Facebook Sceptic Needs Guidance

Question

Posted

OK, so I'm not into facebook, not my thing. Not DISSING it, but I'd rather spend the time playing guitar.

My band is working up a facebook page. I had a friend log on and l poked around a bit on the site. I see the appeal of the whole networking thing, but I really just want to be left alone, basically (anti-social networking?).

Is there a way to create an account w/o the obligations of "walls", "likes", "friends", etc and keep it neutral and professional vis a vis the band site? I guess I'll have to contribute on some level, but can I do it w/o having to deal with marginal characters from my past, with relative anonimity?

Can I use a nom de plume?

Can I register with a temporary email addy?

Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Remember - before you sign up - that you can't un-sign up. Once you're in there, you can't close the account.

I never liked it, did it because my last band wanted to, looked at it maybe twice, and tried to cancel. Nope.

Yes, you can use a nom de plume and register with a gmail or yahoo account. You can control who sees what on your "wall" (homepage), so for instance, only the people you have befriended can see anything you post there. I think anything you post on the band's will be visible to anybody, though.

I only signed up to check out a buddies tour page... and I keep getting tons and tons of friends requests. I really don't know what to do about them... I hope no one gets offended.

Well then. When I tried, it would only allow me to de-activate the account, not remove it. I keep getting those damn 're-activate your acount' messages.

I'll have to try harder.

And it's OUTTA HERE!!!

Thanks for the link!!

I signed up as "Roy Batty" just so I can see stuff on facebook without actually having a membership that's tied to my name. A Facebook page just for your band should be easy and drama free, just make liberal use of the privacy settings and you'll be good.

Are you sure you're not on MySpace? Actually, MySpace is supposed to get a revamp, so that it's more about music and artists/bands and less about tweens and teens. But I think that they've been saying that for years. I never really noticed Facebook being that artist/band/music oriented, myself.

Gone, Like Tears in Rain

I have a band page and NOT a personal page for all of the aforementioned reasons. I find that it's enough in terms of being findable, and you can post pictures etc. without getting dragged into all the BS. But again, you can't see what anybody posts in their accounts, and miss a lot of social things. To me, that's totally worth not getting a cell-phone ping every time someone takes a dump.

The best way to do it is to create a fan page, though it takes a current Facebook member to do that. There are 3rd party music players which you can embed on that fan page, too, which you cannot put on your regular personal Facebook page.

On the fan page you can put up pictures, put your songs on the player, and put your schedule up. It is also a good marketing tool for keeping your fans informed. (But I am getting tired of how much Facebook has become a marketing tool for my friends).

Thanks to everybody for their posts. I have a better idea how to proceed now...

Man, after dicking around on facebook for that half-hour at my bud's house I really GET how anyone can get drawn in and totally LOST in surfing the social network. We're curious creatures by nature, and fb makes it seductively easier to be even curiouser..! ;)

Set up a band page (like i did). You wont get friend requests or annoying apps. Only annoyance is FB trying to get you to sign up 'proper' - DO NOT DO THAT...
