Jeff R Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 Checking in briefly from the office, came in to take care of some urgentries. We did fine at the house. A few neighbors have big ass trees down in their yards but all missed their houses. The trees started coming down after I talked to Kiz yesterday, the storm picked up in intensity - I was out on the carport with a beer at one point enjoying the show and a gust literally picked me up from behind and threw me about five or six feet into my car. Bad ass!Still no power, spotty phone and cell service and since it's clear as a bell outside now and no a/c, my house should feel like a sauna in the next few hours. All the more reason for me to get outside and rake up all the leaves and limbs strewn all about my yard.I haven't even begun to surf for news accounts of the aftermath, but I monitored the AM radio yesterday and the spotty reports were making me sick to my stomach. Too many friends and family down that way - thank gosh most either evacuated or were in safe spots in the city. Thanks to all of you for all your thoughts and prayers, from ALL of the Cajun contingency.
JordanL Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 CajunBoy, fooderman, JeffR, and everyone else in the storm area:Glad that everyone made it through with their health, the most important thing. Property and possessions can be dealt with later.
kizanski Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 "I was out on the carport with a beer at one point enjoying the show and a gust literally picked me up from behind and threw me about five or six feet into my car. Bad ass!"That's my pal, Jeff!Glad to see all you guys are ok.
BCR Greg Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 I was out on the carport with a beer at one point enjoying the show and a gust literally picked me up from behind and threw me about five or six feet into my car. Bad ass!I nominate Jeffro for OFFICIAL HAMER FAN CLUB MOFO.Any seconds?
MCChris Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 I nominate Jeffro for OFFICIAL HAMER FAN CLUB MOFO.Any seconds? What's the big deal? A normal summer breeze could toss that guy around.
cmatthes Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 My wife got a call from her mother earlier this morning - sounds like things are getting pretty bad down there. They are still at the Hyatt (near Mercy Hosp. and the Superdome), and said that patience is wearing thin for everybody as the living conditions worsen and there is no communication at all about what is going on. The media is all around them, but they can't catch a broadcast. There is apparently no fresh water, and the supply of bottled water where they are is being carefully rationed, as is the food. She said that they've been watching looters from the windows moving around without any interruption and that the smell is getting really bad. Two sisters that are staying on the same floor with them were just notified by rescue personnel this morning that the 4 other members of their family who stayed behind didn't make it. It sounds like this is a "tip of the iceberg" thing, and that the after-effects will probably be devastating. My mother-in-law is spending the day at the Hospital to try to pitch in, as it sounds like the emergency and Healthcare folks are running on empty. On the positive, they made it through the storm part alive, now just need to figure out how to get the hell out of town. My wife said that they all sounded pretty desperate to leave...
Buzzy Fretts Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 What's the big deal? A normal summer breeze could toss that guy around. Besides, its his fault he left those cinderblock shoes inside. Cajuns, its great to hear that you and your homes were spared. MC2, sorry to hear about the loss. Hope your tentant turns up OK. Chris, good luck to your mom-in-law. It may be a little while till they can get out. They should try everything they can to get mobilized. But they should really temper their hopes. Stress and anger ontop of the coming heat will really wear someone down. They should conserve their energy if the water is being rationed. Was the Hyatt the hotel that lost the north wall of windows?
Rockola Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 Glad to hear the Cajuns are okay. Sorry for the bad news, Jon.High-res photo of levee breach
thecajunboy Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 Yo Chris,I'm back home. I've got power, internet, and a willingness to help. It's gonna be bad in New Orleans for awhile. Let me know if I can assist in getting them out in some kind of way. The phone service is bad. I can call local, but all the long distance is hosed, but for some odd reason, long distance can dial in. Cell service doesn't exist in some areas. For now I can't even get close to the city. I'm about 10 miles from teh western perimeter that's blocked off. When they do start to let people out, and others back in, I don't know what's gonna happen. Hopefully the airport will be open. I probably won't be able to access the city anyway, without a photo ID with a NOLA address. Shoot me some e-mail, and we'll see what we can do to help them out. I'll drive them to Houston if I can so they can get a flight. But first, I've got to find my son. He's with his mother somewhere, but I don't know if they're okay, where they are, or anything else.
Buzzy Fretts Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 Filtering through some of the jumbled sound bites posting at CNN is a clarification on the levy break and ongoing results. Things are unfolding in slow motion. "Water poured into New Orleans from Lake Pontchartrain after a two-block-long breach opened overnight in a section of a levee that protects the low-lying city.Nagin had said that about 80 percent of the city was flooded and that some areas were under 20 feet of water."
Bass Guy Dave Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 Glad to hear everybody's safe so far from the CB , JeffR, Fodermon, and Matthes families. Hope everybody else down there comes through ok.I would now like to state plainly for the record that all looters are due a respectable ass-beating. Man, that stuff pisses me off......Best wishes and safe travels for all.
Guest galejt Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 The freekin USS Bataan is offshore Biloxi awaiting orders to participate! That's a 600 bed hospital and who knows how much fresh water generation. It also makes for a very nice regional airport for vertical air traffic and has S&R capabilities. Cool!

