DavidE Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 I saw Motley Crue last night. In general, the concert was more show than substance. I frankly don't think much of their songs and hearing so many back to back highlighted for me that most sounded the same. I thought Vince sounded good while my drummer thought he sounded bad. Tommy played well during the songs, but his solo was a joke from a musician's standpoint but visually cool from a show standpoint. Sixx appeared to be in good health with high energy and clarity. He didn't do anything on bass that my 14 year old drummer son couldn't do and at one point in the show where it was just him and Tommy, his timing was terrible. But he got the job done. His "solo" section was, again, a visual thing. Mick Mars. He didn't shuffle as badly as Ozzy, but he walked like an old man. But walk he did. He was all over the stage during the night. HIs hip replacement and other problems didn't seem to affect his guitar playing any. His playing was tight and smooth. Nothing really spectacular or anything, but he played well and sounded good. The freak show was cool.
Disturber Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 The freak show was cool.Isnt' this what they have allways been about? They even admit themselves in "THe Dirt" thatmany of the albums they released in the 80's whererecorded in a haze of booze and drugs, and thatthey are pretty bad. As far as individual solosin a concert goes it feels extremely dated.I rather have the band chug out two, threemore songs than having to listen to someidiot wanking on guitar, drums or even worse bass! It's a rip off and that is when I leave and head for the bar.Motley Crue was about being the worst in everything.Just like Kiss. Lot's of bands in the 80's had bettersongs, like Ratt, but where are they today. Nostories about sex videos or killing musicians in other bandsthat have kept their momentum going, so they are almostforgotten today.
serial Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 Case in point where even horrible publicity is good publicity.I still like the Shout at the Devil album...
MARKVECTOR82 Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 We must stop Mick Mars in our lifetime...Do it for the children. the guy blows always did always will. I dont say these things about fellow players but in his case... the guy just makes me Ill.
Disturber Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 We must stop Mick Mars in our lifetime...Do it for the children. the guy blows always did always will. I dont say these things about fellow players but in his case... the guy just makes me Ill. Don't get me wrong. I'd love to see the Crue.I've always loved a good freakshow. Justhold back on the solo parts.Mick does his job. Not every band needsan Yngvie Malmsteen. I think he's cool.
Steve Haynie Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 I like Motley Crue. I like Mick Mars. I did not like the $60+ price of a ticket for a bad seat, so I missed this tour.Flame away, but Shout At The Devil is a perfect heavy metal album. Mick Mars has played some great licks over the years.
DavidE Posted March 9, 2005 Author Posted March 9, 2005 I don't think I saw any Hamers. Mars stuck to strats and I didn't get a good enough look from my high in the sky, but good view, seat (about $40 with all the fees so not too bad) to get any details on them. Sixx appeared to play Gibby Firebird basses all night except for some cheapo Fender P or J that got smashed at the end.No, Mick is not one of the greats and there are plenty of HFC members who could do what he did in their sleep. But, he played well and didn't take up a real solo spot. That was left to Sixx and Lee. Sixx didn't take a bass solo. His was more percussion, keyboard and welder. The coolest part of their show? The keyboard stands that were basically like springs.
kurtsstuff Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 Like I said before ...yeah...Mick might be average at best as a player but it's been a very important ingredient that made the crue what they are and what are they you ask? MORE FRICKIN RICH AND FAMOUS THEN ANY OF US WILL EVER BE!! lol
Hamerica Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 Ah, Shout at the Devil, where is Salem when you need him? I remember watching Motley Cure ads that were in Japanesse before they were signed to Elktra. That was really fun stuff. Shout At the Devil is one of the FM albums that you can play the whole thing I find something you like. My favorite though is Doctor Feelgood.Regarding Mick Mars. My ex-guitar teacher described Mars as either being very proficient in the studio or whoever played those tracks as being very proficient in the studio. He couldn't decide if Mars actually played all of his materail because when seeing Motley live, Mars was either smashed or not familar with enough of the solo parts to make it sound good.I saw Motley on one of thier last tours, front row, dead center. IMO, in that one time only ever seeing their show, it was one of my top 10 concerts. Sixx has that rock god persona. I haven't seen that much exposed silicone since building two engines. Strippers were everywhere. Even the girl next to me was exposing herself. The girl I was with, thought Sixx was the one with the sex appeal. He obviously like her. Come to think of it, she used to be an ex-stripper. Vince couldn't hit all the highnotes, make that half of the highnotes.Tommy was the best musician of the bunch. He looked like he was having fun on that night.Mick stood to the left of Vince. Didn't come out front much and only then when it was chorographed. Towards the end of the show, Mars saw my T-shirt an old Rick Nielsen 5 neck orange Hamer shirt. Pointed at me, smiled, and finished playing the ending riff of Dr. Feelgood. The show itself was good. The songs were good. The girls, well, they were bad. All in all, a typical Cure show from what I have heard. I have tickets for them next Thursday. Way back in the back so the music will either stand on its own or the better have tv screens.
DavidE Posted March 9, 2005 Author Posted March 9, 2005 They had tv screens, but didn't use them well. They were off for the second half of the first set. They showed movies along with songs for a lot of the later stuff. I would have liked to see more closeups of the guys.Great pyro though.
GusS Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 The show itself was good. The songs were good. The girls, well, they were bad. All in all, a typical Cure show from what I have heard. yep.. robert smith loves them fake-tittied stripper types and they love him!
Stike Posted March 9, 2005 Posted March 9, 2005 The thing that kills me is in all the press I've read they list Mick as 48, yeah right! I saw 'em on the Feelgood tour for free so I don't think I need to pay thru the ass for bad seats, Tommy was great. They don't have Warrant opening this go round do they?
frank_c Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 Lot's of bands in the 80's had bettersongs, like Ratt, but where are they today. better songs and a bigger asshole up front.
Bass Guy Dave Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 I also saw Crue on the Dr. Feelgood tour (also for free!) We weren't in great seats, but the songs were played pretty recognizable. Mars played ok until he got pissed and walked off the stage when somebody hit him with a shoe...Tommy Lee's solo thing was not a virtuostic display, but he entertained and won the crowd, which has always seemed to be his thing. I liked it--thought it was cool. Reminded me of the fun of just jamming. And I agree. "Shout at the Devil" was a cool album. Totally reminds me of junior high. (As a budding Priest fan, I also remember my surprise upon discovering "Knock 'em dead, kid" was a total rip-off of Preist's "Grinder" from British Steel...and not nearly as cool.)Best Wishes
Kurt L Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 Come to think of it, she used to be an ex-stripper.Just wondering, how did she stop being an ex-stripper? :-)I take Crue for what they are, a B-level band that's a lot of fun.
Hamerica Posted March 18, 2005 Posted March 18, 2005 Come to think of it, she used to be an ex-stripper."Just wondering, how did she stop being an ex-stripper? :-)" Kurt, Well she obviously did it for the cash. When she got enough cash to pay off her college loan, and put a couple of 100' grand in the bank, she quit. But back to the Cure - saw the show last night in Dallas. To me it was a typical Motley Cure show. The mix was off and on all night. Sounded like that had a backing track on some songs. Nikki was playing in the wrong key on several songs. Mars sounded strong in several parts. Some of his leads were too long but tasteful. Vince. Vince didn't sing half the night. He let the crowd do it so he could hit some of the high notes. I admit I do like it when you have 15k of audience singing "your" song. Nikki Sixx doesn't need drugs, he just needs 15K singing his songs. Home Sweet Home brought a tear to my eyes. Really. I could have done without the circus. Musically, the band were rushing through songs. Even Live Wire was rushed. The votes were interesting - 2 adults and 2 kids ages 13 - 17, of the same shows we have seen in the past 12 months, here is how the rank.Aerosmith / Cheap Trick Adults - 2 Place, Mr 17 - 3rd Place, Mr. 13 - 1st Place Tesla / Scorps Adults - 1st Place (Tesla Rocked) Mr. 17 - 2nd Place, Mr. 13 - 2nd Place Motley Cure Adults - 3rd Place (don't forget sound check), Mr 17 - 1st Place, and Mr. 13 - "This is not coming out of my allowance." Last place. Now what is intersting is this. The 17 year old is the one that begged me for Duran Duran tickets. The 13 year old will give you his 17 year old brother for front row tickets to see AC DC.Go figure.

