zorrow Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 I'm looking for a powerful single-coil pup for a Strat-like guitar. I need it rock-friendly for singing leads, but still with enough dynamic range to cover some cool voicings, groovy vamps and clean leads. I stumbled upon the Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound (SSL4). What do you think about it? Any alternatives to it or recommendations?FYI, my amp is just a Tech21 Liverpool pre-amp (a great Vox AC30 simulator) feeding a Power Engine 60. A treble booster will be used on and off, plus a Lynch wah, and that's about it.
tbonesullivan Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Dimarzio has some nice offerings as well. Are you looking for with hum or hum free? I've been very happy with the sounds I get from the dimarzio Injectors in a G&L Legacy I have. They are hum cancelling single coil, but very strat like.
humfree Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Those Liverpools are awesome - is that what you play in your vids? I'm amazed by the headroom available when pushing it with a good clean boost. Turns a 1x12 into a much bigger sounding rig. I've been through quite a few singles, but I have always had a soft spot for Bill Lawrence - especially for a bridge pup. I always loved the L90XL and have always wanted to try the single coil version - L45 I think. I believe the noise free sets are leaning into P90 tone. Someone with better experience with them can guide you further. In keeping with the soft spots, Vintage Vibe used to be a couple of towns over. His Strat pups are outstanding, but pricey. Engineering marvels and works of art with a little magnet swapping compartment. They are clear, sweet, and provide rich, deep textured notch positions. Top drawer. I have an SP90 set - they are awesome. BG Pups makes a gutsy Strat pup for cheap as well. I have these in my Mexican - beware, the guy who winds them is stoned FWIW
Jeff R Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Unsure which position (or all?) you're shopping for single coils, but I cannot begin to describe how pleased I am with the James Tyler "Hot Laura" Alnico 2 I put in the neck of my ESP strat a couple years ago. It is the perfect compliment to the JB in the bridge for my ears and hands. Distinctly vintage voiced single (that tubular-sounding chime) with a little extra but not overbearing mid muscle. It works wonderfully clean, dirty and in between. No volume dropoff, at least nothing significant, from the JB.I don't have extensive experience with Tyler's line of pickups, but their guitars I've played have all had versatile and killer tones, singles, 'buckers or mixes of the two. If I was going SSS, a set of Hot Lauras with a Alnico V in the bridge would be my no-brainer. http://tylerguitars.com/?q=content/pickups
RobB Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 I like the Injector neck/bridge in my YJM Strat. They are very quiet, have some balls but still sound very "Stratty." Thinking seriously about getting a "Blackmore rig" together with 1/4 pounders. I'm told they are very ballsy. The key to a good sound is not to set set them too close to the strings. I know tobereeno uses these, he seems to like them.
SSII x 2 Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 I used to jam with a guy who had Quarter Pounders in his Tele.He was a great player, so natch, they sounded great. But theyare pretty powerful and quite noisy when cranked. But beingyou're a Strat guy you've probably made peace with single coilhum anyway...
tbonesullivan Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 I like the Injector neck/bridge in my YJM Strat. They are very quiet, have some balls but still sound very "Stratty."I like the injectors so much I may just sell my 30th anniversary legacy. They give me all the strat i need, even in the quack positions. Dimarzio knows how to make good noiseless strat pickups.
anotherfreak Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 I REALLY dig the DiMarzio Area pickups. Very strat-y and sensitive. I was amazed how they sound backed off the strings.
Brooks Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 i have a quarter pounder in the neck slot of my jackson,Zen recommended it to me when the GFS alnico single (that i loved in my mexi strat) sounded anemic in the jackson. improved the jackson, i'd recommend it.

I'm wondering whether to go this route with the neck/middle pickups on my Centaura. I know that the stock SDs get rave reviews, but to my ears, they are tonally incompatible with the JB bridge unit, which I think works well in the guitar.

BubbaVO Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Hot Rails or JB Jr are pretty good in the bridge position.
Craig S Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 I have one in my Fender Bronco... just took a Hot Rail out... I might like the 1/4 pounder better.
