phantomgt Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 Playing Hamers or not, who's your most favorite recent discovery?Even though they're ESP players, mine definitely has to be Symphony X.Great technicality, but a great sense of melody, and they can groove in the pocket when necessary.Just a great new sound, great production, and very strong writing. For those of us who are into progressive heavy rock, they are definitely the top group, for me at least.
Scottcrud Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Mastodon, really a killer metal band that totally remind me of a lot of 80's thrash/death metal bands. Good stuff.
Stike Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Supagroup. Les Paul, SG, Marshalls, highly derivative and highly fun. Horns way up.
Submariner85 Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 In Flames............Heavy with a hint of Korn influence.
serial Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 I've been listening to Waltham a bunch lately (thanks to jwhitcomb!)
mudshark Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Reckless Kelly................kickass Austin band
wyldbil Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 The Darkness. Can't wait til their new album comes out in November!
jwhitcomb3 Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 I've been listening to Waltham a bunch lately (thanks to jwhitcomb!) I think that Thundernotes posted that. I gave them a listen but decided they weren't my cup of tea. No reason though...they have all the elements I like. They just didn't click with me for some stupid, irrational reason.I've been listening to Ad Frank and the Fast Easy Women all summer. Killer stuff!BTW, my kids have become huge fans of The Shazam. Me too!-Jonathan
HAMERMAN Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 I dig Symphony X also. It's not like they are new but for me it's Queens of the Stone age. I really loved Songs for the Deaf. The new album and their debut album kick ass too.
Bluesking Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 I've been cranking the Silvertide album quite a bit lately. Nothing too groundbreaking, but a good ole' honest to goodness rock n' roll band is hard to find these days.Good stuff boys and girls.
Cheap Chick Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Cheap Chick just did the honors of opening for Silvertide... My new favorite is Slaid Cleaves.. though I can only take so much before I start bawling my eyes out and want to drink a boilermaker! ha ha!
BruceM Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Cheap Chick just did the honors of opening for Silvertide... And I was there to photograph it! Here's Silvertide from backstage. Very high energy show. And there's lots of funny stories from the merchandise table. Heide got the scoop from the lead singer, as he sat with her during the Cheap Chick show, just before they went onstage. That's him, the extremely active one standing atop the drum set. They nearly blew my eardrums out when the launched into their first song as I was chatting directly behind the drums.
discountsounds Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Saw TONS of great music this weekend in and around Chicago, but Glossary from Murfreesboro, TN won me over. Check them out on myspace.com.
David B Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Not exactly new, but my newest fave - Foo Fighters, I love The Darkness too.
elduave Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 I thought the last Franz Ferdinand record was good, and I'm really digging the new Hot Hot Heat.
BruceM Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 I've been listening to The New Pornographers latest release, Twin Cinema. Very good power pop from this group. They'll be playing at 1st Ave next month, and I'll be there for sure.http://www.thenewpornographers.com/I've also been listening to Bob Mould's latest release, Body of Song. He'll be playing in town next week, and I'll be there as well...
wgarces Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 I really dig HIM and Dropline. Too bad Dropline just recently broke up.
doody Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 dropkick murphy's alot lately. They aren't new but...
lhrocker Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Adagio and Dragonforce - Great guitar playing!!!
jisham Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Believe it or not, I got turned on to Keith Urban this past summer and really dig not only his songwriting, but that boy can play the shit out of a Tele and LP Junior IMO.I grew up in the heart of Texas where C&W was the staple and once I got to college I never listened to any again. After I checked out Urban, I starting tuning into CMT every once in awhile lately and was stunned to hear/see that mainstream C&W these days has way more to do with 70s classic rock than country from what I can tell.
MrGuitarguy Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 The Darkness. Can't wait til their new album comes out in November! Damn Straight!!
Moose Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Country music ain't country no more. It's just pop sung with a twang. Last time I listened to country radio, when someone ELSE was in charge of the station and I was stuck in a car with her for 4 hours, there were at least three of the heavy rotation songs that were covers of 70s rock/pop hits. They don't even PRETEND to be creative or traditional. However, the one benefit I have seen is that they actually let their guitarists do some old fashioned pickin' on stage while the Fred Durst genre of drop D one finger guitarists never really play more than power chords ad nauseum. For a while, I was convinced the only place you'd ever hear a guitar solo was after the middle 8th of a song on country radio.
DEMENTED Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Shadows Fall..these guys blow me away with their mix of shred, thrash and plain old ripping! I can only take the vocals for awhile though...if only he'd sing in his normal voice instead of cookie monsters
KorinaHound Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Reckless Kelly................kickass Austin bandHave you checked out The Gene Pool? http://www.thegenepool.tv/ I caught 'em at a benefit earlier this year and really enjoyed 'em.KorinaHound
KorinaHound Posted September 19, 2005 Posted September 19, 2005 Believe it or not, I got turned on to Keith Urban this past summer and really dig not only his songwriting, but that boy can play the shit out of a Tele and LP Junior IMO.The Ranch was recorded when he was traveling a lot as a three piece. Had a bass player from an R&B background and a rock oriented drummer. Once he went solo it became Nashville "polished." There is one song on the Ranch that always cracks me up. I swear they must have written three or four different endings and couldn't decide which one to use, so they used 'em all.Enjoy.KorinaHound