They're gonna need more. CNN just sent a breaking news alert "Rising waters force evacuation of tens of thousands who sought refuge in New Orleans rescue centers, state governor says." Bad to worse....
thecajunboy Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 All I can say is Thank You Lord, for treating me so kindly in this mess. My whole town is still without power except for my subdivision and one other area. It's hot as a mutha outside and all I had to do was pick up my sycamore tree that snapped in half, and a gang of river birch branches that got shook loose. There's some shingles missing, and that's it. I sweat my ass off and come into my cool, air-conditioned home, and drink cold beer. Meanwhile, thousands of others are screwed really hard. Please, tonight, thank whomever it is that you thank, and pray however you do, for the poor people caught up in this mess. I'm still unable to get to my work, so I'll probably look for a place to do some volunteer work locally tomorrow.
SteveB Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 If they don't get those Levee breaks fixed its going to get way worse. Sucks that NO "survived" the initial hit only to have Levee's fail.
kizanski Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 I'm still unable to get to my work, so I'll probably look for a place to do some volunteer work locally tomorrow. You're a good man, Mark Daigle.
Guest galejt Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 Just got a call via satphone from one of our boyz in Gulfport. They drove in through Montgomery. Route was clear until they crossed I-10 at which point it turned into a wasteland. If you had property near the Beach...well you HAD property near the Beach. It ain't there now. They had to dodge looters to get to the Base. I'm not even going to comment on that. We have committments in Nawlins but no one is traveling there from the East. Got to go up and around and with martial law in effect, it's dicey they will get into the intallations on their list.
elduave Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 This thing is staggering. I just saw some footage of the Grand Casino in Gulfport and it's trashed. It's hitting home since Ariana and I where just down there for Jazzfest and a Crowes show in Gulfport. In fact, watching all the coverage is making me very sad and physically ill. My thoughts are with y'all.
thecajunboy Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 Dave, You should see the Fairgrounds, where Jazzfest is held. It's trashed too.
sw686blue Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 Glad you guys are ok. I've seen the footage and it is real scary.
foodermon Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 foodermon here. Earlier I was thinking I'd post a pic of this giant ass oak tree that fell on my house, but that is miniscule compared to the widespread devastation and impact to life left behind by Katrina. Hearing and watching the reports leave me somber and feeling extremely fortunate. I know many of those areas they are showing in the footage. I've heard from a few of my friends from the area, but there are a few others I just don’t know about yet. One of my friend’s dad dared to “ride” it out. He’s now trying to keep above water in the Lakeview area that was hit really hard by the levee break. He shoulda known better. I’m so thankful that the tree that landed on my house didn’t hurt anyone. Similar trees that fell on other homes in the neighborhood sliced the house in two or three. Were that to happen in my case my family would have been around the path of the fall (shudder). Very very thankful. LSU will be aiding many of the people that are put out. The campus is just a shout away so I will be looking to help, as well as probably putting up any of my friends that may not have a place to go back to. This is absolutely terrible.Jon, I'm glad you were one of the ones that knew to get out. A house can be rebuilt.Chris, I hope your inlaws can leave asap. anyone in the hotel shelters or in the dome needs prayers for patience, and they have mine.
mc2 Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 HEY....IF ANYONE COMES ACROSS A FLOOD MAP OF NEW ORLEANS THAT SHOWS THE GENERAL WET AND DRY AREAS AFTER THE HURRICANE PLEASE POST A LINK !!...or if any of the HFC Nawlins crew talks to anyone in the Bywater/9th Ward area...PLEASE ask for specific conditions on Desire Street (as in "A Streetcar Named...") along the first few blocks off the Mississippi (Chartes St. to Dauphine St.) I'm assuming the worst but hoping for the best. Can't find any specifics of aerial pics yet...hoping that might mean it's NOT drastic enough for TV news shock value. Ya know, if the Louisiana politicians weren't some of the most corrupt in the world (see the long list of indicted governors, mayors, etc.) perhaps a lot of what failed during this hurricane would've been fixed a long time ago with the millions of $$ of missing money. What a sad cultural loss to everyone this is....
Hamerica Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 I have watched the HFC and noticed the Cajuns are doing o.k. I am very grateful -you guys are great. I have many business contacts, friends, and people that I care greatly for in the New Orleans, East Bay St. Louis, all the way out to Meridian, MS. I am not able to get to some of them. This is going to get a lot worse before it gets better. My company is going to provide at a minimum one truck load of potable water through one of our partners as soon as we get permission to truck it in. One of my friends was informed he has lost his home. According to him, he will not be available to verify that for himself for almost a week.I was one of the first people he called as he is absolutely heart broken. My prayers and thoughts go out to each of those that are affected by this tradegy. I hope you and yours are safe. Best wishes,Brian aka Hamerica
killerteddybear Posted August 31, 2005 Posted August 31, 2005 Best of luck to everyone affected by Katrina. It's gonna take some big hearts and hard hearts to get through the aftermath.
