santellavision Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 SOLD!!!‘98 Robin Ranger Revival Strat in Rare, Sea Foam Green with a crazy cool Flame maple neck. Does it get any cooler than this color!! Rosewood Board (Brazilian? Looks like it definitely might be) Near-mint condition. Very light play wear, frets look brand-new, I barely played it and only in my non-smoking home. (You have to check, I recently bought a guitar that freakin’ reeked of smoke, so now I always ask!) There is some slight discoloring on the Pearl pickguard (see close-up pic) Nothing too bad. And if you were wondering, that's not a ding on the neck, just a mineral streak. Thin, resonant Nitro Lacquer finish. Great sounding Rio Grande Pickups.I’m the 2nd owner, but she looks to be 100% original. I have all my guitars Plek’d and setup by Joe Glaser in Nashville. This was also done. So, she plays like butta’ with low action and great tone. Comes in a TKL Hardshell case. Not sure if the case is Original or not, but it fits perfectly. Robin’s are getting harder and harder to find. Nice weight at 7lbs 9oz. SOLD!
LordsoftheJungle Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Nice! I always loved the Ranger neck carves too,,,
The Shark Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Sold this one to Ernie. Great looks, great feel, great player and great tone. There won't be any more. Great seller.
SSII x 2 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Man, the flame maple neck is out of this world! The Plek treatment alone should beworth a couple hundred bucks. GLWtS...
santellavision Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 Yes, the Plek and setup was a couple hundred with shipping to/from Nashville.I was just looking and a brand-new, piece of crap Fender Deluxe Strat is $1,700!!!You could have this hand-built work of art for less. No brainer.
Ting Ho Dung Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 Okay, some tire kickin' Q's. Do you know the fretboard radius? Neck carve? Nitro? ThankyETA: One more, do Fender pickguards fit this?
santellavision Posted March 12, 2015 Author Posted March 12, 2015 Nitro finish, I don't have a way to measure the neck radius, but it feels like about 10", definitely not a vintage Fender radius. The Neck carve is comfortable Medium C. Feels really nice. And no, the PG holes are not the same as a Fender (That's a tough one as there are so many different Fender hole designs). If you want to change the Pickguard, you could always just get one made. I've used these guys and they do a great job and cheap.http://pickguards.us/pgordinst.htm
geowolves Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 Price Drop... $1,250. Shipped/PPGShocked this one still hasn't found a new owner yet. I wish I could but I can't I just can't! Too many recent purchases. GLWS.
santellavision Posted April 18, 2015 Author Posted April 18, 2015 OK, need help here. Can I get some input why this amazing guitar hasn't sold? Is it just because it's a Robin and not a Fender? This is a hand-made Work-of-art from a master builder. Everything about this guitar is killer, beautiful wood, impeccable assembly, great-sounding Rio Grande Pickups. Cool color. A boring mass-produced Fender Deluxe Strat is $1,700 street, even current, really crappy Strats are $1,200. What am I missing? Thanks for you input.Ernie
Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 Tax season? Bad jobs report?I've noticed a dichotomy in sales, too, where things either go for more than I expected to a determined buyer, or far less than it should be based on quality, ebay history, etc.
ptm1diver Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 One reason is name brand recognition. I never heard of Robin till I joined this group. Also, if someone buys and does not bond with it, they may feel they would not be able to sell it and get their money back. Sorry, it looks nice.
Ting Ho Dung Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 I really liked the looks of that guitar. I've never played a robin so feared I wouldn't bond with it. I don't try to make money on guitars but I hate losing it if I have to sell or want to sell. Taking a bath on the Murkat Bengal has me looking at things a little differently than I did. But I can say I was very tempted on this one. But regardless, I don't have the money so couldn't give it proper consideration.
tommy p Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 For me, it's totally fear of resale value (or lack thereof) if I couldn't bond with it. I love it, and almost owned it before you but as I recall I thought I might be able to haggle it to a 3-digit price back then. Probably couldn't have.
mrjamiam Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 For me, it's totally fear of resale value (or lack thereof) if I couldn't bond with it.Ditto. Checked as much as I could on the old interwebs, mainly completed sales info, and just couldn't bring myself to take the plunge, considering what the likely story would be if I had to move it along. Also, checking the old interwebs confirmed that there is wide agreement that they are great instruments.
santellavision Posted April 19, 2015 Author Posted April 19, 2015 Thanks you guys for the feedback. I know, we've all been burned on 'odd' Boutique guitars and especially amps.Would it help if I offer a 48hr return (less shipping) if you don't bond with it? (Not likely, its a great axe)Thanks,Ernie
cynic Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 I've loved the look of MANY Robins, but my understanding is the typical neck carve is quite large, so I usually pass over them without a seconds thought.I don't think your price is horrible, but I didn't have the feeling before the last half-dozen posters here that Robin was considered an unknown brand. As deep in the weeds as many get with the boutique brands these days, Robin was practically mainstream.
ARM OF HAMER Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 Robin made some incredible guitars and this one is no exception................if I was in the market for a Fender Stratocaster............I'd buy this............honestly I would! Its far better as far as build quality thats for sure. Fender like Gibson is more interested in how many can they make and sell than how many can they make well...............hey that rhymes! Seriously though this is one cool guitar and in a great color,I can't find anything not to like about it. As far as selling goes I'm sure many people have just got done paying the "TAX MAN",I know that to be true of more than a few of my friends. I don't think your too off the mark as far as price................does the name on the headstock give some people pause for buying it? yeah it does somewhat unless you know these guitars and how good they are..............Fender is not the only game in town. Hang in there the "RIGHT" buyer is out there.
Punkavenger Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 Bonding is a weird thing .... I didn't bond with my mint condition Daytona but love my run of the mill strat with swimming pool route. The slightly larger neck did it for me (I think?) . Personally I feel Robin is a much more prestigious brand than Fender and that your price is more than fair.
santellavision Posted April 20, 2015 Author Posted April 20, 2015 Here's the exact neck specs:Nut width is 11/16. Neck Depth is: 1st: fret: .858, 3rd Fret: .870, 5th: .895, 7th: .913, 12th: .938.
dhuber Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 I don't know anything about Robin guitars but being a Strat guy I'd love to own it. I just own too many guitars right now.
L2A3 Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 Unfortunately with Robin no longer producing works of art you are most likely going to have to deal with a Robin owner or someone already familiar with how well they are made. I think within the Robin community resale values hold up fairly well, it is just that we are a very small section of the buyers pool.
