BCR Greg Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 For our latest Bench Report, we have the ever-so-patient David B and his Phantom Custom that has been owned by 425 HFC members since I sold it to Stevie "By Gawd" Clay a few years ago... The factory routings, for a single at the neck and triple at the bridge... Since David was the original owner of the mythical Electraglide, he wanted to revisit that setup(triple and P-90). This little puppy is slated to sprout a Rio Grande Jazzbar! So I mask off the area that needs to be routed. A huge cup of coffee and a few Dremel bits later..... Tape removed, sanded.... Since he provided a clear guard and the route was an unusual shape due to the original route, I called him and offered to use the same material that is used for Les Paul Custom guards, to dress it up a little. He agreed(as if he had a chance!!!)... Of course, the wiring started out a mess, with new pots and switches... More coffee and a Milky Way bar leads to this..... SO........ How'd it turn out? Pretty freaking COOL!!!!!! And the tones? Awesome. Remember, kids, don't do this at home.
tomteriffic Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 Damn, that's the fourth guard on that thing since it was new. Each owner after StevieDamnClay put a different one on there. Triple and a P-90...... Hmmmmm. OK, put me in line to get it back, David.
Turdus Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 Looks real good Greg. Nice color choice for the pickguard.
David B Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 Great job Greg! I like the black pickguard better than the clear. Everything looks killer. I look forward to getting it. So Greg, what shall we call this one???

RobB Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 Very cool conversion. More like this, Greg. Your photog skills have almost eclipsed your tech-skills. I LOVE process! Again, more like this...
Disturber Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 So Greg, what shall we call this one??? The PHANTOGLIDE!!!!!!!!! You are correct sir! haha Sounds like a rubber brand, lol  "Use the Phantoglide now with fragrant lubrication". Nice job on the guitar by the way. LOOKS AWESOME. I want one too.
serial Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 That looks fantastic! That's an incredibly useful combination too! Hey, DavidB, did you have an early 80's Proto with a P90 added to the neck? Sam had one in the shop down there in the early 00's.
mattb Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 Nice work! I'd love to hear that combo. I bet it's sweet.
SteveC Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 That looks WAY cool! It's probably a little lighter too, what with all the wood removal for the P-90... (I keeed, I keeed!!)DavidB - congrats! You will of course provide a complete tone report when you get it back?Signed,Pre-PhantoGlide Prototype #1 Original Landlord

BCR Greg Posted October 27, 2006 Author Posted October 27, 2006 HANGMAN!!!!!!!Awright!!!!Thanks, everyone. I will be posting more Bench Reports(like I used to) as they develop. I try to shoot all the "interesting" repairs, but I have been SO swamped that it is hard to stop, figure angles and get rid o reflections, not to mention the time actually editing and and cleaning up the pics.......blah blah blah.I have a bunch of pertinent Bench Reports put together(they definitely make long flights go by fast when you are traveling as much as I seem to nowadays...) that are just waiting to a few bits to be completed. I have the book project continuing, so I have to keep some for that job and some to show here.Anyway, I just spent 30 minutes after closing ripping on David's guitar, and there are a TON of cool tones. The 3 way selector chooses bridge/bridge-neck/neck like a regular Hamer. The small 2 way toggle brings in the third coil, regardless of the 3 way. This leads to some every different and usable variations. My favorite is the bucker and third coil with the tone off....Michael Schenker all nite long, babies!!!!Next project, the equally patient Sir Doogie's snapped head B12S.....
kurtsstuff Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 I'll be sending that L.P. Junior here shortly . Can't decide whether to have you route it for a bucker or just install a dogear P-90....regardless...It'll be on it's way soon. oh..for those curious....headstock snapped clean off...
