This 1979 Rick 4001. For me, it was simply the best "fit" ever--ergonomics (to include weight and balance), sonic properties, "blend" capability with a guitar in a three-piece format, etc. Traded even on a Leo-era L-1000 when I was trying out a "how-many-of-this-model-can-I-acquire" experiment, and while the G & L category was interesting, I should have stuck with the original "one of each" collection guidelines I had set.

For me, bringing in is 99.99% of the time something that's a project that I then never end up doing anything with. Getting rid of probably my 1st year Ibanez RG550 in Atlantic Blue. Looked like this one. I had it with EMGs: 89/SA/89 with splits. It was played a lot for 15 years and I hadn't played it an ages. Great guitar that covered a lot of bases. Any Hamers I've gotten, I've kept figuring I could always sell those later.

With that guitar tone he could play a buzz saw, no one would notice the difference.

Piper. Saw them open for 'Angel' at a small theater in Madison mid-'70s. They killed it. Don't remember the guitar.

Due to the guitar & hi-fi crowd, the supply of ANOS/NOS tubes are rapidly disappearing. I have a small stash of 12ax7s of various makes that I bought years ago. Glad I did, because im not paying today’s asking prices for such.

The natural finish forces them to select the best pieces. Can't cover up minor flaws with paint.

As long as there a real tubes to get real tube sounds I'll keep using those. Some of the newer tubes have gained ground towards what the engineers of the 40's 50's and 60's already new. They just wanted to build good tubes back then. They didn't know that they where creating incredible mojo at the same time!

Google Image attributed it to McCartney's guitarist, Jimmy McCulloch That said, it first highlighted the guitar and told me it was Lita Ford! 😄 I found zero photos of Jimmy McCulloch with that guitar.

Wow. As in the Piper with Billy Squire on vocals...

I wouldn't have believed it, but this photo from his facebook (and the one posted above by @dgstandard) seem to show the guitar in the same condition it's in today. Appears the owner is "Tommy Gunn" of Piper and there are photos allegedly from 1976 showing the guitar in its current state on his facebook.

Definitely something useful for everyone, especially as the number of tube makers continues to dwindle. I still mourn the loss of "The Tube Shop", who used to have email "telefunken@cox.net". I got some great ANOS and NOS tubes from them about 7 years ago. Not sure when they went away, but I think it was early 2021. I remember a few other dealers trying to get into ANOS, but I think those days are unfortunately over.
