he reached to the top of the guitar hero pile without tapping, without whammy bar, without sweeping and during the grunge and nu-metal years. Hats off to him just for that, no BS!

Mike McCready from Pearl Jam wore 'em, Clapton wore 'em and BB King even wore 'em once. The "no shorts rule" is poppycock, especially if it's 98 degrees and 70% humidity...

See, that's why I'm calling bunk on that whole No Shorts Rule -- my guess is 98% of the folks decrying it are nowhere NEAR the talent and success level of any of the players I mentioned that do wear shorts. Sure. Doesn't mean they can't have an opinion on it. But does wearing shorts somehow diminish that players prowess? I think not. Moreover, I've heard grumblings on here and elsewhere that to plunk down good money to go see a band and find one or more of the players dressed inappropriately, in shorts, is such an affront or rip off. Fine. Don't go see the band. Problem solved. Anyway, I've done my part to derail and beat an already dead subject thoroughly. Back to Zakk's full throttle guitar assault. Loved his playing w/ Ozz but he was exhibiting less than adequate nuance, ebb and flow for that particular tune. IMO. And in long pants no less

Yeah, I know, that's his thing. Zorrow explained it well. I just find it infinitely less interesting than fast runs executed by just about any other A-list guitarist.Wished Brad's solo had a bit more volume on it. Sounded nice based on what I could hear.And who the hell is playing that Park head? Can't remember the last time I saw a Park onstage. Cool.

LucSulla Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Years and years ago, a buddy of mine pretty much had the job as BLS's FOH engineer, but it was contingent on his wearing all that fake biker gear. My friend takes pride and being a pro and said politely that he only works in collared shirts and slacks. BLS really wanted him, but neither party would budge on the outfit thing. Ultimately, Zakk's wife said they would have to go a different way because they wanted a "cohesive look." I thought my friend might just be pulling my leg for years until I met someone else that played in BLS a couple of years later. He had moved to my home town, and we wound up members of the same gym. I never told this guy my friend's story, but he had plenty of his own that sounded exactly the same.These episodes pretty much ruined Zakk for me. I respect the fact that he found a niche and turned it into a career in one sense, but my artistic side never could get passed it all being essentially a circus act. I guess I knew that at a level from the beginning, but there is a difference between suspending a gut feeling and ignoring repeated data.
