Strat knobs

tweed

Question

Posted

I have a Strat build in progress. Parts on the way but can't seem to find any set screw Strat style knobs for a solid shaft potentiometer. All I can find are Tele type and the usual chrome, black and gold. I'm looking for set screw Strat style knobs for a Parchment color scheme to match the pickguard.  Tried the usual Ebay, Reverb, Amazon and a few DIY guitar sites.....so far ZERO, ZILCH, NADA.  Heck, I'll go custom made even if they're out there.

Maybe drill out some normal Strat knobs a bit so they fit the bigger shaft? The key is to go slow a little at a time…

For DIY you'd have to drill the splines out to the right size for the pot shaft and then  drill and tap a grub srcew to lock it to theshaft of the pot.

I know this sounds crazy but have you thought about a dab of hot glue?

The hot glue will dry into the shape of the shaft

I was thinking a dab of any sort of glue or caulking, preferably something that stays a little soft, like maybe rtv silicone? for easier removal someday.

I was thinking, perhaps wiping the shaft with a little coat of oil "but not too much as that would just be perverted"...🤣

"Just the tip."

Here's an off-the-wall thought: a set of splined pots isn't too expensive.  That also allows the option of changing to different Strat knobs in the future.

The thing is, I'm going for a "54" type Strat build. Found out that the early year models had 100K pots, then changed out later that year to 250K.  So far, the only decent (CTS) short shaft 100K pots I've found have a solid post.  Also found a splined type but they're tiny mini pots and the shaft is a bit longer. Have those on order too but don't know how far off the pickguard it would be. I'd rather stick with the CTS pots because I noticed they don't spin as easy while  pickin' the strings. You Strat type players know what I'm talking about.

I'm not sure if you can even find them anymore, but Carvin Strat-style knobs looked nearly identical to regular Fender knobs but had a set screw for solid-shaft pots.

ETA:  Looks like they might have made them in black only; I don't ever recall seeing them in white or cream.
