marcus2 Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Hi All,Given the responses, I'm putting my copy up for sale. It's in excellent condition. I bought it from Greg about 10 or 11 years ago. IIRC, I paid $75 back then. So, I'll sell it, shipped, for $80. Basically I'll break even.Let me know if you are interested. Thanks,Marc
bubs_42 Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Haven't seen on lately, but I think I paid $65 for mine. I would think they go for more if I remeber correctly.
bubs_42 Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 I am will to trade mine for a 77,78,79, Early 80 Sunburst's.. Any color.
elduave Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 One of my favorite "teaser" pics was the one below. I was waitng for Zandard 2 & 3 to arrive and didn't want to let the cat out of the bag. It's one of the guitars with the book next to it. A Zavatar if you will... I've looked long and hard at that book. I don't think I'd ever sell my copy. Maybe I'll get CT to sign it one day. Maybe with Zander. Robin, Zander. Zander, Robin. I just searched for scans from the book. No results but a lot of cool pics! Who was the other GOTS book about? Mark Knofler? Also, just read more about Piece Brewery & Pizzeria. Didn't know a "whole" lot about that place. It's all coming together now...
serial Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 I just searched for scans from the book. No results but a lot of cool pics!Who was the other GOTS book about? Mark Knofler? There were several scans from the book on Cheap Trick's website (under "Rick's Guitars") for years-not sure if it's there in the new site or not. I spoke to Rick about the book in 1998 at one of the "First Three Albums" shows. That's the only one. He had gotten things together to do a book on Entwistle's collection and had been shooting over there, but he was still trying to get that book out. Talked to him again about it on the phone in '03 or '04 after John dies and it was still in the works. Not sure, but it's possible that that ended up being "Bass Culture". I don't have that book (yet), but it's John's collection. As far as I know, the Nielsen book is the only one in the "series" unfortunately, I think it would have been nice to have several in that format. Entwistle, Gibbons, Petty/Campbell, Page, a few of the heavy hitter rockstar collectors.
santellavision Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 I have a copy I'd sell, if anyone really wants to buy one.
cmatthes Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Entwistle's "Bass Culture" book IS the apparent second-in-series, although it isn't technically a "Guitars of the Stars" book. Nielsen brought over the same crew that shot his book (Natkin/Pitkin) and spent a few weeks at John's country estate shooting guitars (no gold records, sadly ), jamming and recording brief notes on all the guitars and basses. The whole collection wasn't actually documented before they wrapped up, so there are a lot of cool things that aren't there (like a Hamer Quadbass). Cool book for your coffee table or guitar book collection either way. Worth tracking down.

HamStd Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 As is the case with many of these things, there are two sides to the story. This is the story that i heard from someone involved from this in the beginning. There was suppose to be a series of "Stars Guitars" books-starting with Rick Nielsen, then Billy Gibbons, then John Entwistle and then Steve Howe. As many of you know these projects cost a pretty hefty sum to bring to fruition (at least if you want it to be at the quality we all hope to get/see). In the end, it boiled down to people wanting or getting more $$ then others and that is why there are 4 separate books. As Chris noted, the photography was to be done by the Pitkins, but that didn't all work out. There is a Steve Howe Collection book (done by Tony Bacon I blieve who has done alot of really good guitar books, it was put out by Miller Press that also did the Chinnery Collection book) and Steve Howe was also involved in the CD/DVD demo of the Chinnery Collection. The Entwistle book as noted was not complete, it was what they had and then from what I heard certain people starting asking alot more before cases would get cracked or photos would be taken that is why it is a bit broken. In the end, they are all good books. Certainly if you are into Hamers, the Nielsen book is the best to see a bit of history and ALOT of the cool custom pieces. As many of you know alot of those pieces were not his (every one with a plain backdrop is not likely to be his) but in the end who cares, when else are you going to see some pieces like that. Same goes for the other books. I am sure we have all seen most of those pieces at some point in time on stage, so it is very nice to be able to see them upclose and documented like that.Peter.
elduave Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Bump. Now for sale. Marc Timing is everything!

As many of you know alot of those pieces were not his (every one with a plain backdrop is not likely to be his)...I didn't know that! Do you mean they never belonged to Rick or they belong (and always did) to someone else now, but Rick owned them in the past?Inquiring minds want to know! Thanks for posting that.
mirrorimij Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 I can't remember exactly which pieces but I know for a fact that some of the guitars in the book came from Ax in Hand in Dekalb, IL. Since Dekalb is right down the road from Rockford it makes sense that Larry (Ax in Hand owner-RIP) and Rick did business a lot in the past.Edited to add I think the lefty Strat was Larry's.

(as he plays guitar lefty). Alot of the guitars belong to Scott Jennings (who Rick also had a very good relationship with) Just like Larry (who had at least one or two of EVERYTHING), I had the previlage of visiting "The Barn" once. With regards to the guitars, the concept was to have that image shot on the screen along with each of his guitars to show the significance or tell a story of each of the guitars (ie., the shot of his wife in the background of that scarab that he gave her for a birthday present). Honestly most collections would pale in comparison to what Rick had (and even more he was using all the pieces in heavy rotation before they became vintage collectables). As you can imagine it is a MAJOR undertaking to bring out that many guitars and have them all done in one or even five shootings. I was told the ones with the white backgrounds (or non-image) were not his guitars but just added in to represent pieces he had or had in the past.Peter.

That might explain why during a meet and greet Q&A with the band in the mid-90s, some guy asked about the number of pickguard holes and why one Strat had a white guard instead of a mint guard...(P Rick responded something to the effect that "Why don't you tell me? You obviously know more about that stuff than I do!".

They laughed and said no, it was Jon, but that says a little bit about their relationship with the record company (they mispelled Rick's name somewhere too). Then they said my answer was much better than theirs. Another time, at the Q&A after the first night of the NYC 3-night stands, I asked them something about Eddie Kurdziel (Redd Kross) wanting to produce them, and then, if Robin "put in" the chick from Divinyls when they worked together. Bun E. seemed to enjoy that question.
