This is 1 of 6 custom "E-Type" Robin Rawhides made for BCR Music back in 2006.

This is an awesome guitar.
That much should be obvious, but just in case the awesomeness is lost on you, I will explain.

The idea came to BCR Greg as he and I were on an airplane headed to Houston, TX to visit the Robin factory and Robin/Rio Grande owner/visionary, Dave Wintz.

I had recently acquired a '58 Fender Esquire and Greg was all horny for it. It was beat all to shit, had crater-sized wear divots in the fingerboard that Bill Nash himself literally marveled at, and it had a pickup which came straight from Hell. Eventually the light bulb went on and he said, "Hey, I'm gonna see if I can get Dave Wintz to make me a run of Esquire-type Wranglers.” (Dave had changed the name of the Wrangler to the Rawhide around that time).

Always one for a collaborative bull session, I quickly thought of a name, recalling one of my favorite cars, "The E-Type!"
Sounded like a great idea on a 4-hour flight. Now, the trick was to talk Mr. Wintz into it.

We got to the Robin factory, and Greg went to work on Dave. Unfortunately, Dave wasn't having any of it.

First of all, all Wranglers/Rawhides had factory routing under the pickguard for a neck pickup. Greg didn't want that.  Greg, being a huge Gibson Les Paul Jr fan, wanted a light body with none of the tone routed away. Plus, these were going to be custom, and this would be just one point to set these 6 guitars apart from the rest.

Second, the pickguard had to be "Telecaster" shaped, unlike the Robin's guard which followed the contour of the upper body bout. These had to be an homage to the Esquire, while still retaining their innate "Robin-ness."
The problem is, no such animal existed for a Robin, as the control plate differs from the Fender's.

And third, they had to have Rio Grande's (then) new Dirty Harry Telecaster bridge pickup. Dave had just unveiled the Dirty Harry for Telecasters, and they had the balls necessary to take this guitar where it needed to go.

While that discussion was going on, I went to the room where the necks were curing/drying and picked some sick-ass presentation-grade maple necks. Greg staked his claim on them, writing "BCR" on the neck heels.  It was either that or urinate on them. In retrospect, the preferred method was employed.

Eventually (and I think it was weeks later), Dave acquiesced to make the 6 guitars to Greg's specs, save for the pickguards.
Greg would have to do that himself, by hand, in his shop.
This was a win/win for both parties as it allowed Dave to take custom pickguard shaping off his plate, and it afforded Greg the freedom to make tort guards, black guards, pearl guards...whatever he wanted.

Submitted for your approval is one of those 6 E-Type Rawhides in 100%  original condition, zero fret wear and original Robin HSC, also in  beautiful condition.

We all know how special Robins are, and this is a  special Robin.

Just curious, does this have a big honkin' neck profile? What a gorgeous ride that is!

No, not this guy. It's no twig, but on the medium side.

I have been buying parts to make my dream Esquire and in my mind it looked almost exactly like this. Wow that is a nice one! My new to me Crackercaster is jealous

Well, that would narrow it down to four.  That's because mine will never be for sale.  Killer guitars.  Like a cross between a great Esquire and a Les Paul Junior.

I'd buy it but can't play a Tele. Never could. It's a brain thing. Love the sound...when somebody else does it.

Good luck.

Aw, man.  I was hoping this would be one of those that would languish for a few (more) months until I could justify the scratch it would take.  Damned new engine mounts and starter.  GLWTS!

Well here's some good news for you: The Dirty Harry is wound like a P-90, so if that Tele bridge pickup sound is what's scaring you, you'll be pleasantly surprised as to the amount of testes and girth this pickup packs.

Did somebody just get the deal of their year?  No matter what they paid, they did.

I think both parties are going to be very happy.
He gets a killer, rare Robin, and I'm getting back into the vintage Hamer Sustain Block Special bizness.
