dewey finn Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 Other than a Tube Screamer what type of OD sounds good with a plexi?
murkat Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 depends on what type of distortion or gain you want to achieve.Xotic EP boosterEH Black box Russian Muff1982 Tube screamer.
tbonesullivan Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 Depends on the sound you want.MXR Distortion +Boss DS-1 or OD-3A treble booster might work nice. There are also plenty of clean boosts out there that can drive the input stage nicely.
carfish7 Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 Mos-FET stuff seems to feed the beasts well. My experience hasbeen with an old Ibanez Mostortion from the "10" series.
zenmindbeginner Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 If you can afford a plexi, you should be getting the finest overdrive there is...Strippers and Cocaine.if you want distortion, try Hookers and Crack.

FrankieIII Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 Carl Martin Plexitone extremely popular for this application as well is the Digitech Bad Monkey due to it's bass control which you completely lose with Tube Screamers. I've never owned the Carl Martin, but I do own the Bad Monkey and love it. And they are very cheap.
dewey finn Posted July 20, 2012 Author Posted July 20, 2012 If you can afford a plexi, you should be getting the finest overdrive there is...Strippers and Cocaine.if you want distortion, try Hookers and Crack. My wife has completely gutted the hookers and Crack fund as well as Strippers and coke. She's no fun sometimes. I was wondering what other flavors were out there other than the tried and true Plexi Tubescreamer combo.
dewey finn Posted July 20, 2012 Author Posted July 20, 2012 Klon. Trust me.Awesome! Where can I get one that will not require me selling one or more of my kids?
RobB Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 Other than a Tube Screamer what type of OD sounds good with a plexi? Are you trying to boost an already overdriven plexi, i.e., tying the inputs together and cranking it? Or, taking a loud, clean sound and adding OD to that? To boost an overdriven amp, I would suggest a treble booster. It boosts certain frequencies, adds a little gain AND volume, if you find tone with a blend/sweep control. I suggest the JHS Banana Boost. Mine sounds killer with both a Mojave Scorpion 50 and a Soldano HR50. Tube Screamers are a time-worn classic, but they do seem to take the low-end "oomph" out of lead sounds. With Marshalls, I always used to turn down the tone/drive controls on TS9s and crank the output. As far as a pedal for a loud, clean amp, I really can't speak to that. There are so many good ones out there. Never used a Klon, but there are a few builders that make reportedly accurate clones for a lot less money. BTW, what kind of Plexi are you using? Pics, futhamukka!
dewey finn Posted July 20, 2012 Author Posted July 20, 2012 I recently sold my Fargen Mighty Plex to fund some renovations on the house. My wife thought it would be nice to let me order a new amp to replace it. I found Mark Moser of Frugal Amps out of Vermont and after some discussion and sound clips illustrating what I was looking for, he suggested a Marshall 1987 circuit. I am very pleased wit the amp. The knob on the far left is a VVR as the amp is a non master volume. Behold and gaze with awe:
dewey finn Posted July 20, 2012 Author Posted July 20, 2012 TimmyNo, it's Dewey. Even says so in my Avatar.
veatch Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 Timmy No, it's Dewey. Even says so in my Avatar. TIM-MAY!!! +1 Great pedal. Never tried a Klon. Way out of my league (and frankly never heard of them before today... $1200 on feeBay???)
zenmindbeginner Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 Instead of tracking down a Centaur in the wild. Have the original boutique overdrive...... The Lovetone Brown SourceLose yer mindz in this (42 best overdrive/distortion/fuzz pedals of all time)

I am very pleased wit the amp. The knob on the far left is a VVR as the amp is a non master volume. Whoah! In the vernacular of my SoCal youth, "that is f***ing RAD!" That's a 45w head, right? I went to the Frugal site to see what "VVR" was, to discover it's a voltage control, not unlike a built-in Variac. Many builders are installing these controls (or variations) in their amps. London's Power Scaling is a good one and my Mojave Scorpion has an especially effective one, though "3 attenuated watts" is still plenty loud! With the Frugal head, you're probably getting that nice, cranked plexi overdrive, yes? Again, I would suggest trying out treble boosters to get a lead bump. I found clean boosts/ODs boost the front end of the amp, resulting in more distortion but the resulting compression *usually* doesn't amount to much of a volume boost. I'm looking forward to trying FrankieIII's HBE Germania through my rig... Looks like Frugal's got a good thing going. The USA equivalent to Ceriatone, maybe?
dewey finn Posted July 21, 2012 Author Posted July 21, 2012 Rob, It's a 50 watt 1987 Plexi Clone. It really sounds great and gets that awesome cranked Plexi tone all the way down to 1 watt. At a little more than what Marshall is charging for it's one watt amps, I have a gig worthy amp that is all hand wired. Just a smoking good amp for less than a G. I heard a sound sample of JHS's version of the Klon and liked it alot. A little over what I can spend right now but it's on the short list.

Disturber Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 I use the Fulltone Catalyst for this. Very usefull pedal for either fuzz or boost. Does a more than okay treble boost too. This pedal likes the amp running very hot already, then it shows it's best.
Bennyboy-UK Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 How about something like an old Marshall Blues Breaker pedal, they cost f'all and are pretty civilised to add a bit of extra front end. My mate Paddy uses one on his 72ish AC30 to get some signal push at lower than public health order volume levels. Works well to be honest, and the set up give a rather tasty bit of drive without huge amounts of colour to the sound.Maybe about 50 quid to buy probably less, its not a poncey boutique peirce of kit, but then I spose a plexi isn't either, at least not at original conception...Effective and no frills, that might be just the ticket.
dewey finn Posted August 17, 2012 Author Posted August 17, 2012 Recently acquired a Tone Monk Phoenix. Klon type of OD. Really liking it so far. VVR shorted out on my amp. Mark at Frugal took it back and after some discussion it now sports a LarMar PPVI master. Gobs of power amp distortion at bedroom levels. Still dialing the overall EQ but wow what a great amp. Think I need a little delay now .....
