Just got back from a week in Cape Cod. Had a blast. My advice on this topic is for your friend to take his favorite axe and best pair of headphones to his local store and try out as many units as he can. Everyone hears and experiences these things differently. I agree that if money is no object, there's not much question that the AxeFX II is king of the hill. Below that, IMHO, it's pretty subjective. Things I think really do make a difference: 1) Whether an electric guitar sustains unplugged. 2) Tuners 3) Wood type and quality in terms of ash vs. alder, maple vs. rosewood, new vs. old/sinker/recovered 4) Neck stiffness in terms of truss rod type, whether and how much the truss is under tension, neck grain orientation, 1-piece vs. laminated 5) 2- vs. 6-post trem I'm sure there's more, but those were off the top of my head.

My continued condolences. As a father, I don't even want to contemplate what it would be like.

I had a less-than-stellar deal with an HFC member in the past. Amp head missing feet (with screw holes on the bottom showing where the feet used to be), non-original/inferior quality/shorter power cord, and the wrong (but functioning) rectifier. I chose not to go public even after the member plead ignorance and refused to do anything for me. Buyer beware, everywhere.
