crunchee Posted January 17, 2025 Posted January 17, 2025 I got a email notice sent to me today by Vintage Guitar Magazine about an upcoming auction by an outfit called StringTree.co featuring the Dave Kotinek collection. The auction does feature a few guitars that may be of interest to HFCers (no affiliation to me, BTW): StringTree | 1979 Hamer Sunburst, repaired in 2005 by BCR Music StringTree | 1984 Hamer Sunburst "Sportomatic" StringTree | 1976 Ibanez Destroyer 2459 Apparently, it's a 'no reserve' auction, and opens at $1.00 each. Each auction also has it's own start date/time and doesn't start/end at the same time. alantig Posted January 18, 2025 Posted January 18, 2025 I've got my eye on that Destroyer. My wife has her eye on my eye and on my bank account.
donner Posted January 18, 2025 Posted January 18, 2025 At least StringTree are able to spell „Jol Dantzig“, „Rick Nielsen“ and „Martin Barre“ correctly. Not everybody's enabled to do that.

cmatthes Posted January 18, 2025 Posted January 18, 2025 Jol probably doesn't remember, but a few of us here will... The "Sportomatic" was a custom order by Sam Moss for his shop at 1825 W. Burke St. in Winston-Salem, NC. He had several custom orders named after motorcycles. Sam was awesome, but sadly passed away several years ago. Today would actually have been his birthday. 😢

crunchee Posted January 18, 2025 Author Posted January 18, 2025 Moss had an interesting history, from what this article says: Tar Heel Guitar Hero Sam Moss Gets His Due BTW, did anybody notice the info about Dave Kotinek himself, in the auction announcement? He supposedly died in an auto accident on his 64th birthday. Obviously, ain't no one getting any younger.

Just wanted to share that in case you plan on bidding.

Not a fan of that Tremolo or those pickups. That's just me. https://www.stringtree.co/auction/electric-guitar-hamer-guitars-standard-custom-2006 Even more.... https://www.stringtree.co/user/dugk
kizanski Posted January 18, 2025 Posted January 18, 2025 “…this creation blends Gibson and Gretsch design ideas with uncanny brilliance.” Another way to say it is, “It answers a question no one ever asked.” A ridiculous guitar.
stonge Posted January 18, 2025 Posted January 18, 2025 aaaiiiee! my eyes! Kiz - you gotta put a warning on sh@t like that lol. Soon to be featured in the second volume of The Book in the appendix 'Oops!'...

Just not my cup of tea. The older I get, the less interested I am in "one offs" or "special orders". And don't get me started about guitars with somebody's chicken-scratch signature obscuring the beauty of a good guitar. A guy sold me a Strat with Buddy Guy's signature on it. The next time he saw me play it, he noticed the autograph was gone. He said, "Is that the same guitar"? I said, "Yeah".

A couple of guys on this site had a penchant for custom ordering Hamers like the Gretsch/Hamer one above. They'd think of the different options, features and design cues from other guitar brands/models which had never been paired before and thought that they had created something new and different, when in reality they wasted their money on some gimmick guitar which ultimately served no purpose.
Steve Haynie Posted January 19, 2025 Posted January 19, 2025 I think that Standard is cool. However, it is the kind of guitar one buys when they have a few other Standards with different options. There is someone right now that has a collection of Standards or similar guitars that is going to want that Gretsch/Gibson love child.

Because some twit with too much money and no sense of taste was bored and thought, "You know what the world needs? An Explorer-shaped Gretsch."