It was quite eye opening to get his reactions to the constant slagging he's taken for his playing over the years. Turns out, he's questioning the decision he made long ago to join Motley Crue, when his true love is the blues. The interview gave me a newfound respect for the guy, particularly since he faced the degenerative disease he has since he was a teen.

I saw that issue and agree that it was a pretty cool read. It was interesting that, on the eve of their their big reunion tour, he was hinting that some band members might be plotting to get him out. Expecially in light of the Dave Navaro rumors...Mick seems like a good dude.

Yeah, it's always interested me since the advent of online guitar forums how easy it is for people to sit behind a keyboard and rant about other people's music, choice of gear and the like. Mick DOES seem like a good guy who made some choices in his life that although he may question, he's certainly not going to apologize for and I don't blame him. He readily admits in the interview that alot of guitarists can play circles around him and he doesn't care. He made it big and reaps the rewards, which is something none of us here can really say.The other part I failed to mention is his absolute refusal to accept pity for his health. Like the Crue or not, the guy's got CLASS in spades IMO.
DavidE Posted March 18, 2005 Author Posted March 18, 2005 "Just wondering, how did she stop being an ex-stripper? :-)"The only way to stop being an "ex-stripper" is to start stripping again.
silentman Posted March 18, 2005 Posted March 18, 2005 He readily admits in the interview that alot of guitarists can play circles around him and he doesn't care. There are plenty of guys in big bands with "little talent". Sometimes it just takes the right bunch of guys/girls with the right bunch of songs and a little "luck". I don't mean anything bad, but for a handful of virtuosos out there, there are many more less talented folks to go around with different strengths.
LordOfTheThighs Posted March 18, 2005 Posted March 18, 2005 It seems like it's always the same. Such and such band's guitarist has always played like sh!t. Mick Mars IS a good guitarist. The best? No. The worst? No. But what he plays fits perfectly into MC. He comes up with killer riffs, and catchy rhythems. I'm not the Crue fan I once was, but I felt the need to post my opinion. "Knock'em Dead Kid" is a rip-off of "Grinder"?! Please. I saw MC open for Ozzy on their SATD tour. PURE Energy. And they KICKED ASS! I'm not sure if it was before Ozzy snorted the ants or after, but the same tour. If you want to watch someone spank their guitar monkey, go see Vai or Satch. If you wanna see a Rock Concert, go see The CRUE, or KISS ***Rant Off*** No catfood jingles.
hardheartedbill Posted March 18, 2005 Posted March 18, 2005 anyone who walks into a studio staring at a reel of blank tape and hands in Girls Girls Girls or Dr Feelgood is a good player, period , end of discussion
