Dutchman Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 Winters here and I’m looking for Idea’s for an amp build. Considering a Tweed Bassman 5F6A clone or a Dumble Super Overdrive clone. Anyone have any idea’s for a great sounding amp to clone?? Last winter I did a 3 in one build, Fender 5F1/5f2a/Martin DeArmond R5 combo. Fun versatile amp. Thanks for suggestions!!
G Man Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 I've heard a couple of the ceriatone hrm's and they are fantastic amps.

shankyboy Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 How about a clone of a Tone King Imperial MKII?

I believe the Tone Kings use PCB’s, I’m guessing their PCB’s are proprietory and impossible to find or duplicate. I do love the sound of their amps tho.

gorch Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 Deacy Amp as a standalone 10'' combo including treble booster.

I have been jonesing to try one out but nobody around here carries them.
duncans Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 The Dumble Overdrive amps are intense, you'd enjoy both building and playing. I keep toying with the idea of another one altho' I'm not a good enough player to play them clean or just slightly overdriven. They don't make mistakes or sloppiness sound good! I built a Brown Note D'lite(6v6 dumble type) amp several years ago form a kit they offered, wish I would have kept that one. A Creme Brule' off Ceriatones documents(half power Matchless C-30 ef 86 channel). Sourced the parts and modified a Lightning board. Way nice amp, my favorite. This winter I'm looking to build a Tweedle dee from the AmpGarage and a Fender Tweed Bassman 5B6 aka the Little Walter amp. It's fun isn't it?

seeker Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 If volume is not an issue, look at building a Trainwreck Express or Liverpool.
HamerDave Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 That’s funny. I’m going through the same process. What to build next? I’ve pared the list down to a Blackface Princeton Reverb, a tweed Vibrolux or a high power Twin. I really love the Tweed/Brownface/Blackface Fender designs. The harp player in my band is lobbying hard for me to do a 5F6a Bassman. He’s using a 5E3 Deluxe I built last year and loving it.
JES1680 Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 Love my ODS. Not an HRM and I didn't build it, but great amp.
Dutchman Posted November 16, 2018 Author Posted November 16, 2018 It’s come down to 3, a Dumble Clone, a fender 5f6a clone or a Vox clone... I’m going to give it to my son... so I gotta pick his brain without him knowing what’s going on and since I’ll be staying with him in Nashville I’ll have him help and hopefully spark an interest in amp building with him. Last year I gave him a Carr Viceroy, which he loves, but he’s kinda hankering for something with a little more grind.
sixesandsevens Posted November 16, 2018 Posted November 16, 2018 I've got a Bassman-inspired amp (Reverend Hellhound) that sounds pretty good as a combo, but just screams with a TS and a 2x12 cab. 10/10 would rock again
Jakeboy Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 I’ll name two that not many builders are currently making...but both rock like muthas.... 6g6b Blonde Bassman..,twang and BANG. Normal channel is gloriously perfect Fender goodness while Bass channel is overdrive ecstasy. 6g3 Brown Deluxe——the Fender that wants to be a Marshall. Chewy grindage. Nastiest circuit Fender ever made.

Jakeboy Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 Lil Dawg made mine using a BF faceplate cause he couldn’t find one, but that was back in 2012. I saw a faceplate on eBay and I do believe a regular undrilled BF Bassman chassis will work as a perfect fit. To be on safe side, email Jim at Lil Dawg. He will know the answer for sure. Great guy.
Jakeboy Posted November 17, 2018 Posted November 17, 2018 Just an observation....the 5f6a is widely considered the greatest guitar amp ever made....I went with the 6g6B after learning that Petty & Campbell used it all over Wildflowers. The Blonde is also the amp the Beatles used more than any other in the studio....guitar and bass. Throw an 12ax7 in v1 of the 5f6a, Run Brit speakers and it will sound like a JTM45. You cannot go wrong with either choice. I need Jim to build me a 5f6a...

I’ve been looking forparts sources for the 6g6b, it’s not looking good, plenty of parts for the 5f6a tho, just for the obscurity of the 6g6b I’m super interested. There’s a guy in Georgia that builds them. I’ve sent him an email for info on parts. I have a aa864 bassman stock other than a recap that I love. Gigged with it for years, it’ll never leave. The 6g6b appears to have a little of tweed and a little of blackface. I like that idea!!!
