Hi All,

Has anybody ever seen a Sunburst like this one?

Based on the photos is there anything you can tell me about it? It's up for grabs at around $900 here in Japan. Is it worth it? Are they nice guitars? I mean, it's a Hamer, so it's bound to be better made than just about anything out there, but are Sunbursts nicer than, say, Studios or Artists?

Thanks!

That's a steal - even with the aftermarket added middle pickup. Just grab it!

Thanks guys, I take it their nice then? :)

I'll get that then and see how I like it. If it's not my thing, maybe somebody else on here will like it for $900. Cheers!

Pretty sure that's a lock!

Just be sure to take off the poker chip before the next photo shoot. ;)

Congrats on a soon-to-be-new-Hamer-day!

Edit: Regarding your specific questions, the Sunbursts aren't necessarily nicer than the Studio or Artist models, just different.

  • Sustainblock bridge
  • All mahogany with a maple veneer
  • No body contours (artist and studio both have carved tops and studios sometimes have tummy cuts)
  • MUCH older Sunbursts (until early '79?) will have a one piece neck vs. the "stressed neck" design that was used for the rest of the brand's lifetime.

Of the ones I've played, some of my favorite Hamers have the sustainblock bridge. I prefer it to a tune-o-matic by a mile.

When I click on them it saysd I don't have permission to do that. Why?

Huh, that's weird, says the same for me... Maybe it's an error with the software?

OK, I'm pretty intrigued by this one now. Definitely pulling the trigger :)

Thanks for the details!!

I can see that one. Is that the infamous Aceburst?

Aceburst? I take that's an Ace Frehley reference, right?

Why is it infamous? Don't tell me it made its way from the US to Japan and might now make the trip in reverse :D

Dammit, I just found out that this one doesn't have a serial number (didn't read the description properly :().

Is that possible for an 80s Hamer Sunburst? Are there fake Hamers floating around?

I'd be most grateful for an answer, because I can still decide not to pay on it and take negative feedback instead. It'd destroy my feedback, but better that than $900 down the drain...

That's a '79.

Man, I've still got lots to learn... How do you know? So it's all good then and I won't feel a fool in a couple of days when I get it?

Serial wrote the book on Hamers... literally. (http://www.schifferbooks.com/the-ultimate-an-illustrated-history-of-hamer-guitars-5216.html)

andrew's site has some great online info too. Definitely worth getting sucked into the clickhole there for an hour or two. :)

Nope. The "Aceburst" was an '81, had tighter flame and more of a true Cherry Sunburst. It also had a Sustainblock-ectomy in recent years and other mods since I owned it. I wouldn't want it back now.

That one in Japan is pretty cool - it may have been refinished (partially, as the top still looks original from the pics), or had the serial number removed, but it would have DEFINITELY left the factory with a serial.

Thanks for all the info guys! I'm gonna pay for it today. It will hopefully arrive on the weekend and then if my wife haven't killed me I'll post some first-hand photos :)
