Looks like caramel. I like caramel.

That's the natural amber of that piece of maple accentuated by the naphtha I use to pop the grain for the pix.

That's not what color it will be when I finish it. I'm going to bleach the Amber out of the top, pop the grain by dying it black and then sanding it off, and then shoot tinted clear nitro.

I won't spill what color it will be. i won't ruin it for Jim :-)

With the green inlay dots, I'm guessing it will have a green theme.

Green over that Quilt? Oh My, that would be spectacular! That is looking beyond.

You could just clear coat over the wood and let the flame stand out on its own. It was explained to us at the Hamer factory that doing the finish that way allows the flame to look like it moves around more.

Nah. Day-glo clown vomit burst with trans magenta tiger stripes overlaid. We'll never see a smidgen of the grain.

It's a trade off. Depends on what effect you are going for.

Dying it black and then sanding down does reduce the chatoyancy. It doesn't eliminate it though, just subdues it. The Payoff Is that the grain and contrast is brilliant and in your face.

I do them both ways and like both effects.

Is there any other way? I suppose "melt their f-ing faces off" would be acceptable, too.

Go big or go home.

I had to look up chatoyancy.

Jim - that looks insane! I hope the neck ends up being too fat for you and you sell it to me... Anyways - dibs...

The neck was spec-ed from one of my fave axes. If it's too fat then I have bigger problems than letting the Burrito go.

Yeah. It means your hands are shrinking :-)

Hey, Jim, have you sort of tempered your enthusiasm so as not to be disappointed if it doesn't blow away every other guitar you have sound-wise? I hate when people build up my expectations for, say, a movie, and I expect so much from it that there's no longer any way it can meet my inflated expectations.

Worst case scenario, if it doesn't sound good, it'll be the prettiest guitar hanging on your wall. But I doubt it'll be a stinker.

Frank, in the last 13 years, I have suffered from near-manic, debilitating enthusiasm and anticipation when it came to new guitars. It reached a tipping point with my C3. The C3 was something of a sobering event. To put it bluntly, I've since become more measured in my enthusiasm and anticipation and never assume that a custom order will automatically have all the mojo.

I have a lot of confidence in Meatbomb and his building skills. If there are any sound issues, it'll be easily remedied by a pickup change. :D

Oh, chatoyancy! Oh, I've personally experienced chatoyancy. Ya think it's just a fart, but no... No. It's a fart and then some...

I, for one, have high hopes for that guitar. It's looks so well-built that I can't possibly see how it could fail to please unless, as you suggested, it's not matched well to its pickups. Speaking of which (and I'm sure you probably already mentioned it somewhere in the thread, but) what pickups do you have planned for this?

I have a couple of prospects at the moment. I bought a SD Distortion which, to my ears, has a nice beefy sound that will work well with the balance of the brightness of the maple and the alder wings. I also have a SD Custom Alt 8 that sits unused. I'm leaving the final decision open until I find the right one.

I'll just put photo of a pickup in the neck slot and I'll see how long it takes him to notice. Could be years

Uh huh. I'll issue my final check to you drawing from a similarly empty account . See how long it takes to get an acceptable p'up in that bridge cavity.
